Is This The Updated Karizma ZMR? Yep! [Video Update]

You read it first on MotorBeam. The cat is out of the bag, or so it seems. We all know Hero MotoCorp will launch updated versions of the Karizma and ZMR later this year. The company confirmed the Karizma’s engine will get more power, courtesy of its partner, Erik Buell Racing. Although there is no confirmation on whether the new Hero Karizma will get an all new engine, we feel EBR has tweaked the current 223cc motor to produce higher output. The spyshots of the new Hero Karizma ZMR which recently flooded the world wide web did show minor cosmetic changes but now the bike seems to be uncovered.

MotorBeam reader Karun Prakash mailed us the above picture which was carried in Sakshi newspaper earlier today (it is a Telugu news daily). In the picture, we can see Pawan Munjal, MD and CEO, Hero MotoCorp sitting on a Karizma ZMR motorcycle. We don’t know when this picture was snapped but what interests us is the Karizma ZMR which doesn’t look like the current one. If we relate some of the styling elements with the spied bike, we can easily make out this is indeed the real deal. Undoubtedly, the above picture shows it’s the good old ZMR underneath as many design elements are identical.

So what all is different? There is a new headlight, which seems to be inspired from erstwhile partner Honda’ old Fireblade. The paint scheme is a bit different with ZMR written in a new pattern. The seat is now split, very similar to the Xtreme and the riding position seems a bit sportier rather than being upright as seen on the current ZMR. The twin-shocks remain which is a disappointment as even 125cc bikes are now coming with a monoshock. The rear tyre is a wider (110 mm vs 100 mm).

The wheels, brake discs, exhaust, tank and instrument cluster are untouched on the 2014 Hero Karizma ZMR but the fairing seems to gel better with the bike and doesn’t look as abrupt as the current model (see the pics in this post for a comparison). These changes don’t seem enough to win back the demand enjoyed by the Karizma more than 5 years back but we feel this is a stop-gap measure till Hero MotoCorp gets ready with an all new 250cc motorcycle. With slight tweak in the powertrain, expect the ZMR to produce around 20 BHP of power, with prices likely to remain largely the same.

Update 1- Another picture has surfaced which our reader Yasar Lakhani has shared with us. The picture shows the Karizma to have projector type headlights (but they don’t seem to be projectors), very Pulsar 220 like. The bike also gets daytime running lights, a segment first but the design doesn’t seem to be well executed. The two pictures (the one above and below) are of the same motorcycle which means the ZMR gets uglier.

Update 2 - A video from the unveil of the 2014 Hero Karizma ZMR has surfaced on YouTube. In the video, we can see in typical Hero fashion, the bike looks way more appealing than it actually is. The advertisement agency has put in some fire to make the new ZMR look action packed. The cluster is retained and the headlights and daytime running lights can be seen in action. Thanks to Prasad Rane for the heads-up on the video.

      Once thought that Hero’s design team has hit rock bottom with 2009 Katizma ZMR and they have now proved me wrong by hitting another rock bottom.
      how much will they spoil the legendary 2005 model…

    Looks good. But the puny 20bhp, skinny tires and the twin suspension rear is the spoiler. This is like a cow wearing a tiger skin. Looks like a 1000+ cc superbike…look closely it is actually a moped. I cant imagine how funny we Indians will look in the eyes of harleys and ducatis and hondas. Nevertheless Indian hero boys will buy this to impress their girls.

      Mr. Prasad Hero makes fuel efficient and long lasting bikes not like the pulsars which runs only for a year. Great engineers have designed this model so they have much more knowledge than you. And you belong to those category of people who goes to a harley showroon but buys a bajaj platina, so don’t shout much.

        Who told you that Pulsar last for a year. I have a pulsar which is 8 year old which clocked 80000kms without any trouble what so ever. Pulsar is the brand which kicked off HERO CBZ from the market. If CBZ was so good product , then why did it failed in the competition. Prasad is 100% right on his comments. You Hero bacchas should stop shouting and stop behaving like 100cc kids.

