Audi A3 India

Audi will launch the A3 sedan in India in 2014, a vehicle which can cement the German automaker’s position at the top of the luxury pyramid. Yesterday Audi launched the Q3 Sport, which is a temporary measure to fend off arch rivals from grabbing the pie in the entry level luxury segment. The company has started testing the Audi A3 in the Indian market, a car which will be showcased at the 2014 Auto Expo and will rival Mercedes-Benz’ upcoming CLA sedan, which too debuts around the same time.

MotorBeam reader Swarnim Deshpande snapped the car in Prabhadevi, Mumbai recently. The Audi A3 might not come very loaded and thus daytime running LED lights, LED tail lights, sunroof and automatic gearbox might be reserved for the top-spec variants only. An Audi without those daytime running lights seems difficult to imagine but the Q3 S Edition is proof that Audi will not hesitate to skimp on equipment to reduce costs. Even the test mule spotted by Swarnim lacked DRLs, so we can definitely expect a starting price of around Rs. 22 lakhs.

The Audi A3 uses Volkswagen’s MQB platform and is a front-wheel drive vehicle. It will be powered by a 1.4-litre TFSI petrol engine and 2.0-litre TDI diesel engine, both these engine are already doing duty on the Volkswagen Jetta. The diesel engine produces 150 PS of power and 320 Nm of torque and has a claimed mileage of 24.39 km/l. The petrol engine produces 120 BHP and 200 Nm. Audi will locally assemble the A3 in India and might even manufacture the vehicle in our country in the distant future.
