With the current generation Elantra mid-size sedan heading towards the end of its life-cycle, Hyundai has commenced testing the next generation model and the first of the prototype was spotted in China this week. Covered heavily in camouflage, the 2016 Hyundai Elantra retains a similar silhouette as the outgoing model with a coupe-like roofline, while the overall design theme taking inspiration from the Fluidic Design Sculpture 2.0 and is currently seen on the new generation Sonata as well as the Elite i20.

The spy shots show the 2016 Hyundai Elantra with a large front grille and a new headlight cluster that appears to be more mature and less flamboyant than the outgoing model. The headlights also come equipped with projector lamps, while integrated LED daytime running lights are much expected. The rear on the other hand gets a redesigned tail light cluster equipped with LEDs apart from changes to the rear bumper and boot-lid. Details on the powertrain are still scarce but updates could come to the existing engines options for improved power and fuel efficiency as well as lower CO2 emissions.

The 2016 Hyundai Elantra will be unveiled by the end of 2015 in the company’s home market of South Korea, while an Indian launch is expected by early 2016. In the meantime, Hyundai India will be updating the Elantra sedan next year with a subtle revision to the design with more features on offer. The sedan is currently offered with a 1.8-litre petrol and a 1.6-litre diesel motor, paired to 6-speed manual and automatic transmission options. More details on the new Elantra will be revealed as we head closer to the launch.
