Sharp and extremely aerodynamic in design, the Ioniq hybrid looks striking

Hyundai will soon break into the green car space that has seen the dominance of Japanese automakers until now as they pioneered new technologies and innovations to reduce the carbon footprint from their vehicles. Making its biggest effort to make its presence felt in the segment, the Korean automaker has officially released the sketches of its upcoming Ioniq hybrid ahead of the world premiere scheduled for later this month. The new model is also available for pre-order in select markets internationally.

The sketches of the Hyundai Ioniq reveal a striking design language with the designers having made the most out of simplistic lines. Giving it the trademark Hyundai look is the massive hexagonal grille up front that seamlessly integrates with the headlamps that feature the C-position lights while the bumper incorporates the vertically stacked LED DRLs. The Hyundai Ioniq hybrid gets a notchback styled rear, ala Toyota Prius; with the couple-like sloping roofline integrated into the boot along with high-mounted tail lights and a large bumper.

Hyundai conveyed that the car has been designed to offer class-leading aerodynamic performance with its slippery shape that will reduce drag. Inside the cabin, the Ioniq looks futuristic with digital screens while also sharing several bits with the all-new Tucson. The company also promises a smooth and uncluttered cabin design while all the materials used are green, which basically means a lot of eco-friendly material has gone into the making of the cabin.

Hyundai is tapping a host of sub-segments as the Ioniq will be the world’s first production car with fully electric, hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrain options in its range. The hybrid will be getting specially developed lithium-ion batteries paired to a 1.6-litre petrol motor, which will also power the fully-electric version. The Ioniq will be making its public debut at the Geneva and New York motor shows later in the year while sales are set to commence in the second half.
