The Maruti Celerio isn’t a game changer but undoubtedly better than the cars it replaces.

No matter how hard you try, somethings just aren’t heard, like in the case of automobiles how often have we heard India’s largest car manufacturer having a flop model in its portfolio. Rarely, but when Maruti Suzuki’s product does fail to sell, the company quickly makes amends by discontinuing the model and replacing it with something better. Such has been the case always and that’s why the Japanese automaker is replacing not one but two of its poorly performing cars in India with one product. The Zen Estilo and A-Star are being replaced by the Celerio, a car which also fills in the shoes of the Splash globally. Does the Maruti Celerio have what it takes to replace three cars? Suzuki thinks so, its ideology behind developing the Celerio was to make a vehicle which has the economy of the Alto (A-Star) and space of the Splash (Ritz). We put the Maruti Celerio through the thick and thin to see if this Maruti has what it takes to be a success.

Exteriors – When was the last time you saw a well designed Maruti Suzuki car go into production, not easy to recall, right. This was long back when the Swift was first launched in 2005. The company has some excellent designers on board who put in all their energy in designing stellar concepts, just look at the R-III, XA Alpha, Authentics and iV-4. Heck, even look at the A:Wind which is the concept version of the Celerio and you would know what we mean. Somehow, the transition from concept to production messes many a things at Suzuki and that’s why the Celerio has ended up looking like a boring car. What happens when you take four cars and try to design a new vehicle taking inspiration from them. The result is the Maruti Celerio. The front looks very much like the Toyota Etios, the side profile has a bit of A-Star in it while the rear is almost like the Alto 800.

The side of the Maruti Celerio resembles the A-Star to quite an extent

From certain angles, you will also notice the resemblance to the Zen Estilo. In fact when we went to drive the car, we saw it first from the rear and turned away thinking it’s the Alto 800, such is the resemblance. Even the A:Wind looked better although it has a similar shape. What has changed are the bumpers and lights which have totally robbed away the good appearance of the car. The LXi and VXi trim don’t get body coloured rear view mirrors and door handles while the ZXi also gets turn indicators on the rear view mirrors. This truly is a car which doesn’t look fresh at all and the styling really makes you believe it’s the replacement for the Alto 800 not A-Star.

Interior borrows parts from bigger cars like the Swift and DZire

Interiors – Maruti Suzuki has done a fabulous job with the interiors of the Celerio. Compared to the A-Star, there is a massive leap in terms of dashboard design and that’s solely because the company has lifted interior bits from its flagship hatchback. The gear lever and steering wheel come from the Swift but there are additional buttons for the Bluetooth telephony which are placed very unconventionally and seem like an after thought. The U-shaped centre console houses an integrated audio system with USB, AUX, CD, etc with manual AC controls. The dashboard has dual tone black and beige with neat contrasting silver inserts around the centre console and side AC vents.

Decent legroom at the rear with good headroom but under-thigh support is lacking

There are decent storage spaces inside the cabin, the space below the AC vents is very much like the Swift with the same pattern of the ports. The gear lever is close to the dashboard like seen on the Ritz, this liberates space near the handbrake (there is a bottle holder behind it). There is an open storage box below the right most AC vent (ticket holder in marketing speak) and the doors have decent sized pockets too although the glovebox isn’t large enough to store much. Quality inside is sub par, both our test cars had things falling off and fit and finish really needs a re-visit. Panel gaps on a brand new car isn’t expected in today’s day and age, specially not from Maruti Suzuki. This comes as a shock considering the Celerio is a global model and such kind of quality will not be tolerated by international customers.

Tachometer and gear indicator is standard on all Auto Gear Shift variants

The Maruti Celerio has decent space inside the cabin and the company has managed to squeeze a lot of interior room. Space at the front was never a problem with the A-Star but the rear was very cramped, this has been resolved now. Tall people can sit at the rear although due to the narrow width of the car, the rear bench is best fit for two passengers. While rear legroom is decent and headroom is in abundance even for a six footer, under thigh support is just lacking. The car uses fixed headrests on all seats which hampers comfort at the rear although the front seats are quite comfortable but tend to vibrate a lot at low speeds due to the engine which lacks proper damping.

