The i20 Cross shares its underpinnings with the Elite i20 but will get additional body cladding and new features on offer to rival the Fiat Avventura.

Hyundai India has planned two all-new SUV launches for 2015 and the first of the lot is set to hit the market very soon. A report suggests that the South Korean car maker will be launching the i20 based crossover ‘i20 Cross’ in the country on 9th March 2015. The i20 Cross is essentially a regular Elite i20 with rugged clothes and a few more features added to the list and will be competing in the newly found hatchback-SUV sub-segment.

With the plethora of spy shots that have emerged online over the past couple of months, the basic essentials on the new i20 Cross are already known. Doing a recap, the crossover will come with black body cladding at the sides and wheel arches along with skid plates on the front and rear bumper. The bumpers have also been reworked and are finished in black instead of the body coloured ones found on the hatchback version. In addition, the i20 Cross will get LED DRLs, new and larger 10-spoke alloy wheels, raised ground clearance, chunky roof rails and certain SUV specific features inside the cabin.

Power options will continue to be the same 1.2-litre petrol and 1.4-litre diesel engines paired to a 5-speed and 6-speed manual respectively. Going by the difference seen between the Volkswagen Polo and Cross Polo, as well as Fiat Punto Evo and Avventura, expect the i20 Cross to be priced at around Rs. 50-70,000/- premium than its hatchback derivative. With the Elite i20 flying off the shelves, literally; the i20 Cross is expected to keep the momentum going for Hyundai India which will be further fuelled by the ix25 set for launch in the second half of this year.
