Scooters have all of a sudden come into focus in the Indian market, so much that every 2-wheeler manufacturer is launching more of them. Just recently Hero MotoCorp sold more scooters than TVS in the domestic market and the world’s largest 2-wheeler manufacturer is said to be boost its scooter production. The latest entrant in the scooter segment is Yamaha with the Ray. The Japanese bike company is betting big on the scooter market and expects the Yamaha Ray to boost volumes for them. The Yamaha Ray has a lot going for it and we couldn’t resist getting our hands on this scooter. So let’s find out if the Ray has the Yamaha DNA in it!

Styling – First look at the Yamaha Ray and you immediately notice how short are its dimensions, the low stance, and the very familiar edgy design panels which start from headlight to the tail light. It has been garnished with graphics, sharp lines and slashes on the side panels which join into the tail light flawlessly. The sleek exhaust is finished in black and comes with heat shield which has vents scooped out on it. The headlight dominates the front with its sheer size and has integrated turn indicators. According to Yamaha, the ‘v-cut’ shape at the front gives it a shape which looks like ‘jewellery’. We couldn’t agree more on it as it almost looks like a necklace from a certain angle. The three different colors used on the Yamaha Ray, the grey-colored forks and the body color gets all the attention.

Instrument Cluster and Switch Gear – The triangular instrument cluster blends in with the overall design. It uses clear lens for superior visibility, be it day or night. At the top, there is the analog speedo-meter with trip meter in the middle. The solitary turn indicator lights and the high beam indicator give a digital feel when lit. The lower part has the fuel gauge. The needles used in these gauges are very distinct and finicky; the speedo-meter needle hops around while it indicates the current speed. Switch gear is of good quality and has a positive feel to every click and doesn’t feel cheap like its rivals.

Ergonomics – The Yamaha Ray has a very comfortable seating position, upright and not so wide. Saddle height is really low which comes as a good news for short people. The seat is well cushioned; it’s a perfect balance for comfort on short trips and will help in long journeys as well. The grab handle at the back is a bit of stretch and small in size. Rear view mirror’s are very easy to adjust and offer very wide view of what is behind.

Performance and Gearbox – A feather touch to the self-start and the 113cc 4-stroke scooter comes to life in a very smooth manner; start up sound is very soothing to the ears. The Yamaha engine produces 7 HP of power at 7500 RPM and 8.1 Nm of torque at 5000 RPM. Since the Yamaha Ray weighs just 104 kgs, the scooter feels peppy and acceleration is brisk up to 60 km/h despite a pillion on-board, after which the scooter struggles to reach 75 km/h. Power delivery is peppy and the throttle responds to riders inputs quickly. There’s hardly any lag from the CVT gearbox in the beginning, which gives it good low end torque and mediocre mid-range. Performance is not the party piece of this scooter, but it has excellent drivability in the city and fuel efficiency.

Ride, Handling and Braking – Outright performance may not be Yamaha Ray’s party piece, but the handling is. It rides on a common set of 90 x 100 tires and 10-inch wheels, but has impressive grip levels. The chassis is stiff and the engine being a stressed member; it offers massive confidence when pushed into corners. The telescopic suspension geometry is well executed and it gives an excellent blend of cornering ability and ride quality. Ride quality at the front is stiff and you tend to feel the bumps at low speeds but as speed builds up, the suspension stays flat. The pillion is always comfortable because the rear suspension is slightly soft.

The Yamaha Ray sets a benchmark when it comes to handling because of the reassuring Yamaha DNA it carries along. The 130mm drum brakes at the front and rear do a splendid job of slowing you down from higher speeds. Thanks to the compact dimensions and low kerb weight, it stops without any sideways action, but emergency braking will see the front forks diving in. Manoeuvring in the city is a hassle free job, u-turn radius is short and it’s very nimble and agile in the city, thanks to the short wheelbase and re-assuring front suspension which doesn’t even let you down while making quick high speed lane changes. High-speed stability is excellent and there is very little wind blast.

