Updated Karizma ZMR Produces 20 BHP Of Power

Hero MotoCorp will launch the updated Karizma ZMR in the Indian market by the end of the year. The company has released an advert of their flagship motorcycle which clearly mentions the horsepower figure at the start. As we guessed earlier, the new Karizma ZMR is indeed producing 20 BHP of power, which puts it bang in Pulsar 220 territory. The torque from the EBR tweaked motor is 19.7 Nm. So in all, the Karizma ZMR’s 223cc powerplant gets an increase of 2.4 BHP and 1.35 Nm. The claimed 0-60 km/hr time is 3.6 seconds.

While the Karizma ZMR doesn’t compete with the Pulsar 220, it is likely to be compared with the Pulsar 200 NS due to the pricing of both these machines. The Pulsar 220 will be compared with the Karizma R which too has got a power bump. While the Pulsars are naked and semi-faired bikes using carburettors, the Karizma ZMR is a full faired machine with fuel injection. However the Pulsar’s fan following is insurmountable and with a new Pulsar 180 NS around the corner, the updated Karizmas won’t have it easy.

Hero MotoCorp has made comprehensive changes to the Karizma R and ZMR, with both bikes getting front and rear design similar to the EBR 1190. We hear that Erik Buell Racing was responsible for the updated Karizma and the styling tweaks were also done by them. Hero and EBR are working on an all new 250cc bike which is likely to debut at the 2014 Auto Expo. Meanwhile checkout the new ZMR’s TVC. Hero’s ad agency has overdone the advert which although does a good job in highlighting the features of the ZMR but also showcases the machine as if it’s a litre class superbike, doing wheelies and stoppies with flames running all around!

    despite having more price …its still behind p220…p220 produces 21 bhp against zmr’s…and if p180ns is around the corner…then surely there will be an update to the 220 as well…& again the gap between power of zmr and p220 will be more! with this designing and power…hero can’t even kiss the dust of pulsars!

We need a perfect journalist and enthusiasts to guide. So before criticizing it’s (zmr) design. See the complaints and problems were faced by your favorite pulsar customers..

        Abhi what makes you think I am a Pulsar fan? I am not, I am neutral and see posts where we have heavily criticised Bajaj for not responding to customers complaints and using sub standard parts. We stand for the truth.

        there are two face book fan pages …bajaj pulsar (10 lakh fans) & hero honda hunk ultimate performance tips(3000 fans)…check both these pages on facebook…on hunk fan page there are almost 5 complaints per day..regarding problems in the hunk by the owners…and check the pulsar fan page u will find that there is just one complaint per week …that explains which company bikes are more reliable…! lolz! & what quality? haven’t u heard about numerous problems like engine overheating of previous zmrs ??? there are many dude…& if pulsars were unreliable they wouldn’t have been the no.1 (47 % market share) for past 13 years!!

          @tejas Even i can also give the fake statsblike u… But everyone knows about bajaj’s quality. Even paint quality of bajaj is crap (cost cutting lol)… . Tvs, Hero and Yamaha offers good paint quality. And the resale value of pulsars are less comparred to heros… I’m not a fan of hero nor hater of pulser. But i hate the people like you, misguiding and always banging the drums saying pulsar is great. Go die with your pulsar u moron.

          y to c fb pages for complaints. Every bike in world has a problem! but bajaj is ultimate father of problems. you just go to Bajaj service center n stand for 30min u ll here more harsh thing that u nerver heard anywhere. Bajaj produces powerful bikes i Agree compare to hero, but people prefer reliable bike then power. Even i own a hyosung gt250r n I no wat problems it has.

            @Abhi- Dude, firstly, grow up! why are you abusing others for supporting pulsar? that itself shows u r a pulsar hater… and moreover if tejas and faisal are supporting pulsar, its because its a better vehicle than karizma and not because they are biased. Compae the designs of pulsar and karizma.. the pulsars are so scientifically made.. see the perimeter frame or the weight distribution..its spot on! its faster than karizma, its better handler than karizma..what more do u want? i agree karizma is more reliable than pulsar but when you pay 1 lakh, reliability is not ur main priority. If it is, u may better buy the new passion pro.. u can ride it for 10 years without hassles
            @Rival= Are u sure u prefer reliability to power? If that was the case, u would not prefer hyosung over CBR or NINJA boss!! Think again

    I am seeing a lot of debate here between the Pulsar fans and the Karizma fans. I’l just give my opinions on both in an unbiased manner.
    The PULSARs :
    1. They are more powerful and faster than the KARIZMAs.
    2. They are technologically more advanced than the KARIZMAs (triple spark, mono shock etc) but the trend seems to be changing.
    3. Their affiliations with Kawasaki and KTM seem to be doing them a world of good.
    4. The NS was a game changer for the PULSARs and the 375 is being waited for, by all Pulsar fans.
    5. Bajaj is offering more bang for buck in terms of performance and power and it seems their business plan is flourishing.

