Yamaha FZ16

Bike tested: Yamaha FZ16

Price OTR Mumbai: 75,000/-

MotorBeam rating:

The Yamaha FZ16 has been a highly awaited bike and is a very important bike for Yamaha. We thought reviewing the FZ16 is as important as reviewing a new Maruti car, so we did not delay in getting our hands on the Yamaha FZ16.

To start off this bike has striking presence. The looks of this bike will be a major reason for its success. We all know that the Pulsar 150 isint as great a bike as its sales figure suggests, its engine is not as refined either compared to the Unicorn but it does sell and how! One of the main reasons for the Pulsar 150 to sell so well is, it looks the part and the FZ16 makes the Pulsar look like a bike from last generation. After looking at the FZ16, i can confidently say that the bike is Definitely Male.

Just like the Yamaha R15, the FZ16 has been wind tunnel tested for better aerodynamics. The engine is air cooled and uses a carburetor. A FI version would have made this bike really more desirable but then Yamaha had to price it sanely too. However the bike does ride pretty well.

There is good amount of low end grunt, something which is missing in the R15. Though power of 14PS doesn’t speak much, its the torque which is worth talking about. 13.6NM @ 6000 RPM means this bike pulls very well from any RPM. There is very good throttle response and the bike will nudge 120kmph which is the norm in the 150cc segment. Yamaha claim an unrealistic mileage of 50kmpl. Expect 40kmpl under normal riding conditions.

The fat front forks, mono cross suspension and the fat tires ensures that the FZ16 rides very well. You hardly feel a bump and is thus suited for our roads, which are well poorly made. Although the bike looks all muscles, it handles pretty well. Change of direction is quick and the wide handle bars makes the riding position almost spot on. Braking is good and gear shifts are smooth but not as good as the R15, which is in another league.

We really didn’t like the instrumentation on the FZ16. The tacho needle is small and makes it difficult to read. Otherwise too the instrument cluster is a wee bit small for our liking and for a bike which looks so big and butch, i really don’t know why Yamaha compromised on better instrumentation. The bike also has no kick start (ala Pulsar 220), similar fuel tank capacity as the R15 (12 liters) and weighs just 127 kgs (dry)

To sum up the FZ16 is a fantastic machine, it is worth the money and is certainly our pick in the 150cc segment. However Yamaha could have made it better, all those fat tires and forks need a bigger engine, perhaps a FZ20 should be launched by Yamaha to quench the performance hunger in us.

Whats Kool

  • Looks amazing
  • Rides very well
  • Engine has good grunt
  • Attention to detail
  • Fat tires
  • Good pricing

Whats UnKool

  • Unimpressive instrument cluster
  • Pillion seat too small for humans

Nice review guys, but i felt you guys could have taken it outside and then taken pictures…
    kudos

  2. fas Says:

Thanks alot Harish. The bike is newly launched and hence there were too many people waiting to get a ride on it.

  3. Raul Says:

Nice review. I really like the FZ16. However can anyone tell me which one would be a better choice? A more powerful Pulsar 200 or the FZ16. The Pulsar has some features which the FZ16 lacks. But then the FZ16 has some features the Pulsar 200 lacks. Both are similarly priced.

  4. ringo Says:

    Nice but some questions.

    - Have you ridden the bike ?
-The company web site says torque is 14 nm.
    - How do you know about the mileage. Because as to what I know Yamaha claims normal riding mileage. Yamaha claimed 38-42 knpl for R15 and as per reports on magazines and internet R15 is giving about 40 so when yamaha claims about 50 may be it is it might give about 50.

But any way your analysis is very good.

    Regards,
    Ringo

  5. fas Says:

Thanks for your comment. Yes i have ridden the bike. Torque is 13.6NM as per the brochure. Maybe the company has rounded it off. When i asked the dealer the mileage he hesitated and said, it will give what all 150cc bikes do and then he said 50, which does not seem likely. However if it gives 50kmpl it will be icing on the cake, because this bike is that good that you wont care about the mileage.

  6. Nomad Says:

Which dealer did you go to? Are they offering test ride’s? Also did you inquire about booking details? I want to book a Black one soon!
    Thanks.

