Scoop – Piaggio To Launch 250cc Bike In 2014

2012 Aprillia RS125 racing

Piaggio will be launching a 250cc bike in India in 2014. Our sources inform that the Italian giant is working on an Asia/India specific quarter-litre motorcycle. A 250cc from Piaggio? The speculations can be endless. Piaggio has a weapon in the arsenal called Aprilia. A company which creates highly successful bikes such as the litre class street bike, the Aprilla Tuono and the track focused and award winning Aprilla RSV4. For the 250cc though, it could be a bored up version of the already existing RS4 125 (two 125cc engines joint to make a V-twin). We have already seen the success of this method on the KTM Duke family where the engine of the mighty Duke 200 comes from the Duke 125. Piaggio could tap into the opportunity and get their cash registers ringing.

In the intrest of costs, Piaggio’s 250cc motorcycle could use a single-cylinder engine with 4-valves, fuel-injection and liquid-cooling pumping out 25-30 BHP of power. The chassis will be a perimeter frame which is familiar to Indian biking scene, as it was first seen on the Yamaha YZF-R15 and later on the Honda CBR range and Bajaj Pulsar 200 NS. Top of the line suspension bits such as USD forks at the front and a fully adjustable monoshock at the rear are expected. No doubt this chassis is a favorite pick for manufacturers, as enthusiast already knows a bike with perimeter frame can deliver telepathic handling and steering characteristic.

We could also see a RS4 Replica (RS250), a version which is based on the the Iconic RSV4 litre class machine. This motorcycle receives track focused hardware such as bigger brakes and revised aerodynamics and a liter class bike gadget, a quick shifter! Not to forget the RS4 gets a Red/Black (Italian Flag) paint scheme too.

All this varies on how Piaggio prices and positions the bike in this highly price sensitive and growing market. With their arch rivals taking the position already on top of the mountain. Tough times lie ahead for Piaggio or any other manufacturer who comes in this highly competitive segment. If they succeed then, let the good times roll. Rainbow skies are forming, it’s time the ever salivating Indian enthusiast chooses his favorite color.

i was expecting this bike since 2012 and its still gonna release in 2014. Piaggio lacks strategy honda, yamaha, even ktm made big bucks in entry level sports bike segment in india and Piaggio are hoping to start in 2014, even harley davidson understood importance of indian market and they are planning to launch new bikes. not every bike enthusiastic will buy this bike even if its superior in terms of specs because of its late launch because who already bought now entry level sports bike will not be interested to shell out again even if its the best brand. ktm moved very smartly

Piaggio will mostly enter with the Aprilla brand and give a 250cc bike and their entry will be as premium brand for a certain period of time, after which localization at every level will commence

    Hello. . . . . . CBR doesn’t have perimeter frame…. They have diamond type frame… Please remove that….

    • Mohit Soni

Hi Akash, we were talking about the CBR 150R and let me tell you a little secret that all manufacturers use different names despite its the same thing when it comes universal recognition
Yamaha calls the perimeter frame a “Delta box chassis” while Honda calls is its diamond frame/perimeter frame a “advanced diamond/twin spar frame” and Bajaj goes ahead and calls it a steel pressed frame its universally the same but with a nip and tuck here and there makes to mark patents sometimes and give it a different name

@valay,you are absouletely right.every 2 year indian bike market is getting bigger in engines. like first,we only have yzf r15 only with 150cc.and after 2 years these segment grows to 250cc and these year it will be segment of 350.and will go on and on.so yamaha, piaggio, suzuki hero.launch your big models now.if it will be late your importance will be lost.be like bajaj.

We agree with you on that Bhav

      we want more!!!

The underseat exhaust looks very attractive. And if launched, will be a ‘market-first’ in the Indian Market. I hope Piaggio launches a Moto Guzzi V350, Aprilia RS4 350 & Gilera GP350. Also I beg Ducati to bring in a Ducati baby mini 348 Panigale, a MV Agusta F350, and hopefully Bimota, Benelli etc.

      Hi Karikor,
Underseat exhaust look great and attract a lot of attention, but they dont aid in mass centralization thus handling and turn is not as crisp as should be, it doesn’t world of a difference but it does to a extent which is not done in this highly competitive market one of the key success for a car/bike is handling
Most likely wont make it on to the Indian/Asia specific bike which Piaggio is getting us
