TVS Wego Review

Bike tested: 2013 TVS Wego (Disc Brake)

Price OTR Pune: Rs. 52,770/-

TVS Motor is a company best known for making mopeds since the early 1990’s. It all started with the TVS Scooty, which has a low seat height, is light, zippy and fuel-efficient and is primarily aimed at women. TVS is also known for producing high quality and long lasting products and giving innovative products to the Indian market. With the shift in the market demand for scooters, after Honda came in with their mighty Activa. TVS later responded with the Wego, a unisex scooter with a value for money price tag. We take the TVS Wego for a quick spin to find out how good this product fares.

Styling – The TVS Wego has a smart and sharp design. Carved out body panels, use of slashes and beefed up panels on the side look great. The modern looking headlight, the teardrop design of the parking lights and turn indicator assembly and the sleek front fender add flare to the front. The protruding tail light and grab handle at the rear of the TVS Wego add distinctiveness to the package. The only sore point of the TVS Wego is that it does not look as big or substantial as its competitors, which happens to be the current trend.

Instrument Cluster and Switch Gear – The instrument cluster is simple. The speedo-meter and the fuel gauge have chrome ring inserts around them. With modern fonts, the meters do their job well and do not look boring and uninspiring like some other scooters. The solitary turn indicators are always welcome and there is a high beam indicator as well. Switch gear quality is good on the TVS Wego and the red colour for the self-start and yellow for the horn adds a bit of flare. The choke switch is where it belongs. Surprisingly, the hill descent clip on the left brake lever is missing on the TVS Wego.

Ergonomics – The TVS Wego has a comfortable seating position, upright and not so wide, perfect for pottering around the city. The seating position is different from other scooters and feels well connected and comfortable at the same time. The seat of the TVS Wego is extremely soft and comfortable and it provides a perfect balance for short trips and helps in long journeys too. The grab rail at the back for the pillion to hold is small and is made up of plastic rather then aluminium found in majority of the scooters. Motorcycle derived rear view mirrors are very easy to adjust and offer a good view of what is behind.

Performance and Gearbox – The TVS Wego is powered by a 109cc, 4-stroke, all aluminum, air-cooled engine that churns out 8 BHP of power at 7500 RPM and 8 Nm of torque at 5500 RPM. Engine is smooth and utterly refined. The engine sounds great at both low revs and high revs. Power delivery is peaky and the throttle responds quickly to your inputs. Low-end torque is satisfactory, but when the gearbox shifts after 40 km/hr, it is in the power band, which takes you all the way to 80 km/hr very quickly. Top speed is around 85 km/hr. This engine and gearbox setup is very similar to the Honda Aviator. We find this setup enjoyable because it gives the scooter fun to ride characteristics.

Riding Dynamics – The TVS Wego rides on 90 x 90 tyres, which are slapped on 12-inch wheels. The TVS Wego has excellent dynamics but the new entrant, the Yamaha Ray, now stands ahead, but by a slight margin. The chassis is stiff and the engine is a stressed member, it offers massive confidence when pushed into corners. The telescopic suspension has been well executed and the rake and trail is set up perfectly too. It gives an excellent blend of cornering ability, low turning radius and ride quality at the same time. The Wego leans very easily and so low that we found the main stand kissing the ground on various occasions. The Wego remains poised throughout corner and the rear is not soggy like most scooters, which inspires confidence to push the scooter even further.

Ride quality is excellent at the front and the back too. The 130 mm drum brakes at the rear and the disc brake at the front do a splendid job of slowing you down from higher speeds. Thanks to the compact dimensions and low kerb weight, it stops quickly. The brakes seems excessively powerful for the scooter though. Due to the short wheelbase, maneuvering in the city is a hassle free job. It is extremely nimble and agile in the city, cuts through city traffic in a blink of an eye. TVS patented body balance technology doesn’t let you down while making quick lane changes and doesn’t let you loose control while riding fast on bumpy roads. High speed stability and road holding capability is excellent and there is no wind-blast.

2013 TVS Wego Fuel Flap2013 TVS Wego Under Seat Storage

Miscellaneous – The ground clearance of 150 mm is sufficient and even with a pillion, it did not scrape its belly on big speed-breakers or while going fast on smaller ones. Rear view mirrors and side stand come as standard. The foot-board is quite narrow and does not allow many bags to be kept. But then, you can hang longer bags on the hook fixed above, a thing, which is conventionally seen below the seat on most scooters. Indeed a good thing, if you carry edible/fragile stuff and do not want the things to be kicked or tossed around. LED tail light is a segment first and a good move by TVS for enhancing safety on dark highway trips. Headlight throw is excellent and so is the illumination. The patented main stand works well, it is extremely easy to deploy the main stand with minimum effort, a unique feature in the TVS Wego.

Verdict – There is no doubt that the TVS Wego remains one of the few scooters for the enthusiasts in the market today. Like any other TVS product, the Wego has a smooth engine with good quality material all around. This scooter boasts of excellent fit and finish and now it comes with an optional disc brake. All this and an excellent ride and handling balance to sum up with the VFM price tag, makes it an exceptional choice for scooter enthusiasts.