        Pulsar not running for a year is a decade year old joke now, it far more refined then before people who care and have a bit common sense are servicing their pulsar on time they are lasting for more then 5 years easily.

        coming back to design, its a bit of a disaster but Hero has done with EBR
        which is like jumping into unknown territory when it comes reliability and efficiency in every single way

        We will see what happens when it launches and how it fares in a road test

          bro i’m with u.pulsar is the only bike that has kept his name from last 10 years without compromising.not like splendor, if they r running for a year then why should 37 countries in the world like pulsar ???? and the big brands like ktm and kawasaki comes to bajaj not to hero.

            This is because of honda….i dont know why people fear to face the truth ..honda restricted the Munjals to export their bikes…they restricted hero to have their own R&D…but people think of hero as dumb….just think why are they number one in sales ….the fact is that the pulsar buyers envy their numero uno position

          I absolutely second you Mohit. I’ve been using the first lot of DTSi 180 UG1 they call, bit tuned and Oil cooled which is working fine at this moment. Fingers Crossed :D.

          No issues at all till date, almost in the tenth year without much hassles. Timely toil up is what required.

          Yes I agree with you. Infact, today only I rode my Jijaji’s 7 year old P150 which has run for thousands of Kms as you can guess.. and yet that not so well maintained bike had a very impressive pull, low end torque & enough power to impress me, a P200NS owner. Shows alot about Bajaj Pulsars and their reliability.

        pulsar rocks idiot!…I have a 2009 ug 4 p180..& still is rocksolid…more importantly its faster than zmr…it weighs lesser by 5kgs than zmr & pumps out same power as the zmr (17.02 ps)…despite being just 180 cc!

      Agree with you dude, only the road side heroes who watch superbikes in movies but don’t which is which. they think that all that superbikes have got is a fairing. don’t bother about technical aspects like specs, chassis, engine, etc, will buy this bike.

    i owned a one n half year old pulsar 180 clocked 23 k + km.. n i am very much satisfied with m bike.. u sounds like a pity hero fan amit.. grow up.. things have been changed a lot.. we all know that hero motor corp is struggling with their current line up..

      Yes I am a fan of Hero and that too a hard-core hero…..I am not saying that I am against pulsar…but in these recent years I have changed 2 pulsars due to engine and sound issue. Now I am happy with my cbz and karizma. They are simply awesome.

    relax guys let it release….karizma R launched decade ago can do 0-60 in 3.8 seconds weighs 149 kgs and top speed of 125…while newly launched ultra tech pulsar 200ns can do 0-60 in 3.6 seconds weighs and top speed of 136..both bikes have same torques 18.35…pulsar 200ns driver suffers windblast and vibes yet it be proven product and the use of 3 spark plugs is real innovation then why the heel that KTM is not using it???? am not against bajaj or hero…

      Karizma R doing a 3.8 sec run to 60!! is just the manufacturers claim.. never proven otherwise…

      Pulsar 200NS or any naked bike will suffer from wind blasts.. there is nothing to be ashamed about it! Vibes on Pulsar is lesser than Karizma or only as good or as bad…

        It’s hard for me to comprehend the ignorance of people like you claim the 3 spark plug in 200NS to be just a gimmick. While you don’t know shit about the bike. Do you know one ? 200NS. I do, don’t talk about a bike that you don’t personally own, & hardly know anything about.
        The well setup 3 spark plugs actually do help in better combustion, better FE while providing insane power band with a limiter of 10800 RPM, and hence extremely lower emissions. Thus the actual Cat Con found in 200NS’ underbelly silencer is smaller compared to something like P220, hence costs lesser as well. Take one of the 3 spark plugs off and you’ll notice the bike struggle and act weird.

            I didn’t say the 3 spark plugs help the bike rev upto 10800,RPM, i meant the bike has an insane top end and yet even under hard ripping, the bike manages to give a FE of over 40kmpl. An FZ16 gives lesser FE, so does the mighty aged P220 and the Duke ofc. Nothing matches the performance and pocket friendly Fuel efficiency of 200NS.
            I have an advice for you expert, please take one of the spark plugs out from your NS as according to you, one doesn’t need it.Simple.

      karizma never did 0-60 in 3.8 secs…its just manufacturers claim…real world 0-60 & 0-100 is 4.8 sec & 14 secs respectively….which is even marginally slower than pulsar 180 (4.7 & 13.5) & rtr 180(4.5 & 13.2)!

