The 10-spoke alloy wheels add to the premium feel on the Indica replacement

Tata Motors is resting its first indigenously developed car to peace later this year. The mighty Indica that changed the fate of the company in the passenger car segment will finally go off the production line to make way for something new and better equipped. The ‘Kite’ as they call it within the closed doors of the company, a new model based on the revised X0 platform will be stepping into the Indica’s shoes and with the new spy shots emerged online, we think Tata might just have a winner up its sleeve.

Expected to go on sale around June this year, the 2015 Tata Kite hatchback was caught testing recently with complete camouflage, but giving a glimpse of the dimensions and design language of the car. A major step up from the utilitarian Indica, the Kite boasts of a lot more premium appeal which is evident from the newly designed alloy wheels. While the character lines have been hidden under the camouflage, it will be safe to say that the strong shoulder line and belt will add drama to the side profile.

The rear profile comes with a lot more detailing with the Christmas-Tree tail lights seen on the Indica replaced by new horizontally stacked tail lights. The boot-lid is also now a curvy unit; while the bumper looks well designed and houses the registration plate holder. Tata is pushing the new Kite against the Hyundai i10, new Ford Figo, Maruti Celerio and the likes in the segment and the model is certainly looking well dressed against its rivals.

Powering the Kite will be Tata’s new set of engines including the 1.2-litre Revotron petrol unit minus the turbocharger, while the diesel engine will be an all-new 1.05-litre three-cylinder motor expected to churn out around 64 HP and 142 Nm of torque. Both the engines come paired to a 5-speed manual gearbox; while an AMT could also be a possibility at a later stage given the Zest’s success. Tata Motors will be producing the Kite and its sedan derivative at the Sanand facility in Gujarat.
