2014 Honda Urban SUV

Almost all car manufacturers are joining the compact SUV race. While Toyota is still waiting to enter this high growth segment, Honda is all set to bring out its compact SUV next year. The Japanese car maker has already showcased the concept version of its upcoming compact SUV, which it has chosen to call as the Honda Urban. This compact SUV from Honda is underpinned by the next generation Jazz’ platform, which is due to go on sale next year in many countries, including India.

The production version of the Honda Urban is set to be unveiled anytime soon as the vehicle will go on sale in Japan later this year. However you don’t have to wait any longer as we have rendered the Honda Urban SUV (above). The production model will not have those LED lights, nor will the chrome grille extend to the headlights. The wheels will be smaller with high profile tyres to tackle bad and off-road conditions. However the Honda Urban SUV will not be a true SUV as it won’t be offered with 4-wheel drive initially.

The Honda Urban SUV is not really small like the Volkswagen Taigun or the Ford EcoSport. The vehicle has a length of 4.3-metres which makes it as big as the Renault Duster (4.315-metres). Powering the Honda Urban SUV will be a 1.5-litre i-VTEC petrol engine and 1.5-litre i-DTEC diesel engine, both of which produce good amount of power, while returning excellent mileage. The Urban SUV will not get excise duty benefits and is thus expected to be priced around Rs. 10 lakhs in India. Honda will certainly showcase the Urban SUV at the 2014 Auto Expo which takes place in February next year. Meanwhile checkout the pictures of the Honda Urban SUV Concept below.

Excellent concept. Stylish exterior and suitably modern interior – I’m sold. Honda should capitalize on this concept by going all out to capture a whole new and wider audience for its products. They should ensure quality(perceived) materials are used on the interior to back up Honda’s legendary bomb-proof build quality, in order to win European buyers in particular. More importantly however, Honda should provide a variety of power-train and transmission set ups to appeal to a wide audience. 1500cc displacement petrol and diesel units on their own mated to CVT transmissions will NOT make the grade!! By all means offer these for the ‘eco minded’, but please offer more powerful versions as well (1.8 itec, 1.6 idtec, 1.5 IMA hybrid, alongside a 1.6 turbo petrol and the lovely high-reving 2.0 found in the type R civic would complete a formidable line up!). Honda needs to use this opportunity to re-capture and surpass the status they once held.

Oh, I forgot to mention this. In the quest for sporty handling dynamics, please don’t forget ride quality. The current Euro-spec 2013 Civic 1.8 ivtec is a sound benchmark.