  7. fas Says:

Normad where are you located? I went to a dealer in Mumbai, test rides have not started every where yet. Booking has started. You have to pay Rs. 10000 booking amount and deliveries will start in October.

  8. gaurav Says:

    Hi there,

Nice review guys..But I still have doubts regarding the bike’s comfort level for tall riders..the thing looks well built and snug..but it looks smaller than even apache 160..I feel it may not be that comfortable for tall guys (like me!)..any ideas on it?

  9. fas Says:

The bike is much more comfortable to ride for tall riders compared to the R15 but still its not as good as the Karizma.

  10. ratna Says:

    Dear,

Can I know what would be the mileage, am planning to buy a new bike. I dont have much money, but I got flatened by FZ 16 specs. I have two bikes in my mind one is honda stunner which gives mileage of 60 in city and other is FZ16 in yamaha. Please send me the answe quickly.

    thanks in advance.

  11. fas Says:

Dear Ratna the mileage will hover around 40-45 kmpl in normal riding conditions. Certainly the CBF Stunner will be more economical but then it has lesser power and is more of a economy bike then a fun to ride bike like the FZ16.

  12. MGame Zone Says:

So beautiful Bike. I like it.

  13. Mohit Says:

Hi, i liked what was written but have few queries of my own… with the specs claiming the performance to be on a higher side and with the widest tyres compared to any production bike in India, i am rather skeptical that it would even give a mileage of 40!! Moreover, the view of the rear seat makes me feel that it would be on the uncomfortable side for a BIG BOTTOMED pillion,,
Lastly, can you clarify the overall length of the bike when compared to pulsar,, coz i believe everyone would like to have a comfortable ride rather than sticking to the pillion…
I am eagerly awaiting a road-test for myself to decide if its worth the buy. its not yet given for a test ride in hyderabad… sad,,,,,

  14. fas Says:

Mohit, the rear seat is really very uncomfortable to sit on. Its very small and i doubt the pillion will be comfortable sitting on a seat that small. Mileage of 40 is attainable under sane riding conditions. The Pulsar 150 has a length of 2055mm which is longer compared to 1975mm length of the FZ16.

  15. Mohit Says:

So do you think I should opt for Pulsar 200/180 in comparison with FZ16’s overall performance and value??? This would help me decide my buy…
    Thanks for the info..

  16. fas Says:

Mohit the 200 is a very good bike. However its nowhere close to the FZ16 in terms of engine refinement and built quality. The 200 is worth the extra cost over the 180 since the 200 uses the 220’s chassis, whereas the 180 uses the 150’s. I would advice you to go for the FZ16 but if you find the rear seat a issue then you can wait for the Apache Menace 180 (details on the Menace coming soon) but don’t go for the 200 as a upgraded version seems to be on the cards. Read about it here http://www.motorbeam.com/2008/08/25/upgraded-pulsar-200/

  17. Romi Says:

Hi! I would like to know is when is FZ16 being officially launched??? Is the launch date same all over india or if no when is it being launched in Kerala????

  18. Mohit Says:

Thanks for the suggestions. Its a long dream for me to own my own bike all these days and i guess now i just need a test drive to zero in on whats that gonna be, mostly it should be FZ 16 as i love a quality, performance and durable bike which will set me off any tensions regarding maintanace or it would be 180cc coz my elder bro has it and its giving a hassle free performance with good mileage as well… cheers

  19. fas Says:

Romi the FZ16 has been launched and you can get yours by booking it right away. Yamaha has launched it all over India. Just check with your local dealer.

Mohit both the bikes are very good and i am sure will live up to what your looking for, if you can wait then the Apache Menace will be another option.

  20. inao Says:

i have seen it and read many reviews. i really like this bike will buy it someday near. it is the best in its 150ccc… event pulsar 200 is nothing compare to it.
buy one and experience yourself dude

  21. fas Says:

Yes the FZ16 is a very good bike but Bajaj are getting the upgraded Pulsar and it might have FI.

  22. Piyush Says:

it’s a very very good bike..i like this bike i have booked it on 20th september.and the delievry will be on 19thoct.this bike is most handsome of all i had ever seen..go yamaha go.please yamaha develop more higher segments..