What’s Cool

* Dynamics
* Value for money

* Below average grip from TVS tyres
* No space for full faced helmet

    TVS wego is the main competitor to Activa an Aviator in the current market because all other rivals are just copying the design of Active and Wego is the only one with new brand design. The only drawback is the small storage space and engine is not so refined as HET Activa.

      Abhijit, you can’t fit disc brakes in other colours. This is not combined brake, you have to brake individually front and rear. No idea about new features in Wego yet.

    I purchased WEGO one month back and driven 180 km. From day one it is not starting by push button. Some body advised me to give choke and first start by kick only… ok agreed. Now there is leakage in petrol from carburator and scotter not starting by push button and even by kick start. I kept on getting errtic start of scooter every time.
    Called in the TVS service center as scooter is not starting at all by any means. They asked 250 Rs pick up charges for taking the scooter. I complained that this is brand new scooter. But he reduced Rs 50/- only. I have no other choice.

    Dony buy this scooter and go far any other brand.

    Dear Friends;

    After lots of study & comparison with available option in scooter segment, finally booked TVS WEGO (White) on 27th Oct 2013 @ 56,000/- Inclusive of all accessories (mumbai) this is what i got Best rate after inquiring all showroom…!! all my friends & showroom executive was forcing me to go for HONDA ACTIVA by telling 1) its an successful running model 2) low maintenance 3) high resale value… but my personal experience after taking drive of WEGO, was the smooth buttery ride …that the only thing that makes me to go for WEGO..!!! I have choosen this option because I don’t want to go for the option which all are taking , & me & my wife will drive this so thinking for unisex option WEGO gives me more riding confidence ( this is my First Ever vehicle..) …!!!

    Hope TVS Fulfills my basic requirement of High mileage, low maintenance..!! & give confident riding experience..!!!

    Just shared my experience to all of you, hope someone here also like me & this information will help them to decide his vehicle..!!! have a great day to all… & after receiving my WEGO will update you with my experience with .!!!

      after 2 month of use…i m updating my reviews…
      1) my total km.till date is around 160 km so not a frequent user…but engine started some sound …i think it will be rectified after my 1st service..
      2) joy of riding wego is really good.. when i have taken a test drive that wego was smooth & noiseless engine but my wego gives some sound which makes me somewhat disappoint..
      3) halmet is fitted in storage box.
      4)what the operational manual stated is not seen prectically ie. start/lock switch is illuminated in dark but practically its NOT. …also the charging point under seat is also not present.
      5) how to check if my model is latest CTVi or not .because nowhere it is mentioned on my WEGO.

            rest gone throgh the latest version of wego which is very beautiful in terms of look & features also..!!!

            I recommend TVS WEGO who doen’t travel too long on daily basis..for a city ride its a great scooter..

    DONT BUY TVS WEGO

    Hi All,

    I will not say I am a proud owner of TVS Wego.

    In last two years that maintainence cost has gone above the bike cost.

    Secondly if you are in Mumbai you have very few options for TVS service centre.

    1.It has lost average with 1 year.( Even after doing regular service at the TVS Service Centre)

    2.It has regular problem with Battery( Gets Stop when you slow down and apply brakes)

    3.Not good for Office goeing people( Better ladies use it for there household purpose)

    4.Every three months handle imbalance problem even after changing genuine parts from TVS service centre.

    5.The bike will get more spoil in TVS Service centre than by itself or by yourself.

    6.The best option at Service centre they will tell you to do is Engine Flush with Chemicals which cost you 500 – 600 bucks.

    7.Best you can opt of mahindra duro

    DONT BUY TVS WEGO

    I want to buy a scooter to travel short distances nearby, including for grocery shopping . Moreover, I’m a sedate driver (do not intend to cross the limit of 50-55 kms per hour). Under these circumstances, please suggest if a disc brake should be considered a necessary component in a scooter. Someone told me that Jupiter may be available with a disc brake option, so should I wait for one, or book the current version?

        Scooters are actually made for city driving, where we hardly get clear roads to cross 50 Kms speed. So disc brake is not must have feature. Drum brakes does the job perfectly. Its always better to keep safe distance when you are driving behind any vehicle. Jupiter and wego, both are good scooters. I would select wego for body balance + digital console and I don’t mind spending 1.5k more for disc brake variant.

    Hay frnd
    My wego has run 8000 kms and is giving lots of prolems. I bought it in june 2012. At beginning it used to give top speed of 88. And the pickup and mileage was mor than the activa. But now the speedometer does not go over 75. And the pickup is like I m driving a 90cc scooter. I fitted a k&n air filter to it but its running even slower. Service center executives are very cruel. They say engine has to be opened and the scooter has be kept in the service center for 2 days. They say 3000 will be the cost or more than that. I m a student I dont have that much pocket money. Plz help me what should I do should I get it repair in the local garage.or what should I do should I change its spark plug or valve or what.plz help.thanx in advance

      Check the air filter, see if it’s working properly.

    Thanx for response. But when the air filter provided by the company was bein used..that time also my wego was running very linear. Pickup was very slow. My friend’s activa blew me off in a short drag race.then somone told me to fit a k&n air filter as it is said to increase horsepower. But after fitting the air filter the condition has worsen. Confused what to do

      Swap filter and see if you find any improvements.
