The country’s largest auto manufacturer in terms of volumes, Maruti Suzuki India Limited has always targeted and concentrated on the volume segment in the Indian automotive market. the volume segment includes sub-compact cars to compact hatchbacks and compact sedans. With more and more global players entering into the same segments in the Indian automotive industry, Maruti Suzuki is definitely facing a lot of heat to keep up the sales volumes and operating profits.

In recent times, the company has thought of making a move to different segments, especially those in which it currently doesn’t have any presence still to keep up the sales volumes and provide some serious competition to the existing players in those segments. The latest example is the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga which is the company’s first model in the MUV segment, a segment which has been ruled by the Toyota Innova since a decade.

The company also might be venturing into the compact SUV segment, with the company showcasing a concept called the XA Alpha at the 2012 Delhi Auto Expo held in January. In a latest revelation by Hormazd Sorabjee of Autocar India on Twitter, Maruti Suzuki is working on the development of a third sedan car which might be targeted to fill the current void between the Dzire and the SX4. Further details on the product are however not available. It will be really interesting to see how Maruti Suzuki shapes up this model since the void between the Dzire and the SX4 is not very big.