      200NS and Duke do not share the entire engine, only the lower part, that’s the gearbox. upper engine, bore and stroke of measurements exactly same as Duke (72×49) are developed seperately for 200NS including everything else.
      Duke200 exists because Bajaj, holder of 47% share of KTM, brought it in India. 200NS exists because of the terrific Bajaj R&D team and no matter what anyone says, it’s not a copy of Duke200. It’s got it’s own character and uses.
      on the topic here, this new Karizma looks abit ugly, but Im sure this is a very practical and fun to ride motorcycle. I respect the work of developers and you should as well, instead of being a a fag Hero fanboy.

        They may not share the engines wholly…but you have to accept the fact that both Hero and Bajaj dont have much of their own in terms of tech…they took help from…not actually help…they acquired ktm partially and now use it as an R&D center…for both hero and bajaj dont have a very big R&D facility.So, my point is just relax and let the bike be launched(well actually u cant stop that)…dont like it-dont buy it-dont notice it-ignore it
        Personally-I dont like the P220 looks wise but tech wise pulsar is far better than karizmas
        AND also see the fact that karizma is a 2001 model..first 223cc in india…pulsar was there but it was 150cc…so chillax and appreciate the DRLs..Dual lamps…radiators on the fairing
        one more thing..the new karizma is a copy of…well see http://www.ebr.com

      Back then.. they were the performance benchmarks.. now they are no where near.. However the newer bigger Pulsar 375 is on the way.. and probably could have an earlier launch than Karizma..

    @Amith. Hero baccha, Shut your mouth. I am not a fan of Pulsar or Hero Karizma. But learn to make comments on the website rather shouting like a immature Hero kid. Whatever they do with new Karizma, it will be a big failure. It can never match the Pulsar 200NS or KTM duke 200 in any of the matter. Dont behave like a stupid . Does Karizma look like a full faired performance bike like R15 or CBR 150?. it looks like a donkey with monkey cap. Hero is a Hero for 100cc bikes but its a dream to become Hero for performance bikes.

    New zmr is disgrace to whole indian automobile industry. …..if u cant make it just give up the premium segment…..now my brother trolls me by saying that u got hero showroom near ur college so get new zmr…coz u cant buy duke from bajaj showroom. ….I was killing myself to think away from duke as no ktm showroom is in dhule….but zmr is saying me hang urself…..I wont say I m disappointed coz I dint expect any wonder from hero…what a crap….I would use this bike with a customised black cloth cover to hide what I m riding on….pls let me noe the dimensions so I can order for the cloth for stitching right away.

    Yamaha rx135 and Suzuki shogun 125 easily overtakes pulsar 150. I have seen many drags in my area. even I have overtaken pulsar 150 with my friend’s highly tuned Suzuki swish 125 with kn filter and free flow exhaust in a 0-80kmph drag.

    Mr amit if slow and steady wins the race then buy a cycle rather than buying a bike cycle is more durable and no mileage problem no maintenance trouble. Although I am not a pulsar fan boy .A pulsar 200ns can beat this new karizma. I agree with Mr ayush. The fairing alone doesnt make a bike premium. the fairing doesn’t look good and the rest of the bike looks similar to it previous model.

    Man. I really have no words to describe the design of new zmr. It is ridiculous. The previous zig-zag zmr fairing was funny, but this is even worse. The front cowl is too tall.

    Seriously, does hero really pay its engineers to design something like this? School kids would design a better looking bike for free. Local mechanics can do a much better design than this.

    ugly design but it goanna be a blockbuster like it’s predecessor. I have 15 year old CBZ working perfectly till date ( from that time even pulsar didn’t born) . Hero is always a hero in sales and always be. it’s a numero uno company, today even I realized it as our dear rivals are also talking about us.

