Taking a positive step towards improving safety on its vehicles, Maruti Suzuki has announced the introduction of ABS and dual front airbags as optional on the base variants of the Swift and DZire models. Until recently, the safety features were available only on the top-end Z trim of both models as standard. With awareness towards safety increasing, the automaker has responded to public demand while also slowly prepping up its cars for the upcoming crash test norms.

Both the Swift and DZire are Maruti Suzuki’s best selling models clocking over 15,000 units respectively every month. The need for safety features is paramount especially on the more popular vehicles seen on our roads which have also been heavily criticised for their safety standards. The Swift was under heavy scrutiny after the disappointing results of the Global NCAP crash tests having received zero safety rating. This also opened up a debate for the need of safety features on the price conscious models in the country from all manufacturers and it is good to see manufacturers responding on a positive note.

While the safety features are new, the Maruti Swift and DZire continue with the same cosmetic and mechanical details with power coming from a 1.2-litre petrol and a 1.3-litre diesel engine, paired to a 5-speed manual gearbox. The DZire petrol is also offered with a 4-speed automatic transmission. There were reports of Maruti equipping the Swift with the AMT unit, but no detail on the same is out yet.

Apart from the Swift and DZire, Maruti also announced the safety features as optional on the base variants of the Wagon R earlier this month along with the AMT unit. The newly launched Baleno already gets ABS and dual front airbags as standard across all variants while the S-Cross gets the same, with only the driver side airbag as standard on the base trim. Surely, Maruti’s renewed focus towards improving safety levels on its vehicles gets a thumbs up from us and we urge customers to opt for safety tech on their vehicles instead of a brash audio system.