Miscellaneous – The low mounted headlight has a good wide spread, but on those lonely dark highways, high beam doesn’t seem sufficient enough. The 128 mm ground clearance may seem low on paper, but with stiff suspension, we didn’t scrap the belly anywhere despite pillion on-board. Fit and finish is good, but we did find the brake levers at the front on the fragile side and lots of exposed bolts. The under seat storage of 15.5-litres doesn’t run deep and thus you can’t store a full face helmet. It is only good for keeping knick knacks or a small helmet. The hook which is placed above the floor board in most scooters makes it way on the top in the Yamaha Ray; convenient if you are carrying edible stuff, so your feet don’t touch them and also useful if you are carrying longer bags. The leg shield does protrude sometimes when you exit the scooter in a hurry, all though it will vary with different people with different sizes. Side stand and rear view mirrors come as standard fitment. Since this scooter will help Yamaha pick up volumes, we hope the limited number of service stations would be capable of handling the demands and provide quality service as well.

Conclusion – The long awaited Yamaha scooter finally arrives and it offers its customers a good proposition with a quality product and value for money price tag. The Yamaha DNA automatically gives it the best in class handling and dynamics package. Scooter enthusiasts are disappointed but we urge Yamaha to offer powerful scooters in the future. But right now, we think the Yamaha Ray is the best entry level scooter you can buy in the market today.

    You mentioned Hero Mototrs sold more scooters than TVS, The recently launched Maestro looks more Muscular and beefy than Activa with same drivetrain. It is catching up well in the market. For Ray, I would have liked slightly more power and Little more attention has been given for designing. Comparritively Dio got more proportions and looks better than Ray. When it comes to a purchase…I would prefer Yamaha…anyday…!!

    I received the delivery of Yamaha Ray (grey color) from Perfect Riders, Bangalore last week. This was a gift for my wife. The scooter is simply superb. My wife has a sort build and we had considered several scooters before finalising on the Ray. One scooter which came very close to contention was the Honda Dio. The only reason we had to reject the Dio was ‘considering the service standards’ at Honda dealerships. Having had a bad experience with them before, we had to reject this scoooter without any considerations.

    Coming to the Ray, the scooter is ‘perfect’ for ladies. The ground clearence is low, my wife can be comfortable when bringing the vehicle to a halt since her legs can reach the ground without much effort. The scooter feels peppy and is a delight to drive on city roads. The grip levels are very good and you feel real confident driving this vehicle on Bangalore roads. The scooter has very good head-lights. My wife was very happy riding this scooter in the night because the lighting was brilliant. It really lights up the entire stretch in front of you. The only negative factor was the horn. The horn is very meek. It sound so low that even you may have to straighten up your ears to hear it (kidding!). But ya, a more louder horn is preferred for Indian roads than what is being offered with this bike.

    One final word, my thanks to the folks at Perfect Riders to delivering the vehicle fast (within a week of booking), as per our request. This scooter has the potential to be a game changer for Yamaha in the scooter market!

    meine bhi ray scooter abhi 10/10/2012 ko kharida hai driving to badi hi achchhi hai , kintu isme 2-3 kami mujhe lagi 1.yeh scooter ladkiyo ke liye banaya gaya hai kintu gaadi ko khubsoorati kam di gayee hai , side glass simple lagaye gaye hai ii. fashionable steecker bhi nahi lagaaye gaye hai jis se ki gaadi looking achchhi aaye iii. off day mein maa + beti sath sath jana chahe to side footrest nahi diya hai , maa jeans pahan kar dono taraf tange rakh kar thodi baithegi iv. horn ki awaz city ke hisab se thodi kam hi dikhti hai city ke hisab se horn ki awaz thodi tej honi chahiye v. mileage ka abhi pakka pata nahi chal paya hai 1st service ke baad pata chal paayega kya avrage baithta hai ,vaise activa se to achchha hi baithta dikh raha hai vi. baki gaadi chalane mein gearless sabhi scooter mein mujhe to best lagi , pickup is solid suresh 14/10/2012

    Using Ray since 3 weeks. The average is around 40km/Lt in city driving. Hope It will increase after 1st servicing.
    Though good for shorter build, Occasionally whenever I drove it (ht.- 5′ 9″ ) for more than 10 minutes, I got severe backache . Saddle n Handle Height is aligned for short ht. only. I don’t feel any pain in Activa.