    The KARIZMAs:
    1. They aren’t as powerful or as fast as the PULSAR’s but they are way more reliable than them. The reliability of the Hero brand along with its wide network, helps to provide better after sale services for the buyer.
    2. Although the Bajaj bikes have the edge in technology, the Karizma ZMR offers fuel injection which IMO is a must in all performance bikes.
    3. Parting ways with Honda seems to have hurt Hero and their venture with EBR doesn’t look very bright considering the design inputs on the new ZMR were provided by them.
    4. Except for the Karizmas, Hero don’t have much to offer in terms of performance bikes but if the rumors about a new 250 cc ZMR are true, then the landscape could very well change. After all, all it takes is 1 bike.
    5. The Karizma owners may not get as much bang for their bucks in terms of performance as compared to the Pulsars but Hero makes it up by providing better quality equipment and bikes with better ergonomics. This gives the Karizma owners the joy of having a sports-like-bike with touring abilities along with better comfort. Also, the Karizmas have slightly better mileage and are slightly better for city use.
    All in all, I like both the brands and hope all people buy the bikes these brands offer as they are Indian.

    P.S : I will admit I am kinda biased towards the Heros as I own one ;)

      ur almost 80 % correct …but regarding reliability…believe me i have 2003 pulsar 180 & it still going great after doing 1 lakh kms! reliability of a bike depends upon the handling by the owner..

      I had P220(new buy) and a pre owned zma R which had completed 3.5yrs and 40k when bought. Would say P220 gives great adrenaline rush,but sadly for few months and I started feeling power detereorating with age..Zma on the other hand was consistent and in slightly curved roads will outsmart Pulsar. Zma is an inspiring machine as it has got better…far better dynamics..Speed without control is a waste.

      there is always axial and shear stress acting on the pistons and camshasts. these need to have quality…so all in all hero will run the same with slight decrease in power but pulsar (if maintained properly)will run for years but will have a more power decrease…it has to be…no machine is perfect..only that the karizmas are more refined they survive in the long term

    Again a spoil sport by hero. I thought of power output of 22bhp. Now the only option is reducing the weight to the maximum. But for sure it will accelerate quicker than both pulsars 200ns and 220. Now pulsar fans will be happy as they have no one to contend against the pulsars.

        Its not 0-60 or 0-100 on a std test conditions that tells the actual story. Availability of torque in eah gear and roll on acceleration have more impact on the real world driveability. For eg. We can never be in 5th gear in 35kmph in P220,but in Zma not only can we be in 5th in that speed but it pulls cleanly from that speed without down shifting. And gear shift quality,especially when down shifting,on zma is light years ahead of 220. And vehicle stability upon hard braking is much higher on zma.

          dude i never said anything about 0-60 or 0-100 acceleration…dont know about p220 …but by p180 pulls cleanly from 29kmph in 5th gear..regarding downshifting & breaking m satisfied wid my p180′s abilities..

        What the ass did Pulsar 200NS ignited the enthusiatic by boasting 23.5PS of power. I doent see single of them on road. May be beacuse it looks more or less same as Pulsar 135 :D i rode new pulsar and i am veru sorry to say that existing pulsars are much better. You can feel the power of Exuastec in existing pulsar as you can drive even at the speed of 15kmph at 5th gear without knocking or engine stalling. Just do that on Pulsar 200NS. Engine will get off….

            23.5Ps of power in 200NS is produced at 9500rpm and not at some 1000rpm when your in 15km/hr!!

            People just get carried away by the power figures to have their own judgement..

            Having a max figure is just 1 parameter amongst various other factors in a bike.. The media also fails to understand it..

            How many of you bike owners ride your bike where it produces max power? How many bikes are smooth and willing to rev to the max power rev range!!? What is the torque characteristic of a bike while going all the way in its useable rev range starting from 2000 rpm to its max revs!!? How much power mentioned on the paper is actually in real produced by the bike in the crank and how much of that power is lost in friction while getting delivered to the rear tyre!!?

            Just keep dreaming about max power and power to weight!!
            2 of the media hyped parameters which are completely misguiding..

    The power bump to 20bhp might give the ZMR a top whack about 133km/hr.. which puts it on par with Pulsar200NS, Duke200, Pulsar220, CBR150R and R15.. not bad.. with good ergonomics and a half fairing in the front.. it could be the best highway machine amongst all of the above..

