With its range limited to the Duke and RC 200 and 390 series, KTM fans have been asking the Austrian bike maker to introduce its high capacity motorcycles in India. Several private imports were seen over the past few months for the manufacturer’s high capacity offerings, hinting towards the growing demand of bigger orange motorcycles. KTM has imported the 1290 Super Duke R and 1290 Adventure motorcycles in India as per latest import data. The bikes have been brought down for type approval prior to launch in India later this year as KTM’s flagship offerings.

Starting with the KTM 1290 Adventure R, the bike is an adventure tourer that is designed to be extremely compatible on all surfaces. Based on a Trellis frame, power on the 1290 Adventure comes from a 1301cc liquid-cooled, V-twin engine that produces 160 HP of power, paired to a 6-speed gearbox. The adventure bike boasts of a ground clearance of 220 mm and has a kerb weight of 229 kgs. Loaded with goodies, the 1290 Adventure gets WP suspension, combined-ABS, MSC and Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS). A sizeable fuel tank capacity of 30-litres ensures a longer travel range on the bike.

The KTM 1290 Super Duke R, on the other hand, is an absolute hooligan with maddening amounts of power and equally potent riding capabilities involved. The flagship street-fighter comes with a 1301cc 75-degree V-Twin motor with 180 HP of power, paired to a 6-speed transmission. Keeping the power sedated are a bunch electronic aids including Motorcycle Traction Control (MTC), ABS with Supermoto mode and three riding modes. The Super Duke 1290 has been applauded globally for its practicality quotient, which makes the bike comfortable on the highways as well as during roundabouts within city limits.

Both the KTM 1290 Adventure and 1290 Super Duke are going through homologation tests at present in the country and are likely to be launched in the last quarter of 2015. The high performance bikes will be brought in India via the CBU route and will be working as brand builders for the company. KTM will also ensure that prices for its high capacity performance offerings are competitive against rivals in the same space. With the performance market expanding, the new crazy orange beasts are certainly more than welcome.