VXi variant lacks quite a lot of features but Automatic isn’t available in ZXi trim

Maruti Suzuki has offered quite a lot of features in the Celerio including small bits like auto-locking doors, immobiliser, auto down driver side window, rear defogger, electrically adjustable rear view mirrors, etc. We are however baffled to see the Auto Gear Shift version is available only in LXi and VXi trim. The regular manual is offered in an additional ZXi and ZXi option variants. ABS, co-passenger airbag (driver side airbag is available in ZXi), alloy wheels, driver seat height adjustment and fog lamps are only offered in the option pack. So those who want the convenience of an automatic, don’t really deserve to be safe, that’s what Maruti feels. Not offering ZXi trim for the Auto Gear Shift model is simply not acceptable.

235-litres boot is even bigger than that of the Swift’s 216-litres

All variants of the Auto Gear Shift model get a tachometer and gear position indicator. The instrument cluster is very neat and has a large speedometer in the centre with a chrome outline. There is a LCD screen on the right which shows the fuel meter, odometer, trim meter, time, outside temperature, distance to empty, fuel consumption and low fuel warning lamp. The boot is decently sized at 235-litres (more boot space than the Swift) and the rear seats can be flipped forward in 60:40 split format which aids in practicality (not offered on the base LXi). The Celerio is a very light car (around 830 kgs) and that’s not really a good thing as the complete vehicle feels flimsy. Safety was certainly not a criteria when developing this car.

1.0-litre K-Series engine gets a host of changes and is now called K-Next

Performance – The Maruti Celerio uses the same engine which powered the cars it replaces. It is the same motor which propels the Wagon R but sees some changes. The 1.0-litre K10B motor (now called K-Next) gets drive-by-wire technology (instead of a mechanical linkage), reduced friction (thanks to redesigned valve springs), high pressure injectors and low viscosity engine oil. The changes aren’t a world apart but do end up improving the performance from the car which now produces the same 68 PS of power at 200 RPM earlier. Being a 3-cylinder unit, the Celerio’s engine has its achilles heel, the NVH is very poor which is amplified by the low weight of the car, resulting in everything from the gear lever to the pedals and seats vibrating at idle (noise isn’t much though but vibes are very intrusive). What the low weight does help in is, it gives the Maruti Celerio slick performance in the city, you do however have to keep the pedal depressed at low speeds to prevent stalling in crawling traffic, specifically in first gear.

Engine has lots of vibes at idle although low end city performance is good

The 3-pot unit is quick to respond to throttle inputs at low speeds and moves swiftly in stop and go conditions. However like most Suzuki petrol powertrains, rev the nuts of the motor and it makes an unpleasing whine, the Celerio goes one step ahead and sounds massively coarse near the 6100 RPM redline. The car debuts an improved 5-speed gearbox which although has slick shifts, can be a bit of an effort to use till you get used to the slight stiffness. The 1.2-litre K12 engine in the Ritz and Swift would have made a world of a difference to the Celerio but Maruti Suzuki is focussed on mileage, which the smaller petrol mill will deliver in abundance. Our VBOX runs with both manual and automatic versions of the Maruti Celerio revealed the 0-100 km/hr time to be 15.05 and 15.60 seconds respectively, which is decently quick for a car with such a pint sized motor.

Automated manual transmission is a cost effective automatic but is jerky

The A-Star was offered with an automatic but Maruti Suzuki has opted for a cost effective solution with the Celerio, which uses an automated manual transmission, technology sourced from Magneti Marelli. This transmission is shared with the manual and doesn’t have a torque converter (thereby returns the same mileage as a manual), instead it uses an ECU to control gear shifts (using actuators), eliminating the need of a physical clutch. There is a creep mode which prevents clutch wear in slow moving conditions while a hold function prevents roll back on slopes. You have the option of leaving the box in auto mode while there is a manual mode as well (slot the lever to the left) wherein you can keep the gear engaged till redline to extract the most out of this mill. The EZ Drive does make driving very convenient but is very jerky and you can feel the clutch being activated most of the time. Since this is an automated manual gearbox, there is no P mode like in traditional automatics (there is M, D, N and R modes). The company claims a fuel efficiency of 23.1 km/l which is quite impressive.

