The Jeep Wrangler will get a diesel engine in addition to the petrol in 2016 and will be commencing operations in India in the second half of this year.

Waiting for its turn to make waves in the Indian market, Jeep has been one of the long awaited launches in the luxury space that parent company Fiat Chrysler Automotive (FCA) has been putting off for quite some time now. Originally scheduled to launch in 2012, the Jeep brand nevertheless will make it to Indian shores later this year and now the automaker has imported two units of the 2015 Wrangler Unlimited Overland in the country for testing purposes.

The Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Overland is the four-door variant of the lifestyle off-roader and is available in a number of configurations including a rear soft top or hard top. While the 3.6-litre Pentastar V6 petrol engine is the mainstay unit on the Wrangler internationally, the models imported in India are equipped with a diesel heart, which makes them so special. The Wrangler is scheduled to get updated with a diesel engine in 2016 internationally and India could be one of the first markets to get the diesel powered off-roader, given our affinity towards the fuel.

The diesel engine in question that will power the Wrangler is the 3.0-litre V6 unit that also does duty on the Grand Cherokee and is capable of producing 240 HP of power and 380 Nm of torque, paired to a 6-speed manual transmission. In international markets, the motor is said to return a fuel efficiency figure of around 12 km/l. Meanwhile, FCA will first launch the petrol powered Wrangler in the country with Command-Trac Shift-on-Fly Part-Time 4WD system, 17-inch wheels, well-appointed interiors and much more. The off-roader will be brought in as a CBU in the country and will be positioned as a brand builder for the company.
