Piaggio unveiled the Vespa range for the second time at the 2012 Auto Expo. The Italian automaker had showcased the Vespa for the very first time at the 2011 Autocar Performance Show in Mumbai. Piaggio will be launching the Vespa in March 2012 and has started putting together a dealership network for the vintage scooter. The very first of these showrooms is Millennium Drive, which is located at Wakdewadi in Pune. This showroom was earlier a Mahindra 2-wheelers showroom and has Honda Motorcycle, Tata Motors showrooms in the same line. On the same road is Yamaha, Hero MotoCorp and TVS showrooms, while on the opposite side of the road there is a BMW Motorrad showroom, with a Jaguar Land Rover showroom coming up soon!
Coming the Piaggio Vespa, we inquired at the dealership about the launch of these scooters and were told that a formal launch will take place sometime in early March and the scooters are all set to reach the showroom in the first week. Prices will be announced at the same time and is expected to be around Rs. 60,000/-. Piaggio is positioning the Vespa as a lifestyle product and thus the showroom will initially sell only Vespa scooters. There will be no Aprilia superbikes on display at these showrooms.
The first Vespa scooter to be offered in India will be the Vespa LX125, which is an automatic scooter powered by a 125 cc, 4-stroke engine producing 10.7 BHP of power and 9.6 Nm of torque. The Vespa LX125 will be offered with a front disc brake. The scooter is being manufactured at Piaggio’s new facility in Baramati in Maharashtra and can churn out 1.5 lakh scooter per annum. Piaggio also showcased a range of Vespa branded accessories at the 2012 Auto Expo. These will be available at the dealerships as well and include helmets, caps, jackets, t-shirts, bags, jackets and watches. Will you buy a Vespa?