  23. Mohit Says:

    -> fas,
Are you sure BAJAJ are up for an FI version of the PULSAR.. If yes, what segment would that be on??? Are they planning for a new segment all together???

  24. Mohit Says:

I am waiting for a test drive and noone knows when they might give it for test drives to the public…I am waiting YAMAHA….

  25. fas Says:

Mohit - Bajaj are getting the FI version of the 200cc Pulsar. They are not planning for a new segment but the same segment. Speak to your Yamaha dealer and tell him you need to decide on the bike fast.

  26. Mohit Says:

Hey, i got my first look at the monster today.. Gosh,, i should say that it has got looks that will steal your imagination and the paint quality on the plastics and other visible areas are top notch…
    Some drawbacks that i noticed was;

Firstly, the handle bar and speedometer cluster is a bit odd( maybe coz i am used to seeing other bikes..). i feel the ergonomics used there was a bit raw and hasnt got the neat look but again i guess thats what this bike is all about… the RUGED LOOK…

Secondly, there is no provision as of now for a CRASH GUARD which is something taht one cant over look.. i guess YAMAH will come up with something for it.

Thirdly, the position for placing the number plate is not yet decided as the area under the head lights are too low which would scratch the mud guard on brakling and aas per yamaha’s advice goes, it will be placed between the head light and speedometer console which ruins the look of the bike…

rest all things are stunning and top of the class…

*NON BRAKABLE INDICATORS( totally flexible made for parking damage)
*Lights glow on battery without the engine being turned on
*Speedometer console is great to see as its all digitised
*The suspension seems very smooth and comfortable.
Overall thebike is a class apart.. and people are gooing crazy as the bookings in that showrom i visited was recently opened and its already crossed 150..

I hope i made things a lot more easier to all…

  27. fas Says:

Hey Mohit, very good opinion about the FZ16. I don’t like instrumentation. Its does not look all that impressive compared to the Pulsars. Are you buying the FZ16?

  28. Mohit Says:

Thanks …and like i said, i will have a test drive once YAMAHA lets it off for a test drive. My buy will be decided then. Till then its a painful wating game… Till then i want all the bikers to go an check out this monster and give us all better suggestions.
    Cheers

  29. fas Says:

Is int it a good thing that you are waiting since the TVS Apache Menace will be out by then. Read http://www.motorbeam.com/2008/10/08/tvs-apache-menace-details/

  30. gaurav Says:

I really fail to understand why the design/product development engineers have not given kick start to FZ-16.Being a street bike it should have a kick start to make it more reliable.
I m not against Self starter…but remember the kick that bought life to RX100/RX135..it is fun to kick start..also kick start eliminates the dependence on battery for the prime reason why somebody wants a bike..>>TO RIDE IT OF COURSE.

  31. fas Says:

Kick start is being eliminated by many bike companies. First it was Bajaj with the Pulsar 220 Fi and now its Yamaha. Low maintenance batteries seem to last better and hence kick start is avoidable.

  32. Kaustubh Says:

    Hi All,

This bike is stunner.. I have booked it yesterday….I have not seen such bike in its segment…..about average..if you are buying such a HOT chick why you are thinking about that….dont show the indian mentality…..its a one of its kind….

and please atleast do not compare Pulsar with FZ16…:-)))

  33. Kaustubh Says:

I will update this blog once i get FZ16 (might be within few weeks)…but i will suggest all the people who are planning to buy new bike, go for this one or RTR than pulsar…..

These are the only 2 best bikes in the 150 segment….

  34. fas Says:

The Pulsar really looks tamed infront of the FZ16. Do share your review with us on the FZ16 ownership. Yamaha could have very well used the tagline definitely male with the FZ16 but then Bajaj already uses it.

  35. Sameer Malik Says:

Yamaha FZ16 definitely out of the league bike in design and I’m sure on riding it for the first time, it’ll going to leave us all speechless in performance as it has been refined to give 5 star rating till the speed of 80Km/h, aby the time it exceeds this limit it’ll start losing its glory, as we all know, for that range Yamaha has introduced R15. Now it’s upto us what we want,’Almost near Perfection maneuverability(FZ16) or High Speed with SuperSport Bike Feeling(R15)’.