      Totaly agree with u pravin.. The karizmas are known for being super comfortable for long rides when compared to their competition and seeing the big seats, i reckon even these bikes will live up to their reputation! its will be one of the best bikes in terms of comfort! the rear part of the bike is a big let down. does not gel well with the rest of the bike

    In my opinion Hero is doing much better than expected either be in terms of design or in technical prowess and the same have been demonstrated with an approach of can do ability. May with numerous tieups or do with the hell ….after all it matters what the company sells and benefit to customers. We all thought that once Honda parted away from hero, hero will not be able to survive. There were many detractors who questioned the ability of hero as an individual. The brand hero itself was so annoying that use to associate with cycle brand. Just within two years of joint venture termination, Hero has already rebranded from Hero Honda to Hero without any significant loose in market share that too without any new products and in negative market sentiments with fierce competition. The biggest loser in market share is the bajaj auto whose market share has fallen down at the cost of Hondas gain. I belive Hero as a brand is much stronger than use too 2 years before…and thats true…after all it continues to be undisputed market leaders with wider margin and now with all New Products and platform coming out….If wont be easy to beat Hero !

      There are various ways to look into the sales figures of Hero and Bajaj… True Hero is clocking the same sales that it used to do..

      If Im right.. Hero Moto Corp’s 80% of sales is from 1 bike namely Splendor…. 15% of the remaining 20 is Passion.. The rest of the whole some 20 bikes rake in some 5% sales..

      Bajaj sells consistently throughout its range.. Starting from the 100s to Pulsar200NS… Except for Pulsar180..

      Its not just total numbers that reflects on the profit and revenue in the balance sheet…

      The profit margin for selling a 100cc bike like Splendor could be much lesser than bigger bikes like Pulsar series..

      Therefore there are a combination of various factors that have to be considered instead of just passing a statement that BAJAJ is not doing good..

    whenever there’s a debate between hero and bajaj all I can hear from hero fans is about reliability..is there anything else you can brag about?
    what bajaj has offered to Indian bikers is far more greater than what hero has done..its not even worth comparing.
    splendor,old karizma,old cbz are the only bikes from hero I still respect.I do admit that in terms of reliability bajaj may lag behind a bit but look at what hero is doing now a days… they are making a fool out of themselves by designing such pathetic machines….and when people start complaining they start talking about reliability!!!

          Abhinav, TVS tie-up with BMW is very recent. TVS has, according to me has one of the strongest R&D setup. When Flame run into patent trouble with dual spark plugs, TVS being very innovative created the same effect with a single spark plug. That single spark plug fired twice over nano seconds to get the same end result. They are the first folks to give ABS in under 1 lakh bike. Their engines are strong and parts are durable.
          Bajaj also had Kawasaki by its side for technology although they were quick to come with Pulsar on their own and have ever since improved it over past decade.

Bajaj is doing soo because bajaj can easily fool people like you and keep on selling craps. Bajaj just keep on boasting about technology so that it could get some edge over Japanese rival…why ktm and kawasaki does not have 3 spark plugs? I was quite satisfied with bajaj when it launched 2 spark plugs…but now with 3…..it is the height of bullshit. First they are thrown out in scooters….now very soon in bikes….better keep making autoriksha…thats good for bajaj :D

Moreover, the design of the pulsar ns was so impressive that the designer of the bike got an offer from BMW motorrad. Atleast now, i feel u would have an idea of the magnitude of their efforts,research and excellence and appreciate it.

    Hey brothers I read all the comments and seems there is a fight… well the zmr doesn’t look so attractive as a 220 I know taste depends on people still lets see it in the showrooms then we can decide… and I ride a pulsar 150 for three years now its quite good just maintained it properly and it works good… since u guys know so much about bikes I wanted to ask something I want to buy a bike next year within jan budget is quite low a lakh so can u guys kindly suggest…. which one would be best… HELPPPPP :-)

        @Fais: In my personal opionion, a general commuter/tourer bike has to have a kick. Think being stranded somewhere when you know you can still start the bike not by pushing it, which might look embarrassing. But to kick start it instead. I would always prefer a kick on these low duty single cylinder bikes. So it is important and so did Yamaha thought of it and implemented it, my pulsar 180 has it and i laugh at people who aint able to fire their bikes only because the battery has gone kaput.

        As i use honda activa i am used to self start, very rarely kick is used. So i think karizma zmr is good for me and also it has pgm-fi engine. What do you Say FAISAL and what about PGM-FI engine is it good in terms of maintenance cost.

      R15 is a good choice for you. CBR250R has lesser mileage but more power.

    Guys bajaj offers shit loads of technology but no use. They never perform as specified.. And for all ,twinspark is enough to burn up the fuel efficiently no need of triplespark more of a showoff technology to fool everyone, bajaj pls make bikes with minimum quality ..is the power margin so apart between 17.8bhp zmr and 21bhp p220 , moreover same ,they said p220 well balanced, really??? stop kidding! Bajaj lovers open ur mouths after checking out the details of HX250R .. And lastly make ur analysis between p150 and cbz xtreme ..bajaj never offer Ride quality and they make seating positions which only looks stylish but not comfortable.. The debate is like comparing maruthi and tata cars

    Hey Faisal need your help. I am in dilemma to buy zmr or cbr 150. I like zmr because it has good performance but in new version they spoiled the stylish look. Which one is better in all ways like stylish performance etc…
