The Yamaha FZ16 has been a highly awaited bike and is a very important bike for Yamaha. We thought reviewing the Yamaha FZ16 is as important as reviewing a new Maruti car, so we did not delay in getting our hands on the Yamaha FZ16.

yamaha fz16 r15 photo

To start off this bike has striking presence. The looks of this bike will be a major reason for its success. We all know that the Pulsar 150 isint as great a bike as its sales figure suggests, its engine is not as refined either compared to the Unicorn but it does sell and how! One of the main reasons for the Pulsar 150 to sell so well is, it looks the part and the FZ16 makes the Pulsar look like a bike from last generation. After looking at the FZ16, i can confidently say that the bike is Definitely Male.

fz16 headlamp photo

Just like the Yamaha R15, the FZ16 has been wind tunnel tested for better aerodynamics. The engine is air cooled and uses a carburetor. A FI version would have made this bike really more desirable but then Yamaha had to price it sanely too. However the bike does ride pretty well.

fz16 engine photo

There is good amount of low end grunt, something which is missing in the R15. Though power of 14PS doesn’t speak much, its the torque which is worth talking about. 13.6NM @ 6000 RPM means this bike pulls very well from any RPM. There is very good throttle response and the bike will nudge 120kmph which is the norm in the 150cc segment. Yamaha claim an unrealistic mileage of 50kmpl. Expect 40kmpl under normal riding conditions.

yamaha fz16 chain photo

The fat front forks, mono cross suspension and the fat tires ensures that the FZ16 rides very well. You hardly feel a bump and is thus suited for our roads, which are well poorly made. Although the bike looks all muscles, it handles pretty well. Change of direction is quick and the wide handle bars makes the riding position almost spot on. Braking is good and gear shifts are smooth but not as good as the R15, which is in another league.

yamaha fz16 instrument cluster photo

We really didn’t like the instrumentation on the FZ16. The tacho needle is small and makes it difficult to read. Otherwise too the instrument cluster is a wee bit small for our liking and for a bike which looks so big and butch, i really don’t know why Yamaha compromised on better instrumentation. The bike also has no kick start (ala Pulsar 220), similar fuel tank capacity as the R15 (12 liters) and weighs just 127 kgs (dry)

fz16 mono cross photo

To sum up the FZ16 is a fantastic machine, it is worth the money and is certainly our pick in the 150cc segment. However Yamaha could have made it better, all those fat tires and forks need a bigger engine, perhaps a FZ20 should be launched by Yamaha to quench the performance hunger in us.

fas, my FZ has got more scratches in its silencer.. It looks very odd to see fas.. Is it possible to remove those scratches.. The service centre people told me to do a Tuf coat to avoid scratches in future but they also told me that the present scratches will not be removed.. Give me your suggestion fas..

Reply

fas July 20, 2009 at 10:37 pm

Aswath, scratches are possible to remove, you can polish the silencer or you can use scratch remover. How did the scratches happen?

Reply

aswath July 21, 2009 at 10:14 am

fas, while taking the bike out of my house the silencer hits the gate thats how it got scratches.. Then where can i get the scratch remover..

Reply

fas July 21, 2009 at 2:57 pm

Aswath, thats bad. Anyways you can get the scratch remover at your local accessory shop.

thank you fas.. I also have another problem in my FZ. When i go alone in my bike at a speed of about 60 km, i can sense a kind of strain in the engine and vibrations in the Break pedal. But if i go doubles then the engine is perfectly fine. I had reported this issue to the service centre guys but they could not do anything. first they are not able to understand this problem. What to do fas.. My bike has completed 2000kms.

Reply

fas July 21, 2009 at 9:51 pm

Aswath, did your bike get serviced recently? Does the vibration only happen at 60kmph or at speeds above and below 60kmph too?

Reply

aswath July 22, 2009 at 3:37 pm

fas, last month on 8th only my bike went for the first service.. Before the first service i have not touched 60km speed. Vibration is not coming above the speed of 65km. Vibration is starting in between the speeds of exactly 58 to 63.But if i go doubles then the bikes engine is as smooth as a silk. What to do fas?

Reply

fas July 22, 2009 at 5:45 pm

Aswath, it sounds as if the vibration being caused at that particular speed is due to resonance. Check the air pressure and ask Yamaha people why its happening. Since it stops at 63kmph its nothing to worry about.

hi fas wht abt FZ-16 not having kickstrt it might be a problem after a period of time ?

Reply

fas July 23, 2009 at 8:57 pm

Amy, lack of kickstart is not a problem at all. Many bikes don’t have kick start nowadays and come with maintenance free batteries.

Reply

Amy July 23, 2009 at 9:09 pm

but if the battery fades!!!! or any problem occurs kick start provides an alternative!!!!

