The Hyundai Santro was a strong seller since its launch in 1997

Hyundai began its journey in India with the launch of Santro in 1997 that received an overwhelming response with immediate effect, thanks to clever marketing. The Santro got some spark at the affordable segment of cars during the mundane days of Maruti hatchbacks like the 800 and Zen, which was a gem of a car but offered nothing exciting to the buyers. Hyundai Santro was the trend setter of power steering, which offered great convenience for congested traffic conditions like ours.

Butter light steering, peppy and efficient engine and comfortable interiors loaded with equipment were the talking points of the Hyundai Santro. Also, the offbeat tallboy styling from Hyundai was a breath of fresh air amongst simple hatchbacks at that time. The Korean automaker kept updating the Santro frequently over the years, which helped them in building good customer base. It was a strong seller throughout its 17 years of existence until December 2014, when only one unit of the Santro was dispatched.

The Hyundai Santro still has a healthy demand in the market but the automaker stopped production as they saw better profit and future with models like Eon, i10 and Grand i10. Powering the Hyundai Santro is a 1.1-litre petrol engine producing 62 BHP with 96 Nm of torque, mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox. The entry level hatchback returned 17 km/l of fuel efficiency and came with a starting price of Rs. 3.05 lakhs. The Santro was also being offered in CNG and LPG variants.
