The Fiat Linea petrol will get a 1.4-litre 95bhp twin-cam engine. This 16-valve motor does duty in the Grande Punto in Turkey, and will be offered in the Grande Punto when it goes on sale in India later next year. This engine will be produced at Fiat’s Ranjangaon plant, which will help Fiat to keep costs down. The Linea’s launch has been postponed to January due to low sentiments after the terror attacks.
Fiat is also revamping its entire dealer network with the aim of improving its service standards as it prepares to launch the Linea. The company wants to change the perception of its service and aftersales network and is investing heavily in an extensive dealer upgradation programme.

This vehicle is very much under powered with an engine delivers only 95 BHP when its direct competitor Honda city is powered with 118 BHP engine. For the size of this vehicle is it not underpowered?
Also why FIAT keeping same engine for Punto and Linea?why should one go for Linea by paying premium?is it b’cos of its boot or categorised as saloon?I am sure in terms of interior specs there won’t be much of a difference between punto&Linea?then why is call by FIAT?
Can anyone tell about this Engine?is it worthwhile going for this vehicle over City?I am waiting to buy this vehicle but now I am bit disappointed about the choice of the engine. My usage will be 25 to 30 KMs per day and around 1000KMs/month.If someone help me choosing a right vehicle between City&Linea,it would be very helpful.
Thanks,
Gopal.

The Fiat Linea’s diesel engine will be quite economical. It will have good torque and will be fun to drive. Obviously the new City is more powerful but we can’t rule out the petrol Linea till we drive it. But we do agree with you, Fiat should have given the car more power, especially when it compares to the Civic/Corolla segment.

Does Fiat Linea - PETROL has adequate ZAP??? Is Driving enjoyable?
I do tried the 1.3L Diesel. It was alright. I prefer the Petrol Variant. However, I need favorable comment on it…..
Thanks.

The petrol Linea has decent power. Nothing extraordinary but not to low on power either. Only thing being the closest competitor the new City has a stunning 118bhp VTEC engine.

Although LINEA & IVTEC are in direct competetion but one has to accept the fact that LINEA comes with a 1.4 Ltr engine whereas IVTEC has a 1.5 Ltr engine which is bound to give more power to the vehicle. However in terms of features & solidity, I believe LINEA is certainly ahead of its competetior. LINEA is 150 kgs more heavier than IVTEC & comes with a thicker gauge of sheet metal. IVTEC is more cosmetic whereas LINEA has depth. If you can ignore the figures on the pick up which nevertheless you will not be able to judge till you race the 2 vehicles, I don’t think LINEA will disappont anybody. Both will give the same pleasure of driving, maybe LINEA might be a notch better.

I too agree with Mr.Harpreet. I feel LINEA is more rugged than City. However to decide between petrol and diesel in LINEA -other than the cost economics we really need to know abt the performance of the petrol engine as it has torque of 115 whereas diesel it is 203 which is more helpful in city driving where we can drive at slow speed without changing the gear.If anyone can throw more info on this it will be helpfull for all of us who are planning to buy this vehicle.

I am in planning to buy the petrol version of Linea. My daily milage is hardly 15 kms and monthly is 1000 kms. I am in confusion about selecting. Petrol or diesel. My usual travel is hilly terrain. Pls advice. I also want tocompare the fuel consumption rate of Linea and New City. Is linea worth its cost.
February 6th, 2009 at 11:12 am
Shaji, I suggest you get the Linea diesel. It has lots of torque which will surely help in driving in hilly terrain. You will also get better resale from the diesel. The Linea is worth the cost with all the features and space it offers. The Honda City Petrol will give more fuel efficiency then the Linea but the diesel Linea will give way much more kms to the liter then the new City. Get the Linea Diesel.

Have driven Diesel (Emotion Pk), it is a good value for money. See a lot of discussion about the engine being underpowered. I think we all are obsessed with BHP, we need to look at torque as well.
Linea is a great performer, though expected better platics.
It makes you exclusive, practically everyone (in this category) drives City, Fiat Linea is for the select few.
Happy and safe motoring.

Have test driven linea diesel but do have some reservations to wear and tear down 3 years. But petrol engine is quite underpowered. Still confused either should go for diesel or petrol. City except engine power does not stand near Linea. Imagine a 9 lac car ( civiv 11 lacs ) without basic features like automatic temp controls , sensors and other features which are very well there in Linea top end model.
Still awaiting on road performance reports due to Fiat record in India.

Ajay, get the Linea if you don’t mind the service. If I was in your shoes, I would get the Linea without thinking twice. However if resale and service is important to you, get the new City.

m planning to buy linea in few months but m confused in linea petrol or diesel , which will b a better car for me linea diesel or linea petrol plz help me

Rahul, the Linea diesel is a better bet of the two. Get the diesel variant. Better to drive and more fuel efficient.

I test drove the Linea Petrol and was quite disappointed by the sluggishness of the initial pick up. After rpm reaches 4500 it takes off like a rocket but for city driving you need that extra zip when overtaking, usually from rpms lower than 4000. So if you expect ‘jack rabbit’ starts from the traffic signal then dont go for the petrol.
The really ‘wow’ features like ‘climate control and Blu&ME are only in the top end and price difference between Diesel and Petrol variants is substantial. Can anyone tell me about the consumption of then petrol version in city driving? I have heard it does not even give 10!? That would be another reason to not go for petrol.
May 23rd, 2009 at 1:41 pm
Anupam, the diesel variant will give good mileage and has excellent pick up and torque at low speeds. Resale will be better too. If price is an issue I suggest you wait for another 20 days when Fiat launch the Grande Punto, which will be similar in every aspect, minus the big boot. If boot is a requirement then you should checkout the SX4 and the City (pricey). The Honda City, Maruti SX4 don’t give 10 either so its not that the Linea Petrol is bad, petrol cars do drink.

Faisal, Thanks for your good advice, and information that the Grande Punto will be launched in 20 days! (Hope its not delayed!).
My ‘budget’ is 8 Lakhs and I guess the Top end model of the Punto will be less than that. However, I did like the luxury ‘extras’ in the lInea. like the Climate Control, Steering mounted controls and Blu & ME. Do you know if these will be offered in the Punto as well?
Frankly I’m through with Korean and Japanese cars and want a solid European car which will last me a long time with trouble free running.
May 25th, 2009 at 2:10 am
Anupam, all the features of the Linea will be available in the Grande Punto.
