The Yamaha FZ16 has been a highly awaited bike and is a very important bike for Yamaha. We thought reviewing the Yamaha FZ16 is as important as reviewing a new Maruti car, so we did not delay in getting our hands on the Yamaha FZ16.

yamaha fz16 r15 photo

To start off this bike has striking presence. The looks of this bike will be a major reason for its success. We all know that the Pulsar 150 isint as great a bike as its sales figure suggests, its engine is not as refined either compared to the Unicorn but it does sell and how! One of the main reasons for the Pulsar 150 to sell so well is, it looks the part and the FZ16 makes the Pulsar look like a bike from last generation. After looking at the FZ16, i can confidently say that the bike is Definitely Male.

fz16 headlamp photo

Just like the Yamaha R15, the FZ16 has been wind tunnel tested for better aerodynamics. The engine is air cooled and uses a carburetor. A FI version would have made this bike really more desirable but then Yamaha had to price it sanely too. However the bike does ride pretty well.

fz16 engine photo

There is good amount of low end grunt, something which is missing in the R15. Though power of 14PS doesn’t speak much, its the torque which is worth talking about. 13.6NM @ 6000 RPM means this bike pulls very well from any RPM. There is very good throttle response and the bike will nudge 120kmph which is the norm in the 150cc segment. Yamaha claim an unrealistic mileage of 50kmpl. Expect 40kmpl under normal riding conditions.

yamaha fz16 chain photo

The fat front forks, mono cross suspension and the fat tires ensures that the FZ16 rides very well. You hardly feel a bump and is thus suited for our roads, which are well poorly made. Although the bike looks all muscles, it handles pretty well. Change of direction is quick and the wide handle bars makes the riding position almost spot on. Braking is good and gear shifts are smooth but not as good as the R15, which is in another league.

yamaha fz16 instrument cluster photo

We really didn’t like the instrumentation on the FZ16. The tacho needle is small and makes it difficult to read. Otherwise too the instrument cluster is a wee bit small for our liking and for a bike which looks so big and butch, i really don’t know why Yamaha compromised on better instrumentation. The bike also has no kick start (ala Pulsar 220), similar fuel tank capacity as the R15 (12 liters) and weighs just 127 kgs (dry)

fz16 mono cross photo

To sum up the FZ16 is a fantastic machine, it is worth the money and is certainly our pick in the 150cc segment. However Yamaha could have made it better, all those fat tires and forks need a bigger engine, perhaps a FZ20 should be launched by Yamaha to quench the performance hunger in us.

Whats Kool thumb u photo

I installed the K&N filter in my FZ. After installation I washed my bike and when i tired to start it, the bike was dead. It was not starting. Later on I opened the seat cover to see any problem with the new air filter. It was sad to see that water entered through the opening of seat cover and drained the filter. since my filter was installed below the seat cover inside a open black box it was flooded with water. Finally I used a piece of cloth and wiped out the whole water and my bike became alive. Is there any solution for this or any problem with the air filter when it gets wet.

Imsong, both the mods will make a significant different. You can also up-jet for maximum performance increase.

    Hi fas
i bought P220 FI last year..it has worked exceedingly well for 16000+ Kms so far..recently it is having problem of starting..i got it checked with bajaj showroom in navi mumbai..it worked for 02 days and again the problem is back..Interestingly sometimes the bike will start very easily as if nothing has happened(mosly after a good run)…but sometimes (typically after the bike has been idle for a few hours such as morning or evening) it just wont start…i have to push start it.
The display shows air filter clogged warning…but this doesn’t seem to be the problem since I have ridden the Bike with similar warning in the past without any starting hassles.
Do you know of someone in mumbai who could resolve this problem…The bike has got a very complex electrical system; so I dont want it to be opened by just anyone.

Noufal, the FZ16 and FZ-S are very similar. No mileage does not drop to such low levels but it does drop to 35kmpl.

Guys FZ16 is best bike in 150 segemet.
    Far better than pulsar,cbz,hunk,apache.

Pulsar has got power wd mileage but after a year u have to heavily spend money foe engine.Engine life is not good and maintaince is proper issue wd this bike.
hard to shift gears in pulsar and apachee
For Apache mileage is good. pick up is good.
Again in long run engine life and service problem is there.apache has vibration problem .Service section of tvs is very bad.
Hero Honda has both hunk and cbz x good bikes .
Both have good mileage and pickup..cheaper than fz.Stylish wise lacks from fz.But ride comfort and sporty stylish look fz is far better .
Unicorn is also good. But spare parts of bike are expensive also.Cant stand infront of FZ.
You have to wait(long waiting) for a long to get unicorn.

Above all we cant compare Yamha(Japaneese tech..)wd pulsar or tvs..

So guys it is your personal view which bike do you want.
Go have test drive of all bikes.
    Also see your budget.

About me: i am proud owner of FZ16 from six months.
My bike i can say is wowwwwwwwww.
    Low maintaince.Pick up is gr8.
    Riding comfort is awsome.

Mileage i m gettin is 40-45 within city.

I can recommend this bike who dont want to cry for mileage.
If you are not worried about mileage go for FZ16…

    Proud owner Of FZ16

        Hi Shamin..
If you are planning for a bike ist see your budget.
Fz is one of the best bike in market but expensive
        I am getting mileage around 40 – 45kmpl.
LOOK wise no bike can compete.FZ
        Handling , low maintenance..is awesome.

As Yamha has launched new FZ so now you will get kick .Previous version didnt had this.
Mileage will also depend on your riding skill .

Dont go for bajaj pulsar as engine life is very bad with high maintenance .
Apache is good but it vibrates a lot..After sale service is very bad..

You have one more option if you need good mileage and low maintenance..
HONDA UNICORN..is also good bike..But look wise it lacks ..
