The US based largest auto manufacturer of the world, General Motors has seen a significantly good innings in the recent times under the Chevrolet brand in the Indian auto sector. When General Motors globally was facing tough times and rapidly declining sales, it was having a relatively good innings in the Indian market. However, Chevrolet has never got a good hold of the premium hatchback segment till date in the Indian market. Chevrolet had launched the Aveo U-VA earlier but the product wasn’t well received by the consumers and it was no match for its strong contenders like the Maruti Suzuki Swift, Volkswagen Polo and others.

Now, the company was plans to re-enter into the same segment with a brand new product. Its called the Chevrolet Sail hatchback. The Chevrolet Sail has been caught testing few times by spy shot photographers on Indian roads confirming its possible launch in the Indian market soon. The Chinese partner of General Motors, SAIC has also played a role in the development of the Chevrolet Sail so we expect many of its components to be of the Chinese make. This is a strategy adopted by the company that will help to keep product development and components costs low thus making it an aggressive proposition price wise. However, the down side to it would be the product reliability and Chevrolet should really take this into consideration to make it a successful product for the Indian market.

Chevrolet Sail Interior

The Sail Hatchback is powered by a 1.2 litre gasoline engine that produces 82 BHP of power at 6200 RPM and a peak torque of 108Nm at 4400 RPM. This engine is mated to a 5 speed manual gearbox sending power to the front wheels. The vehicle also gets a diesel powertrain will be similar to the Fiat Multi-jet engine and Chevrolet might plonk in the diesel engine currently used in its Beat. The car also gets features like dual airbags, rear parking sensors, fog lamps, climate control, central locking, EBD and ABS. It rides on 155/65 R15 wheels and has its stopping power provided by disc brakes at the front and drum at the rear. The Sail Hatchback is expected to cost around Rs. 5.5 lakhs to Rs. 6 lakhs with the diesel variant going upto Rs. 7 lakhs.( ex-showroom, Mumbai).

Can if they market it aggressively .

  • Sushrut

Volvo too is now a Chinese Auto company owned, but no one is questioning the quality. GM knows what works here and will be careful. Interiors are too spartan though.

    • Faisal

Sushrut, Volvo cars are still designed and manufactured in Sweden.

  • Iam Indian

This car will be delight to the customer…. placed with the best price it will shake the Indian market. The price will be of the best than expected…. With advanced 1.3 diesel engine, higher than expected mileage it will be a game changer for GM for sure

  • Sugu

This doesn’t look like a challenge for swift.

    • Faisal

Sugu, more like a challenge to the Indica.

    • Sugu

      Ha ha .. true..

  • hari

This car looks good can be succcessfull if chevy price it aggressively, but cannot be compared with Swift and cannot Challenge The Swift, because Swift has its own brand, it has Maruti’s tag in it….

    • Faisal

Hari, rightly said. Even with aggressive price, you can expect terrible gearbox and mediocre handling.

    • sidd

u r right swift even looks more maturer and has a better design but this thing looks outdated and the interiors are the most pathetic i have ever seen till date in this segment

  • Samarth

Too bland a car to appeal to popular tastes. will meet the same fate as its previous version.

    • Faisal

Samarth, the Aveo U-VA was not a bad car, it lacked a diesel version.

  • chandu

this looks like a conventional design and there is no special in that which can beat the looks of a swift.
positioning it as a premium hatch will not help GM to sell in large nos. as swift is doing.

instead of this they can get Cruze hatchback which is much sportier and can be rightly positioned as a premium hatchback.

  • Ananthakrishnan

No chance. This car isn’t aggressive, and will not have diesel engines initially.

    • Faisal

Ananthakrishnan, after the launch of Beat diesel, GM has understood how important a diesel engine is in a hatchback.

  • noky chanthavong

but it drinks too much gasoline!! 9Km/1L

    • Faisal

Noky, those figures are from whom?