Handling is good but steering lacks feedback at speed and doesn’t weigh up

Driving Dynamics – The biggest plus point about the Maruti Celerio is indeed how easy it is to drive. Piloting the car in congested traffic is effortless, more so if you are driving the model equipped with the automatic gear shift. Ride quality is very good, more so at low speeds as the suspension is on the softer side with the tyres running a high profile. Ride quality can get a bit messy at the rear as speeds build up, more so on really bad roads where the complete vehicle rattles a bit. Steering has no feel, while it’s light at low speeds, it simply doesn’t weigh up at high speeds. The EPS unit has little feedback to offer.

Softly sprung suspension offers good ride quality, more so at low speeds

Small cars can be quite fun to throw around corners but the low grip tyres don’t help the Celerio’s cause. Yes the Celerio handles quite well and is very stable at speed but it somehow isn’t as agile as the Honda Brio, a car with which it will rub shoulders in India. Lack of ABS on the Auto Gear Shift model isn’t understandable at all, nor is ABS only being offered as part of an option on the ZXi trim digestible. This comes from a manufacturer who offers ABS as an option on mid-level variants of the Ritz and Swift while making it standard on all diesel trims of the Ertiga. Braking performance is decent but the pedal could offer better feel.

Maruti Celerio Auto Gear Shift Review

The Celerio isn’t vastly improved from its predecessor which is dissapointing

Verdict – The Maruti Celerio is an improved product, compared to the A-Star whose direct replacement it is. However it isn’t a vastly improved product which makes you question why the manufacturer did not go the long haul in taking a car which bombed so miserly, to the next level. The regular manual version of the Celerio doesn’t appeal much with the EZ Drive model being the only saving grace here. By using the intelligent and cost effective option, Maruti Suzuki will offer the cheapest automatic car in India in the Celerio. Although very jerky, the ease of driving offered by the Auto Gear Shift in the Celerio is sure to appeal to those on a budget. Being a Maruti Suzuki with a vast dealership network and aggressive pricing (for the lower trims), the Celerio is bound to be a success. However if you want a manual hatchback at this price point, there are better options.

The Maruti Celerio is a jack of some trades but master of none. Maruti continues to cut corners on several fronts and sadly safety is at the forefront of this exercise. The Celerio’s Auto Gear Shift is the only reason worth considering the vehicle.

    Cent percent spot on, its looks more like Alto800. Your test results reveals its negativity, though I’m not disappointed since I was expecting the similar outcome for this car.

      Well in that sense, I’m also disappointed since Ritz is far superior w.r.t this half baked product. Wish Global Suzuki also think of continuing Ritz/Splash instead of replacing it.

    • Ritz will continue in India for eternity but globally it will be replaced. The idea was to make a product which has space of the Ritz and mileage of the Alto.

      I think it’s the Maruti guys who advise them saying this or that won’t appeal to Indian buyers. Well, since we don’t know the facts, we can’t decide who’s mistake it is. So please don’t accuse Suzuki or any other company for that matter of anything without knowing the truth. Suzuki is a great company and they wouldn’t simply take advantage of their name only. Their designs are great but they are trying to appeal the Indian buyers by making changes as probably advised by Maruti guys. I wish they knew Indian customers such as me simply like Japanese designs just the way they are.

    I don’t think comparing it to a i10 is a good enough comparison because the i10 has 4 cylinder engine not a 3 pot
    I think this is going to flop after the initial buzz and blind bookings come down

    • i10 or Grand i10, none of them come with a 3-cylinder so on that merit alone, which car will this be compared with? Every manufacturer is using a 4-cylinder petrol engine in this segment, except Nissan.

    Considering the i10 and the Brio offer quality and refinement on way better levels. It’s more of an alternative to the Alto 800 or the K10 for that matter.

    Nice unbiased review!! Initial spy pics were encouraging but Suzuki has delivered yet another eye sore which has design elements from all over.Not giving even body coloured door handles on VXi trim is criminal and a shameless cost cutting exercise. People should abandon such featureless cars, only then will they realize that they cannot take things for granted.
    MS cars in that range are tin cans be it Wagon R/Stingray or Estilo or now this Celerio. Celerio will turn you into celery if you are involved in an accident.

    • Only we the consumers can change Maruti’s perspective. They are misusing the position to play with people, no safety features in most of their cars is a sad affair.

      Does all Hyundai cars have safety features.tell if any version of eon have it or even the top variant of grand has it optional. Maruti even provide airbag with the A segment alto 800.

