Bajaj Auto has quietly launched the Boxer 150 in India. The Boxer BM150 is powered by a 150cc engine (no DTSi or the likes here) and tuned for more torque, rather then outright power. The Boxer is aimed at the rural market and is a tractor on 2-wheels according to Rajiv Bajaj. Priced at Rs. 42,000/- (ex-showroom, Pune), the Boxer’s only USP is its loading carrying capacity. All drum brakes, electric start and an analog speedometer adorn this ‘Bharat’ bike. The Boxer is designed for use and abuse in all kinds of terrain. The Boxer’s 150 cc engine produces 12 PS of power and 12.26 Nm of torque, almost 50% more than the standard 100 cc bikes. Bajaj claims that the Boxer features a rugged frame, swing arm and chassis. The all metal body parts, twin spring SNS suspension, bigger tyre and a heavy duty carrier ensure the Boxer is at home in most terrains.

Tone of the article is very biased. You are saying speedo is from 80′s.. isn’t it the same on Discovers/SZ and all other analog speedo sporting bikes? Looks like you are enthusiastically writing it off!! first of all if a 150cc bike is offered at 43k ex-showroom, one should learn what to expect from that kind of bike. It’s important to look at the target group of buyers and their expectations. No one said people in rural areas doesn’t deserve style, if they want to buy a stylish bike, there are plenty of options in the market today. This is a utility bike.. a sturdy bike with good torque that can be used for carrying loads & stuff.

Pulsarboy, I am not writing it off. But if Bajaj is so clear of positioning and the likes, why are they so ashamed in even making a website for it? No press release, pictures or official launch of the Boxer 150? Why?

The bike is meant for torque and load carrying capacity… The pic posted by you is also incorrect.. Please don’t try to mislead the readers..

@ 43000 a 150 cc which can seat 3 persons and carry lots of load makes sense, especially for the rural towns..

Aniket, we are not trying to mislead anyone. The picture is of the old Boxer. The price is ex-showroom. Making bike for 3 persons might sound good, but it is illegal for 3 to seat on a bike.

Why there is no publicity? because this bike is on tight budget, they don’t want to spend too much money on it, which makes breakeven difficult. Another reason why only engine has Bajaj.. you can look at latest Pulsars.. they don’t even have Bajaj on bike, does that mean Bajaj is ashamed of Pulsar? They are just trying establish brands with their bikes.. this is a part of strategy that was laid down almost two years ago, refer the old news articles if you need more juice on it.

Pulsarboy, I am aware of their product branding strategy against the current Umbrella branding one. They need to publicize the Boxer. A website won’t cost much as they just need to add a page on their current website.

I am very disappointed with this bike … other than 150 cc .. it does not contain .. anything to counter TVS Max 4R .. which is stablished as load carrier ..

TVS Max 4R has dual suspension , easy Main stand .. but it lacked in CC ..

I thought .. it will counter that bike with 150 cc and have sutiable alternative methods for load carrying ..

the bike resemble the old boxer with extra CC thats all (i dont refer the picture above .. i saw the new boxer in other websites) .. how it will help to gain more load ..

Fas, the purpose of this bike is to be a utility bike for rural, semi-urban conditions. Yes, the bike looks dated but its because it does away with the plastics and has generous amount of chrome. Also, if you have a look at the new boxer(not the one in pic), the travel for rear suspension is really long. These things matter to people who use bikes to lug heavy load.
And even though 3 on a bike is illegal but I would suggest you take a trip to a village or small town. Three on bike is a norm there. Bajaj has a bike for such targeted customers.
Infact, if Yamaha can launch R15, a bike focused for track use, what’s wrong with a bike for rural people?

Sammer, I don’t deny that but they could have done better.

Not advertising due to cost cutting is something I won’t agree with. Remember the heavy advertising on the XCD when it was launched- it was supposedly positioned as a 125cc bike at the price of a 100cc. Rather take an example of any low budget bike on the promotion front.

The rear suspension travel is not that long…the lengthier bottom extension of the shocks, I feel is to cut down on the cost of coils rather.

About the 3 seating statement, you have those Jeeps carrying 20-25 people at one go- does that mean that Mahindra starts adding platforms all round the vehicle so that the people hanging off could stand on it? There are some basic rules that need to be followed as a manufacturer, which we might be not aware for approval of any new vehicle.

Deepak, indirectly Bajaj hints are more people on the Boxer. That is where it is aimed.

On a lighter note, don’t bombard Fas with all your missiles….he’s certainly not the one who’s behind the production ;)

Another point remaining about the instrumentation cluster- if the bare basic design has been criticized, its just not here. If archives are gone through, there were no praises for the Yamaha SZ either, hence the question of being biased doesn’t arise.

@Fas: Sorry for poking in :)

Deepak, there is no poking in and stuff, I appreciate your comments :)

As far as instrument cluster goes, so many times did we criticize the Unicorn and Karizma speedometers.

I think Bajaj is making too many models in the same displacement that is between 100 and 150 CC so people are really confused to choose the product. I don’t think they need this again in the 150 CC segment even they say they have launched for rural market????

fas September 7, 2011 at 2:06 am

Dinesh, Bajaj indeed confuses many buyers but they end up buying some Bajaj motorcycle, even with a bit of cannabilisation.

This bike is really very tough and commendable. For the Lovers of bajaj i would like to tell you that i fall in love for the bike at first sight. It has that Authentic look of Older Bajaj Boxer 100cc. Long Pillion seat and strong chasis and Frame that gives a power pack and rigid look. Riding is smooth without backache unlike the Discover or Pulsar. The Pickup is quite Smart and reaches 60 within 6 Seconds. Maneuring and taking turns can be taken at very ease because of big tyres and sleek design of bike. The body balance is excellent and can be controlled at any traffic congestion. The tank is very sleek and has a powerful head lamp as that of a Bullet which makes even more great looks. But the grab rails and Load holder is the only one which makes the bike little Shabby. This bike will come for a long run as it has mileage of 65 and 4 Shift gears which will outrun the rivals of 100CC Splendour. This bike promises to deliver performance like Caliber,Boxer, CT100. Bajaj has comeout with a Excellent Master piece after a long time for the people most needed mileage and performance. People please dont go for the looks but check this beast and you will come to know about it. Bajaj has designed this bike keeping in mind of every expectation of an Indian need. May be in future the bike might role out slight modification. It is not only for rural or Urban but also for cities. Hats Off to Bajaj.
