Hyundai Grand i10 Launch

Hyundai has launched the Grand i10 in India, a new hatchback which will sit between the first gen i10 and i20. The Grand i10 is the second generation i10 but has minor differences with the global model. For India, Hyundai has given a 100 mm longer wheelbase. The Hyundai Grand i10 is offered with two engines in our country and the car is targeted at the youth aged between 25 to 30 years. The Grand i10 is available in 8 colours and Hyundai has offered a long list of features, with many of them being segment first.

The 1.2-litre Kappa petrol engine in the Hyundai Grand i10 uses Dual VTVT to produce 83 PS of power at 6000 RPM and 114 Nm of torque at 4000 RPM. It is mated to 5-speed manual and 4-speed automatic transmissions (automatic version to be launched later). The ARAI certified mileage for the petrol powered Grand i10 is 18.9 km/l. The diesel engine in the Hyundai Grand i10 is the new 1.1-litre U2 CRDi mill which outputs 71 PS of power at 4000 RPM and 160 Nm of torque at 4000 RPM. This engine is mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox and boasts of class leading 24 km/l ARAI mileage.

The Hyundai Grand i10 has three segment unique features – rear AC vents, integrated 2-DIN MP3 audio system with in-built 1 GB memory and 2-tone design diamond cut alloy wheels. Other features on the Grand i10 include rear parking sensors, tilt steering, leather steering wheel, smart key with push button start/stop, multifunction steering wheel with Bluetooth, audio and trip meter controls, gearshift indicator, auto folding outside rear view mirrors with electric adjust, turn indicators on mirrors, cooled glove box, rear spoiler, auto down function for driver side power window, chrome door handles, rear defogger, rear washer and wiper, driver seat height adjust, body side moulding, roof rails, front and rear power outlets, dual airbags and ABS.

The Hyundai Grand i10 competes with the Maruti Suzuki Ritz, Honda Brio, Ford Figo and Chevrolet Beat in the Indian market. All these cars boast of similar engine size as the Grand i10 but Hyundai is trying to beat them by offering more features, space and mileage.

    It undercuts Ritz across many variants, thats really life threatening to already staggering Ritz, plus i10 Grande’s bench marking with VW Up! for dynamic and comfort could cause more fatal. Real Angry Bird like catapult throw.

      But, I don’t think YL7 be any better product then Ritz. It seems to be as sizable but cheaper version of good old i10. MS do need to improve the aspiration value of Ritz.

      impossible.swift has more edge in terms of dynamic-ability and it,s a 1.3 ltr tried and tested multijet engine. and very refined yet frugal k series petrol can rely a new 1.ltr 3 cyl diesel

      agreed swift is a better car for highways…but there are many people who will just cruise at 0-90 at highways & wd be using car mainly in cities…so it will surely affect swift considering many better features & a killer price tag!

    The design is bland and very conservative. Its i20’ish but headlamps really don’t do justice to the overall theme. They had learnt a lesson with Eon which I think is better designed that Gi10. Diesel will bring in the numbers but I think petrol needs a price revision to undercut Brio and Stingray by significant margin.

    G i10 is segment above Wagon R, it lies in between Wagon R and Swift.
    It has more space and features on offer.
    The price is not too competitive but will sure offer more value for money you pay.

    Hyundai offered good list of features and space and created a different segment,
    I find this move analogous to Eon. Eon is being sold in good numbers because of the feature it offers in entry level segment.

    IMO, G i10 can be a bestseller or second bestseller for Hyundai.

      I really don’t consider Maruti to be a top car maker although numbers say so. IMO, they make substandard cars which are never thoroughly tested, and neither are they bolted well together. Tell me how many people complain about rattling noises @ 20k kms, my guess is more than 80% would say yes. Hyundai is much more stringent and has good business and corporate governance compared to Maruti.

    when petrol option is considered, I think string ray is more value for money offering. it also has many segment first features. it’s only drawback is it’s 68bhp engine wrt 83bhp. but looking into the history of eon, i20 and verna, all have class leading power but they are never translated into real life. so we can assume that gi10 too. but the diesel variant is a definite welcome if it’s really capable.

      @Ben: Maruti uses thinnest possible gauge of metal sheet. They feel like tin cans and StingRay is no exception. Add to that the underpowered k10 engine and i think really there is ‘nothing in that everything’. You cannot buy a car just because it offers projector headlamps.

    Drove the i10 Grand diesel Asta variant. I must say hyundai has a winner in the small diesel car segment. The interiors are roomy, fit and finish excellent, adequate boot space. The engine is very responsive inspite being
    3 cylinder, 1100 cc. Engine sound into the cabin is well restricted if you compare it with the swift, figo and beat engine. The final deciding factor will be the price.

    Gi10 is an impressive car in all sense. The ride quality is good, leg space and head room is quite ample. At 4000 rpm and liitle beyond it has no clutters with 1.1 litre, 3 cylinder engine the response is linear and impeccable. Worth buying when it comes to performance but its little overpriced. May be a VFM deal in long term.

    The grand i10 diesel has only a 1.1 liter 3-cylinder engine, so it will get heated faster on long-distance highway cruises.

    The Ritz, Figo, Brio, and Sail all have 4-cylinder diesel engines. Beat diesel has a 3-cylinder engine and now grand i10 has 3-cylinder diesel engine.

    Why is hyundai experimenting on customers? First, they brought Eon with 3-cylinder 800cc petrol engine, which customers found to be really under-powered. Now, based on customer feedback, hyundai is going to upgrade Eon with 1.1 liter 4-cylinder petrol engine shortly.

    What will happen to grand i10 diesel after few years? Maybe, it will also be upgraded to 1.3 liter 4-cylinder diesel engine for more power.

    • True, 1 more cylinder and the 1.1-litre diesel engine becomes the 1.4-litre one which already does duty in the i20.

      There is no co-relation between engine heating up and it being a 3 cylinder engine. Hyundai, unlike Maruti is particular in testing their cars in different environments. So they pretty much cover all these things. This is just business economics and not experimentation.