    This is definitely a biased review.I think the author has some revenge with maruti or he hate maruti.I read review about this car in overdrive and auto car and they emphasis about its pluses and minuses.but here the author trying to bring out negative points only [ deliberately or not ].But before tha grand i 10 this car doesn’t look fresh.

    • Rohit, drive the car and then tell us if you share mutual feelings or not. We always stand for the truth. Just see all our reviews about Maruti cars, we have always been positive about the Swift, DZire, Ertiga and even SX4 but the Celerio just falls short on various counts.

      @ Rohit: Tell me how this is biased. At 840kgs, do u expect thickest gauge of sheet metal? or VXi not getting even body coloured door handles is justified? Even Nano top end gets body coloured door handles, stereo system, front power windows @ half the price.
      Autocar and Overdrive are always diplomatic in their approach. They never give out a decisive review. So if you have a problem with frank and unbiased reviews, feel free to go somewhere else. This forum does not need prejudiced guys like you.

    See I’m not belonging to any car brand.Like any human being I have some doubts.Most of your approches towards a particular brand make me to think so.I’ll give u an example in your comparo between the swift and grand i 10 u guys selected grand i 10.the grand i 10 diesel is a sluggish car.but its a feature rich car and good to look.FE is marginally better than the swift.but the handling and dynamics are worst like an hyundai.Look at your video review b/n swift and i 20 ans see how people comment about your video

    • Rohit, I request you to read the Grand i10 vs Swift review once again, I have clearly stated the Swift is in a different league when it comes to dynamics, the Grand i10 can’t hold a candle in front of the Swift’s steering, Swift is the faster car that too by a significant amount. If you see my comments also, when people say they want a driver’s car, I always suggest the Swift. So there is no bias, we are frank, read any of our reviews, what is the fact, that’s stated, If Hyundai cars have poor handling, we are the first to write about it. Just look at the Elantra vs Octavia vs Jetta sedan comparison or even the City vs Verna vs Vento.

      As far as selecting Grand i10 goes, we selected it as most people who plan on buying either cars was comparing Swift VXi/VDi with Grand i10 Asta, the latter being much more value was our choice. We can only help people understand the characteristics of the car, the rest is for them to decide what fits the requirements better.

    The auto magazines usually go ga-ga over any new product, and never mention the negatives other than in a passing reference. They do this so that the car makers (prime advertisers) do not get annoyed and continue to advertise with them.

    Coming to the car, I think Maruti have flattered to deceive. I had my hopes high after seeing the A Wind concept, the initial spy pictures and the automated manual gearbox. I’m kind of disappointed now with the lack of refinement and more importantly, lack of safety features on the automated manual variants. If the EZ Drive gearbox is going to be this car’s USP, then why deny it the safety features? Shocking! Don’t auto gearbox buyers deserve to be safe?

    There seems to be an error in the specifications mentioned. The lower variants’ tyres are 155/80R13 ones, and not 60 profile. Also, I think only the ZXi gets 165/70R14 tyres.

      The wider tyres are on both VXi and LXi variants and yes the profile is 80 not 60, thanks for the heads-up.

    • At least a VXi option variant with safety features should have been offered. I have driven the car, it doesn’t feel safe and the body is really flimsy.

      y this safety aspect not this much given in your reviews in Grand i 10 … it too had ABS /Airbag in the Asta that too in option model ..

      Atleast Celerio gives driver airbag in Zxi version .. it adds up other front airbag and abs in the optional model.

      IF you are so strong and same criticize u did for the grand i10 Sportz model .i will be happy and call u as unbiased reviewer.

    • Ignatius, had Hyundai offered airbags, ABS in only in one version, then we would have complained about it. Both petrol and diesel get ABS and airbags although as an option. When we reviewed the car, the AT version wasn’t available, nor was it announced but it too doesn’t get an ABS/Airbag version. Maruti does offer ABS and airbags as an option but why don’t they do the same with the Auto Gear Shift model, why isn’t it available in ZXi trim? Don’t AT buyers deserve to be safe, the same stands for Hyundai too, a point we will definitely highlight when we review the Grand i10 AT.

    Celerio is certainly a bummer. Does not look good, does not seems to be well built and lacks equipment. But it being Maruti will still sell well. Though I believe it will be a trend setter for Automatic cars in India.
    I love motorbeam, wish you included Price List of cars sold in India, which could be refreshed regularly..