Reply

fas July 23, 2009 at 9:11 pm

Amy, the battery won’t fade and just in case it does you can push start the bike.

Actually i wanna go for a bike which one u suggests Pulsar or FZ / FS-s
taken in account
1. Technology
2. Handling
3. Comfort
4. Looks
5. Average ??
All in all a dream bike

fas July 23, 2009 at 9:28 pm

Amy, thats alot of things you want. You should get the Yamaha R15. If thats above your budget get the new Pulsar 220. It is a very good bike and will tick on most of your requirements.

Reply

fas July 25, 2009 at 11:27 pm

Sorry Amy for the late reply. Just saw your comment. I would say go ahead with the FZ16 if you like it. In the end what you like is what matters and not which bike is better. The Pulsar 220 is very VFM and thus seems the obvious choice but the FZ16 looks killer, rides well and Yamaha quality is much better than Bajaj. Get the FZ16 buddy :)

hi fas,
what is the actual topspeed of FZ 16

iam getting only 106 kmh with pillon , what more can go without pillon?
most of the website review says 120 kmh, is it true?

Reply

fas July 26, 2009 at 7:20 pm

Gopu, the FZ16 has a top speed of around 118kmph. However you will be able to do 125kmph on a downward sloping road.

hi fas….
plz provide me a comparison b/w these bikes,
Yamaha fazer 150,fz 16,pulsar 180….
which bike is better & why?……

Reply

fas July 27, 2009 at 5:48 pm

Arjun, Yamaha Fazer and FZ16 are very similar except the front. Both bikes are actually the same. The Pulsar 180 is more powerful and is very VFM. The Yamaha has better quality and will be very reliable in the long term. Tough decision it is to choose between one but I would take the FZ16.

will yamaha release any new model in fz series other then fazer?…

Reply

fas July 27, 2009 at 9:12 pm

Vijay, no bikes planned on the FZ platform as of now. Yamaha might launch more powerful engines though, but nothing in the near future.

but please guide, which is one good?…fazer or fz16,i known both are same,bt tell me any one…iam quite confused with that.

fas July 28, 2009 at 1:20 am

Vijay, I would suggest you get the Fazer since its a newer product. Both bikes are the same and it depends on what you prefer? Street fighter/naked look or otherwise.

hi fas…..
i like fz1 seats so much than fz16,it is possible to change the seat for fz16 with fz1′s?..
if possible means, where it is available?…..

Reply

fas August 1, 2009 at 9:08 pm

Vijay, everything is possible but at the cost of money. Its not feasible too and will require extensive modifications. Better to avoid since it will cost alot.

Vipin, I am not sure about the light bit, but I think only one light can be put on at a time. Same is the case with the R15 too.

hi fas….
which 150cc bike is ur chioce r15 or fazer?……

Reply

fas August 8, 2009 at 12:26 am

Vijay, both bikes are very different, the R15 is more for the highways, the Fazer more for the city. I would choose the Yamaha R15.

Pratik August 8, 2009 at 9:34 am

i bit different topic, HOW DO U CALCULATE MILAGE ?
i have apache rtr 160 so i can start a trip counter whenever i want so i usually start one when it comes to reserve and then fill up for eg 3 liters
and note the trip counter when it again comes to reserve for eg it comes to 140km, then the milage would be 140km/3 liters = 46.67km/liter
is it accurate ?
is there another method ?

hi fas,

can i install Fazer kit on FZ, what will be the cost.

Reply

fas August 8, 2009 at 4:24 pm

Yes Gopu, you can install Fazer kit in FZ16. Cost will be quite high as the fairing doesn’t come cheap. Ask your Yamaha dealer for more information.

hi fas

Iam planning to install K&N filter on my FZ.
what will be the cost for it?
what about the mileage and power?[after Fitting K&N]

Reply

fas August 9, 2009 at 11:48 am

Gopu, you can go for KnN filter. It will give you better peformance and slightly better mileage. I think it costs around Rs. 2000/- for the FZ16.

Reply

gopu August 12, 2009 at 5:09 pm

hi fas ,thanks for your replay

one question,
does yamaha company void bike’s warranty if we attached this k & n air filter in FZ ??

Reply

fas August 12, 2009 at 5:28 pm

Gopu, yes Yamaha might void your warranty. Its best to remove the filter before giving the bike for service.

Is there any FZ16 or FAZER upgrade from yamaha?

Reply

fas September 9, 2009 at 1:40 am

Gopu, no upgrades to existing bikes, only new bikes coming from Yamaha. R15 might get an upgrade though.

fas, i dont mean upgrade to existing FZ16 or Fazer,
i mean any new bike in FZ series.
