Mercedes-Benz Reveals 9-Speed Transmission On E-Class

2013 Mercedes E-Class Price

Mercedes-Benz will be introducing the all new 9-speed automatic transmission in the new E-Class, which will go on sale in the European market this September. The new transmission won’t be available in the UK market until next year. For the time being, the E-Class will get introduced to the new transmission and eventually the carmaker will update the rest of the lineup intended to feature the new 9G-TRONIC transmission, which replaces the old 7G-TRONIC transmission.

Replacing the old 7-speed 7G-TRONIC, the new transmission offers improved fuel efficiency and CO2 emissions. The high-tech gearbox will get mated to the E350 BlueTEC first. The CO2 emissions of the specific model have dropped from 157 g/km to 138 g/km. The fuel economy has improved from 20 km/l to 22 km/l. The 9G-TRONIC has also increased the refinement level to a great extent. The German automaker claims that the engine is spinning at just 1350 RPM while driving at 120 km/hr in top gear.

Compared to the outgoing transmission, the 9G-TRONIC is lighter but the size of the transmission hasn’t changed and the acceleration also remains unchanged. The new gearbox can handle up to 1000 Nm of torque unlike 7G-TRONIC and it will be able to be fit in all of the AMG spec Mercedes models. At present, the S65 and CL65 AMG are mated to a 5-speed automatic rather than the 7G-TRONIC to handle the massive torque on offer. The addition of 9G-TRONIC gearbox won’t affect the price of the vehicles. We expect Mercedes to introduce the new transmission in India next year.

I was hoping to see gearboxes go a different way. Actually, I was hoping to see the gearbox eliminated rather than to see the # of gears increased in an already cumbersome and thirsty gear reduction system. A system that was primarily introduced to overcome the IC engines shortcoming of differential power and torque delivery character.

Its been two generations of hybrid engines now. Why isn’t that paving the way for a simpler iteration of the hybrid engine where the electric motor is pressed for startups alone leaving the IC engine to do duty after speeds have built up. Electric motors have a parallel power and torque delivery character and will therefore not need a gearbox or its transmission losses.

This is more-or-less what all parallel hybrids already do but I was hoping to see a simpler iteration of the hybrid engine which would be more of a gearbox replacement rather than an-all out hybrid plant.

GB, I think having gears gives you better control since all these cars have manual override function. Although 9 gears is a lot.