    Review SU***!!!…. Every point has weight age. First comes Performance of the car and handling.Then comes safety (For Indian customers). But review SU***!!! only about features. Look All the Maruti GLOBAL cars are qualified in NCAP TEST. Hyundai i10 GLOBAL car has failed.

    At the end of the day INDIAN customers will give the verdit, And Maruti CELERIO will be BIG TIME WINNER!!!. Please check this post after 2 months. YOU WILL REGRET!!!

    Appreciate the review and i must say its an honest review. Saw the Celerio today at the dealership today and i cant help but agree with the review. It’s funny that maruti fans are coming out and defending the car. The review mentions that quality is flimsy, 100% agree. The review also mentions that it is better than a star. 100% agree. The review also says that it will be a hit cuz its a maruti and the auto shift gearbox will definitely start a trend. But i am shocked that auto box not offered in zxi. Why maruti? As far as grand i10 is concerend, celerio will compete with i10 in global market and thus comparison is justified. Kudos to Motorbeam for being the first to bring out this review and be very honest and open about it. maruti lovers, please appreciate that despite your negative comments, your comments are still displayed. i know other publications who will just delete the negative comments.

    I just hate this concept car, Suzuki is playing a double game in India, If the same car is launched in US or UK the features and safety measures are awesome, when comes to india with Same model, they are carrying only airo dynamic design not features and safety measure. We need ban these cars proactively.

    Bottom line is that maruti folks has mastered the art of minting money from Indian consumers. I wont be surprised if this car too sells like hot cakes. We have the worst of road and traffic condition all over the country and quite ironically one can see the least of safety features in top selling brands like maruti.. Remember, when you try to save a lakh or two by buying a cheap and unsafe car you are compromising on yours and your family’s safety too.. No one would want to ferry their kids in these unsafe tin boxes.. Safety First Anyday ..

    Is the worry about safety in automatic models only or about manual models also? When there was no problem about Zen Estilo , A star and Wagon R with the similar tin, weight and engine how suddenly it cropped up now? Alto, Nano, Figo and i10 failed the crash test and not the above three. Your comment pl?

    Faizal thanks a lot for this detailed review. I was planning to shift from Alto k10 to Celerio for AMT but I hoped it did not have vibration issues as in alto k10. Swift is the best choice in this case.

    Faizal, don’t have any reply to my queries? I am a senior citizen. I wanted to purchase A star or Estilo in November. My nephew said it is a failure. He also informed that Estilo will be discontinued. He purchased i10. I had other options like spark L.S./ Santro. Many others said they don’t have a resale value. My choice is santro size and spark size traditional car shape design, 1000 or 1100 cc with a mileage of above 16 kmpl, cost no bar. Can you suggest to me a perfect choice please? IIf there is none, when will be celerio on road?

      There are interesting new cars coming in: the Datsun Go is one of them. Of the current ones you can opt for i10.

    A review written straight from the heart it seems!! Good Job!! You really do want Maruti to make good vehicles that they are capable of and hence your disappointment..However a few points..Please take the reports of NCAP and other so called independent agencies like IIHS etc. with a pinch of salt. They all have their agenda and do not do charity for anybody. think about it. EU is pushing for FTA with India including for cars. Indian Automotive manufacturers are resisting. Then out of the blue Global NCAP which is based in EU publishes this report of cars being unsafe with only the EU maker (Read Volkswagen) coming out smelling of roses. I work for consulting agencies which does a lot of automotive work. Deloitte did a study for EU where in they concluded to ensure easy selling of EU made cars in India, out of many approaches, one was to ensure cost of Indian Cars go up.(Apart from low duties etc.) How? NCAP is the answer!! Either the Indian manufacturers shut shop or Car cost goes up to unviable level.

      Maruti earlier proposed to launch A Star Eco as a facelift model. It has now launched Celerio. Have they dropped the idea of A Star Eco?

    Nice Review Faisal. Congratulations for publishing the detailed review of the car.I seen lot of other reviews but they are not mentioning the negative parts :)as u said this just like a ALTO800 in rear..!

    In LXI AUTO GEAR no body colored ORVM, no body colored door handle,no Accessory outlet ,no alloy wheels, no sterio, cant adjust the driver seat height, no rear wiper…!!! no ABS, no airbag, then what this LXI stand for??

