Renault’s diversion towards cost-effective products with the Dacia brand paid off well in Europe, especially during the global recession period. Moreover, the products also made the automaker’s entry into cost effective emerging markets far easier. While Renault has been working on a new low cost compact SUV to be positioned below the Duster, news comes in that the automaker is also working on a range of entry-level models that will be based on a new low-cost platform especially targeted at emerging markets.

A French news report states that Renault has been working to bring four models based on a new low cost ‘CAMM’ platform and will be tucked under the 4-metre length. The four new models include the upcoming XBA hatchback that is scheduled for launch next year along with a compact sedan, SUV and MPV. The new low cost models will be competing in the entry-level space and will be targeted at emerging markets including India, Brazil and Argentina, among others.

The sub 4-metre MPV space will soon find its first offering in the form of Datsun GO+ that is scheduled for launch early next year. Maruti also plans to launch a 7-seater MPV based on the Wagon R that will be tucked under the 4-metre mark for India and Indonesian markets. At present, Renault India is planning to launch the Lodgy MPV in India that will be competing against the Honda Mobilio and the Maruti Ertiga in the segment.

The new sub 4-metre MPV on the other hand would be postioned below the Lodgy and will have to be priced very competitively in the segment. The sedan could also find its way in India to compete against the range of compact sedans on offer. Renault is currently studying the feasibility for launching such products and the final nod of approval is still to come from the head honchos of the company. A timeline for launch cannot be determined as yet.