    Anything kept under seat Boot Space becomes Hot very soon, they should have provide some kind of covering or protection layer. Break Lever Lock is missing.

    Looks great. Finish is superb. Although it looks like Honda-Dio but People admire it after seeing Yamaha branding.
    There Toll Free No. 1800 420 1600 is mostly very busy & they work Monday to Friday between 8.30 AM – 4.30 PM only. Dialing Toll Free No. from Mobile is very frustrating experience. Maybe they should increase more lines, more persons.
    Their Accessories cost as shown in their web sites are: Seat Cover: Basic 210, Classic 430, Sports 479, Floor Mat 225, Tandem Foot Rest 560 Crash Gaurd – Front Style 600, Rear 590 Helmet: STEELBIRD Eimo – 1175, Avian @1380-1480.
    For Advance booking customer, they promised lucky gift for 1000 randomly selected customer & assured gift to all booking. Their is no way to cross check to whom they had given Lucky gift? we haven’t received any assured gift either. Maybe other user can share their experience.

    an awesome moped to be purchased and to be driven with. side view and back view are a fab , a good foot space AS WELL AS TELESCOPIC SUSPENSION AND 113 CC. overall a nice one to be owned.this nothing but the one and only all new YAMAHA RAY.

    Is it true that there is no footrest in RAY.
    Kick start impossible without central stand and to put on central stand is not possible by a normal lady?
    Head light does not turn when you turn the handle and this makes you blind in a turn.

    We have got Ray in the month of Oct,12……. it was surprising to get an average of 20/kmpl… even after 1st servicing….
    Have taken our Ray to showroom and some internal setting is been done …….
    Know lets hope for a good average :)……. as there is no another thought then Yamaha…
    keeping fingers cross to c a good mileage now……

      We went triples around 5-7kms on Ray (approx 220Kgs), still the pickup was good and road which we rode in Bangalore had lots of path holes…

    Hi Guys…..I got my new Yamaha Ray, (Black) in first week of Jan 2013 from Panache Enterprises, Bangalore.
    Since the day one I had a problem with accelerator, it was completely tight to handle.
    I inform the servicemen on the same delivery day, later he loosen and give it back.
    Still I felt uncomfortable to drive. I had to wait till 1st service(I guess, now they have changed accelerator wire).
    This Bike is awesome to drive, very good comfort, no back pain and remarkable telescopic suspension(shock absorber).
    Last I checked with mileage its coming 38Km/Lt……….. which is not good :-(
    Will inform them in next service, for the mileage part. :-)
    I recommend Yamaha Ray to those who are going for Scooter, as I have compared all scooters (Activa, Access, Wego, Rodeo….. )
    As I felt ” Yamaha Ray The Best” :-D ………………Enjoy…!!!

    Please let me know if its possible to upgrade to tubeless tyres in the RAY (like DIO have ).

      I suggest you to go for “with tube Tyre” , if by chance your vehicle gets punctured you have to look around for that tubless Tyre expert..were as with tube can find everywhere…around the corner..:-)
      Also the cost is double for tubeless Tyre to put puncture Tyres :-P

      Better to have With Tube Tyre vehicle.

    All the time I have to drive through crowded roads, so much that I don’t even get to ride in the economy zone. I have to continously keep fluctuating the speed and innumerable times I come to standstill in a short span of 2kms that I have to ride many times a day. My choices are Dio HET & Ray. I want more frugal one, out of the Dio Het & Ray. Considering my usage pattern, what do you guys suggest me? I think the Dio would give more FE due to HET. Is the Dio atleast 10% more frugal than the Ray?