    I was expected the celerio design as per the A WIND but this celerio made disappointed :(
    Also no ZXI in the Auto gear shif t mode!! thats really a stupid thing!!!

    Today i have gone for test drive of Celerio VXi AMT. Totally disappointed by the looks and quality of the Car. on-road price is coming around 5.33 lacs that too for such a featureless car. No Music system, no remote central locking, no boot lid opener, no fog lamps even seats are made of very bad thickness. Taken a test drive and found that engine is making much noise when pressing the padel for overtaking. At low speeds its ok but as it crosses 40 it shows the cheapness of the Tech used.
    This car is only having weight of 810 kg which is again indicating that Maruti has tried to fool the buyers on offering such a low quality vehical at premium price. This car is nott safe as well as comfortable. on bumpy roads Celerio is just behaving like old Alto.
    Going to buy Grand i10 AT Sports… what a car it is…

    The plastic trims are disappointing ….v v poor quality…the best part being the boot space and legroom….do agree with the stiff gear and awkward headrests

    • Legroom is a definite improvement over the A-Star but under thigh support is just missing.

    After driving this car my opinion about car has been changed. It is really a nice car having so many safety masers in its higher segment zxi(o) like anti braking system ABS, dual air bags, immobilizer and some more features like rear deffoger, driver seat hight adjustment, fog lamps, alloy wheels, blue tooth connectivity, mobile charger. Its a realy good feeling with nice head room availability.

    I am literally disappointed with your review….. i have personally drove this vehichles zxi trim and its a far more better than your review…… and also u are comparing an 996cc engine with 1197cc engine of grand i 10 or that of brio….. in terms of size this car is equally sized to grand i10 … provide better fuel economy than grand i10 …..and far more cheap than grand i10. in terms of features its equal to grand….. now who will go to buy grand if he could get a similar sized car spending less money …… and also a maruti vehichle which is known for its after sales service.

    First of all, thanks for all your comments. For an Eg : Out of ten reviews only 2-3 says this car is fine and others have simply blasted it. Faisal i like your comments in many places but let me put the real fact. If people want safety and comfort they have to pay more., ZXI (O) optional has all what you said is missing also with an affordable rate at 5.60 lakhs. today at this rate no other car is available with these features ( I tried Hyundai, Honda, Cheverlot, Tata, Nissan) its almost fully loaded( ABS, 2 sided Airbag, driver seat adj, fog lamps, alloy wheels) and you dont need to spend even a penny. Most importantly with today’s petrol prices and traffic no other have quoted a mileage of 23.2KMPL ( Other than honda amaze diesel ) atleast you would get 19 in our chennai city traffic. Its really a nice car , people wanting of cheaper rate and mileage effiiciency can go for this. My personal drawback is the rear back which is not up to the mark, looks very funky and more or less like A- Start. Also one thing which is surprising is till today there is no such huge bookings for this vehicle and estimated delivery the showroom person says in 1 week or less, with another dealer he said by today evening also its possible. MS start proper marketing for your vehicle, else with these reviews will blow down your sales. GOOD LUCK !!!!!

      sir, please check it again….. i personally have booked its zxi trim and has a waiting period of 1 month also…… there are over 32000 bookings till now and waiting period for AMT version is nearly 6 months and for manual transmission is 3 months. also , every dealer has 1 or 2 models in stock………so they may be offering that to you……same was the case with me , but i wanted zxi white colour ….which was not available so has to wait.

    I am looking for an upgrade for my 5 year old Alto Lxi. I am considering Celerio Vxi AMT and Swift Vxi. My preferences are easy to drive, fuel economy, good apace. I am not bothered about power and performance.
    On road price quoted in Calicut,Kerala for swift Vxi is 5.65L and Celerio is 5.15L .
    So which is the best choice.

      dont go with the global reviews… jst deside your self… in your budjet…. jst go and check the car directly… as a fact at low cost how can we expect more look and high specifications….. go with your choice… i am not saying the car is extremely good.. bt its a family car with reasonable cost…. and we are jst buying budjet car…. not a costly yar to provide extreme features….

    Excellent review. I think maruthi Suzuki is trying to sell so called auto gear shift in a very costly gift pack called celerio. I would suggest to buy a Ritz instead of celerio.
