Mahindra is in the planning and preparation phase for the launch of the 5-seater SUV from the SSangyong line-up, the Korando. Mahindra said that they are studying the Indian market for the capability of the Korando to enter the Indian market and proper positioning and pricing of the vehicle. Mahindra had showcased two SUV’s from its Korean subsidiary, Ssangyong, the Rexton and Korando, in January 2012 at the Indian Auto Expo. The 7-seater luxury SUV, Rexton has already been launched in India and is doing decent sales.

The Korando is a 5-seater SUV that will compete with the Chevrolet Captiva, Skoda Yeti and the Renault Koleos. It is powered by a 2.0-litre diesel engine from Mercedes-Benz that produces 175 BHP and 360 Nm of torque. It has a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed automatic on option as well as a front-wheel drive or a permanent 4-wheel drive system. The Korando is loaded with features like cruise control, climate control, steering controls and touch screen navigation system.

Mahindra has not given a specific time frame for the launch of the Korando but said that in due course of time, when they decide the exact positioning of the SUV, they will introduce it on our shores. The Indian UV manufacturer said that in their initial study they found the Rexton has a better chance of early acceptance in India, which it did prove with 1500 bookings of the same. The Korando will be launched with an expected price of Rs. 15 to 20 lakhs. It will be manufactured at the Chakan plant near Pune alongside the Rexton.