  36. gaurav Says:

I just saw the bike at one dealer. The bike is well built with good finish. The engine sound is heavy (BASS type-whereas I like TREBLE Type..but OK )
They should have given analog instrument console..the digital looks out of place. Also the gear link looks weak.

  37. Purshotham Says:

Pls suggest me which bike is good for handling (Pulsar, RTR160, Stunner, FZ16)

  38. john Says:

actually review got some problem me and my yamaha professional rider go upto135-140 top speed.

  39. fas Says:

Can you please tell us how you manage to go 135-140kmph on a 14bhp bike?

  40. fas Says:

Purshotham - If you want a good bike for handling then get the R15 or the Apache FI.

  41. Mohit Says:

well well…here we are… guys, i have successfully test driven the FZ 16 which was given for test drive today in Hyderabad…. to be frank i was very excited as my plan was to book it as soon as i was done with the test drive but there is always twist in a story… so here is what i found in the test drive i did..

Although the ride was short and brisk but i managed to take the bike to its max rev where i thought i would come to know it actual muscle and to speak honestly i was DISAPPOINTED.

What made me take my mind off this bike was the value for the money i plan to invest on something i wanted to be proud of.. The bike, as told in lot of reviews which i read everywhere stated that it had the best torque(power delivery) in every gear but i found it to be very normal.
(I guess i had over expectations on it..)

But what i would like to highlight is the other aspects of the bike,,,
Firstly, it has the best gear shift i have experienced in any bike..(way ahead of pulsar, unicorn and HHs… )

Secondly, the bike has a very good and refined engine, which is a great thing in today’s market as people don’t really know what it means to have a good performance.

Thirdly, the balance of the bike is incredible. Even when i took a very sharp U turn, i was very confident in its stickiness on the road ( its all in those meaty tires)…

The front brakes are spot on and reassuring coz the back brakes where not up to the mark (as what i felt..)

As a whole, i would say its a great bike with all the pros and cons that it has,, you cant take away the YAMAHA engineering that is done on this baby… I would say, if its for a college going student, its a great bike, but not for a bike enthusiast… YAMAHA needs a bit more research to do on its marketing strategies…

My final verdict is that, you can go for it blindfolded if you need a good performing bike with less power. Cheers

  42. fas Says:

Excellent review there Mohit. Yes it does not feel as good and powerful on higher revvs like the R15 does. Yamaha’s FZ16 is made more for the city then the highway.

So which bike have you decided to buy?

  43. Ravi Says:

    Hi,

Just had one query. I have seen both the R15 and FZ 16, but cannot make up my mind as to which one to buy. I’m about 5′11 and have to commute about 60-70 kms everyday, including both city and highway. Can you suggest me which one should i go for? thanks…

  44. fas Says:

Ravi - Since your tall i wouldn’t suggest you the R15 as you have to lean quite alot while riding the R15 ans since your riding 60-70 kms a day, comfort is very important. I would suggest the FZ16 and if you want to try out other bikes, check out the Karizma as well.

  45. Mohit Says:

    @ fas,

Well, out of my desperation for performance and taking all odds into consideration, i would go for 180cc pulsar.. sorry guys, YAMAHA left me with no ther choice… I wish i could have bought that beauty if it had al that i need.. a little more aggression…

Thanks fas for your replies… you were patient with me…

  46. fas Says:

Mohit - Your most welcome. I would still suggest you to check out the Apache and the Pulsar 200. The Pulsar 200 is very good bike and is priced pretty good too.

  47. Ravi Says:

    Fas,

Thanks for the earlier advice… but u see i already had a pulsar 180, which gave me good performance… considering FZ 16 that belts out about 14 bhp (compared to 180’s 15), i don’t want to compromise on speed and performance…to put it in simpler words, a ’slow’ bike…i like to rev the throttle hard and i feel FZ16 would feel just like the 180….nothing special…please advice…

  48. fas Says:

Ravi - Why don’t you check out the Pulsar 200 and 220’s. They have better performance then the 180. But if performance is what your looking for then the R15 and 220 is what you should consider.

