KTM 390 Duke To Be Offered With ABS

KTM 390 Duke Wallpaper

One of the most anticipated bikes of the year is the KTM Duke 390, which is expected to be launched in India by June this year. The Duke 390 is Duke 200’s sportier sibling which offers stronger performance. The Duke 390 is powered by a single-cylinder, 4-stroke, liquid-cooled 373cc engine that is capable of producing 44 HP of maximum power and 35 Nm of peak torque, mated to a 6-speed gearbox. Significant increase in power output of the Duke 390 over the Duke 200 means that ABS (Anti-lock Braking System) should be a safety feature on offer by the manufacturer.

KTM will be offering the Duke 390 with Bosch’s 9M ABS mechanism featuring sensors at the front and rear wheels that will be connected to an independent ECU for the ABS and will also monitor engine torque to optimize braking. The bike is also expected to offer riders an option of switching off the ABS system when needed. The Duke 390 shares similar hardware with the Duke 200, featuring 110 mm section front and 150 mm section rear tyres with 300 mm front and 230 mm rear disc brakes. However the 390 Duke features a 4-piston caliper instead of the 2-piston caliper found on the Duke 200.

The Duke 390 is currently being locally produced at Bajaj Auto’s Chakan plant. With heavy localization of the Duke 390, we expect KTM to launch the streetbike with an aggressive pricing of around Rs. 2.3 – 2.5 lakhs. The suspension setup consists of upside down front forks and a monoshock rear suspension. The Duke 390 is expected to have class leading driving dynamics with a power to weight ratio of staggering 290 BHP per tonne. Bajaj Auto is also considering launching the Pulsar 375 in early 2014, which will be sharing some elements with the Duke 390.

    Drool-worthy for sure. Would like to have one, but then I have to give up my Duke 200 . Come to think of it Duke 390 with ABS will be Duke 200 and then some and that’s a winning combination. Count me in as a prospective buyer.

      Mohan, drool worth as in specs wise? or looks wise?

      • Mohan

        Faisal, I meant droolworthy spec-wise. Lookwise 390 is same as the 200 I understand and I can live with that, matter of fact I already do.

          Mohan, yes specs wise its crazy, but we need twin-cylinder bikes from KTM too.

          • Mohan

            Faisal, yes twin cylinder would have been nice but then check out the following specs for
            parallel twin cylinder Honda CBR500R :-

            ‘Here are the Technical Specifications of Honda CBR500R:
            – 470cc liquid-cooled, parallel-twin
            – Six-speed manual
            – 46.9bhp (Duke as you know puts out 44 Bhp not much of a difference there, right)
            – 30lb/ft of torque
            - 401lbs (dry)/430lbs (wet)- ie 182 kg (dry)/191 Kg (wet)- Faisal see the difference in weight between Honda and the Duke (Duke runs 139 kg dry and 150 kg wet I take it, amazing don’t you think?
            - 105mph top speed (Faisal that is 168.98 Kmph where as Duke 390′s top speed is said to be 170 kmph or 105.633mph or to round it off 106 mph. As you can see Duke 390 is a bit ahead of Honda CBR500R when it comes to top speed, if only by 00.633/mph)
            – 31-inch seat height (Duke 390′s seat height is a bit less thus accomodating people of shorter height, nice if you ask me)
            - 120/70-17 (front)/160-60-17 (rear)

            Faisal, also consider the weight difference, Duke weighs a lot less than the Honda 500 twin cylinder job and could even out-run Honda CBR500R if one is capable rider- don’t look at me, I am nothing but ha ha ha. So what is the point of having a twin cylinder I wonder ! Any thoughts on this?

    What will be the new price of KTM ABs?? putting ABS on bike is cheap as compare to the company is giving……. I guess

    • Akash

      @baljinder bike with ABS will cost around Rs 15,000-30,000 more . . . .

  • Mony

    Duke 390 is 316.55ps/ton not 290ps/ton. Its weight is 139kg not 150kg. 150kg is with full tank fuel……..

  • Akash

    @mony thats ok. But dude bike runs on fuel, u cant run with empty tank. Power to weight ratio is useful only when bike is running. Fuel is the integral part of any vehicle, u can’t neglect its weight :)

  • Baljinder

    @Akash, 15 to 30k more???
    if I buy ABS from shopdealer, it will cost around 10k max for Duke…….. then what the difference between bajaj Duke ABS and a market installed ABS on Duke?? Any differ in quality.?