    I dnt knw y these people blindly hate the new zmr…they havnt even ride one, nd wit this bullshit peace of pic they are assuming that the product will be a failure…nevr judge anythin jst by seeing the exterior beauty..karizmas are always known for their cruising abilities nd not for the sudden power delivery…people always consider it as a tourer,not a track vehicle….the main stuffs that are necessary for a tourer are big engine coules which helps ur legs from getting exposed to engine heat,then a big fairing to control the blowing wind during high speed highway cruising,good back support,big fuel tank,a good instrument cluster with mileage indicator,a good split handle bars,good projector head lights for night riding,good suspension that works in every kind of road etc…so hero designers might hav desinged zmr with these things in mind…jst think about the quality of workers in a big cmpny like hero…jst dnt ignore their efforts in providing good quality products to indians simply…jst compare the bikes design with one of the best tourers in the country the ninja 650…both of them looks like exact tourers,though i m dissappointed with zmrs twin shock…tourers are for those who see biking seriously nd luv to travel nd not like kids who play with 220s in streets..they are more matured…i still thnk karizma is one of the best affordable tourers in the country atleast to a common man llike me……hpy to see indian cmpnies like hero,bajaj nd tvs doing good…..

    Hahahahahahaaaaa hahahaaa …ha….GObi lag raha hai……i own pulsar 220 dtsi…….design of pulsar 220 f is completely out dated……….am telling the truth…i doesnt like my pulsar 220 design now…….honda cbr 250 and 150 they look good……..KTM duke got realy good design…..but its a naked bike………ktm duke 390 is roket for just 180000……….yamaha..got best design…………and yamaha r25 got the best design……….its good the team designs the machine according…..to its performance………..am waiting for pulsar 375….hope it will look good…….because……they seen ktm design….they….know….if people are spending over 100000 they doesnt want……..1947 design bike………….     Thanks for the nice Preview on the ZMR.
    I owned a Pulsar 180 till date and have bought the ZMR today for a whooping amount.
    I did check with the showroom as to when the 2013 ZMR ( the pics that you have posted here!!) would be coming to the Market? and they told me it would be coming in 2014 only.
    As I see the Pics , I guess Hero have lost it somewhere in desperation in trying to make a confused version of the Pulsar 220 and the Duke.

    The end result is a ridiculous design, that would bury Karizma’s legacy once for all.
    I actually would have gone for a Pulsar 220 for it’s good value for money, but since my previous one was a Pulsar… I had to go for the Karizma ZMR (the 2009 Model) and which has burnt my pocket.

    I am reasonably satisfied with the Purchase of the ZMR which is to be delivered in 2 days time to me.
    The only right decision i made seems to be getting the last of the ZMR’s for this year before they release this ugly piece of crap!!

    The Munjal’s don’t seem to be good mind readers and seem to be getting it wrong most of the times and the only respectable bike from their stable is the Hunk.

    Now here is what I think… its ugly but…. then again the front windshield is high…good for touring…. it has split sets and all… lighting wil b better due to the projectors. I just dont know y de had to make it soo ugly… hero seriously needs a new design team. Its functional allright but wers da good looks? Engine is still the same wtf… my cousin made a 2007 karizma pump out more bhp with a bigger bore a bigger exhaust a bigger carb and reworked head and changed gearing etc,,.. y cant a company wrk towards this?
    For a zmr a reworked ecu shud b enough to boost a few bhps

    i il ride 300kms mostly pulsar bikes engine noise is very poor , they sounds like vaulves ,proplem! And pulsar cnt performs on hills road , they decrease her engine power, ßud karizma no chance, i il ride just 120 km speed engine is very silent,, ride like a ship , its awesome machine mostly comfrt for tour … and hills climbing.

    Ya itz true d 2014 ZMR looks ugly bt the loss which hero wll suffer a lot frm 2014 ZMR their place wll be fullfill by d nw upcmng HERO HX250R nd HASTUR620. Although Hastur is a street fightr it wll definately rock d streetz. As i thnk d crrnt zmr mdl wll gt clsd by launchng ugly 2014 ZMR xo i buy a 2013 maroon clr ZMR nd i m vry hppy wth it. It has really got a buttery smooth engine. As i hve drivn 220F aftr reachng 128-130km/hr it mkes more nd mre vibrations by whch d rdr loose itz cntrl frm d byk.