  49. Ravi Says:

Thanks for the advise fas… i think i will stick to the R15 then, as pulsar has become too common…
    Thanks again…

  50. fas Says:

Ravi your most welcome. Make sure to check out the riding position before booking the R15.

  51. web design Says:

The FZ16 looks awesome, with more power it can be the best performance bike.

  52. AMAN MEHRA Says:

Hi,i hade ride fz16 its good but the only thing which is nt good is its lenth. As yamaha is launching new new bikes they should use there brain also, if ur launching a bike in 150ccf seg than the prices should be accordingly.Yamaha is a big comp should no that is the time to launch 2,3cylinder bikes. fx16 is a butifulbike but it is too small in leanth as well as in hight….

  53. Max Says:

    great reviews… nice pictures!!

  54. manav Says:

    hey there every one….
i was planning to buy a bike now but im really confused bet the fz16 and the 200… the thing is since fz 16 is a new bike i dont know how will it be like after a yr or so…atleast with pulsars we know…
secondly i have a broad built (6 ft) so will these bikes suit me???
also my dad is saying better to go in for a thunder bird…
    pls advice…

  55. fas Says:

Manav - FZ16 will be as reliable as any other bike after an year as its a Yamaha. Both these bikes are good enough for you, but the Pulsar 200 is the better bike as their is no replacement for displacement. Thunderbird is in a different league, its a Enfield, its not what you buy from your head but your heart.

  56. Ravi Says:

    Dear Fas,

Sorry to bother you again…but looks like my turmoil is going to lasta little longer…
I was going thru diffrent websites, when I came to know that bajaj is going to launch the Kawasaki Ninja 250 for about 1.5 k!!! Now im dead confused… Should i still stick to buy an R15 or wait for the Ninja?? Please help…
    Regards,
    Ravi

  57. fas Says:

Hey Ravi this is no bother, we are here to discuss and i would always love to hear from you. The Ninja is surely a better bike, infact some say its the best 250cc bike in the world. But pricing seems to be speculative. On Kawasaki’s site the price is mentioned as 4000 USD and at current conversion rates that equates to Rs. 2 lacs. So if Bajaj get it for 1.5 lacs then it surely is worth the money. I suggest wait if possible otherwise the R15 is good enough but surely the Ninja will be much much better.

  58. Ravi Says:

    Fas,

Seeing the 4000$ price tag and conversion, there would also be a tax as bajaj plans to bring it in a CKD version from Thailand. But even if the govt. levies 40% tax, it well may swell over to 3 lacs, right?
But then, the entire logic of having an affordable superbike would be defeated…

  59. fas Says:

Your totally right Ravi and that’s the reason Bajaj has been localising a few parts to get the price down. They intent to price it around Rs. 2 lacs which is still quite a good price for this bike. Pricing of Rs. 1.5 lacs is nothing but a rumour and we all wish that this rumour is true. Who wouldn’t like a affordable superbike?

  60. Ravi Says:

Ur right fas, though i think my budget would overstretch if the bike, as u say, would come at around 2 lacs…guess have to stick to the R15 only…thanks a ton!!!

  61. fas Says:

Your most welcome. Did you read the Yamaha R15 review here http://www.motorbeam.com/yamaha-r15-test-ride-review/

  62. chintan Says:

FZ16 new Road Test posted on
    http://zigwheels.com/cars_in_india/Yamaha+FZ16+Road-Test:+Urban+Assault–Yamaha11_20081028–/INDT/TwoWheelers/Yamaha11_20081028–1–7

  63. chintan Says:

zigwheels has figured out overall milage as 60.32kmpl(25%highway+75%city)…..is it true? i doubt…wht do u say?

  64. fas Says:

To be frank Chintan, most magazines give really unrealistic mileage figures. All these mileage figures are got by riding very cautiously which is not possible in day to day riding. You must have seen a few road tests claiming mileage of cars like Fiesta and Verna to be over 30kmpl which is a load of BS :p

  65. chintan Says:

though i dont care abt milage..but i am worrying about seat hight..is it comfortable for 6′ guy?

  66. fas Says:

Yes, the bike is comfortable for a 6 footer. But if you are tall i will suggest you the Karizma.

  67. manav Says:

    @ fas
dude i agree that theres no replacement for displacement…
but tell me one thing honestly if u were in my place which bike will u go in for????
    the fz or the 200???

  68. fas Says:

Manav i would go for the 200, its much more value for money.

  69. Saroj Says:

    HI guys,

I am around 5′6″ tall and was wondering to buy fz 16. Do you think it will be okay for me ???? I test rided r15 and found that it was bit difficult to handle with my height.

  70. fas Says:

Saroj - I don’t think riding the FZ16 will be difficult. Why don’t you take a test ride. Once you get used to riding the bike you won’t feel its difficult to ride :)

  71. gaurav927 Says:

See the complete review of FZ16 here (posted on friday)

    http://zigwheels.com/b2cam/newsDetails.action?path=/INDT/TwoWheelers/Yamaha11_20081028&name=Yamaha11_20081028&page=1&pagecount=7

Chech out the mileage guys (they say its 60 kmpl!)

  72. Mindguage Says:

Hi , i have checked with the brand new Yamaha FZ16, the bike looks are ultimate and with black color mind blowing.. and had a test ride on my friends bike . But intersting about the bike is it does nt not have a kick start, which has no feel to ride . Power well go , the body is made up of double coat of fibre .. and economy is 35km per litre. To get the body parts of the bike. spoke to the dealers they suggested incase of crash of the bike the parts to get would minimum take a week.. I wanted to buy the bike .. but now its let me down with the overall of the bike .. The ultimate bike would be with power , economy and also offcourse the looks .. Hope some good company comes up with it..

  73. fas Says:

Bajaj is planning to get the 250 Ninja which will be a bike with power, economy and look :)

  74. Mindguage Says:

Probably Kawasaki Ninja 250 (again joint venture by bajaj)had to lauch the bike on Oct or Nov this year.. And the bike is somewhere up to 1.5 to 2 Lak..

  75. fas Says:

I doubt the Ninja will be anything less then 2 lacs. It costs that much in the US itself.

  76. ashley Says:

hi,i was planing 2 buy a new bike in december…but m thinkin which 2buy. i liked fz16… but i heard dat its very difficult 2get their parts in da market is it true…n i heard also dat their 4stroke bikes r not coming out good….so plzzzzzz tell me is it true or no….otherwise im planing 2 buy baja 200cc.plzzz telll me..

  77. fas Says:

Ashley i haven’t heard such things and i am sure Yamaha will take care of sourcing the parts. I think buying the FZ16 is not a issue and you should get a test ride of the FZ16.

  78. zing Says:

hey guys, i booked for this bike [fz16] on the 18th of october. and i paid the dealer 50000 rupees cause they said its the minimum amt… but the bike’s not yet been delivered to me, nor did they inform me about the exact delivery… is it normal??? cuz im waitin too long for this one..
by the way, im in imphal and we’ve only one dealer here… i really want to get the bike soon, so, any suggestions?????
    and plllleaseeeeeeeeeeeeeeee help…!!!!!!

You paid too much for booking. The bike should have been delivered to you, just speak to the dealer and tell him you want the bike asap.

  84. Teja Says:

Hii…I’m waiting for the new CBZ Xtreme which is coming with an upgraded version. Can u exactly tell me when would Hero Honda will launch new CBZ Xtreme. Please get me the actual details of the bike. I referred some of the sites where its bhp is around 18 & top speed is 135. Is it true……?. Comparing both CBZ as well as FZ-16 which is more preferable….? [:)]

  85. fas Says:

Teja Hero Honda just launched a upgraded version of the CBZ Xtreme with red alloys. There is no confirmation of a CBZ Xtreme with 18bhp and 135kmph top speed. I would suggest you to test ride the FZ16 and Pulsar 200. Hero Honda’s next performance bike will be the Karizma FI.

  86. Teja Says:

If I want to go for Pulsar 200 it would be better to wait for the 200 Fi than the present one. Moreover can you tell me when CBZ xtreme would be launched. Actually I was waiting for CBZ xtreme then suddenly there is a launch of FZ16.
