Ford EcoSport 1.5 Petrol Manual Review

Ford EcoSport Petrol Trend Review

Ford EcoSport Petrol Review

Here at MotorBeam, we have reviewed each and every engine of the Ford EcoSport but many requested us to post a review of the 1.5-litre engined EcoSport which is paired to a manual gearbox. The Ford EcoSport is available in a wide range of options but the Ti-VCT powered variants are naturally in demand as they come at mouth watering prices. Ford has currently stopped taking bookings of select variants (mostly EcoBoost and diesel powered models) but people can still go ahead and book the 1.5-litre petrol engined variants (mostly Ambiente and Trend, which we will refer to as lower variants in this post). We took a quick spin in the EcoSport 1.5-litre petrol to find out if the base variants make much sense?

To the layman’s eyes, there isn’t much to differentiate the lower variants from the higher variants from the outside. The Ambiente and Trend variants lack chrome lining on the grille and chrome surrounds on the foglight housing (there are no fog lights on offer).

No roof rails on the lower variants either, something which you can definitely do without (unless you want to put a roof rack).

The biggest difference is the lack of alloy wheels. The steel wheels are 15-inchers bolted on to 195/65 tyres instead of 205/60 tyres bolted on 16-inch alloy wheels. However the smaller wheels don’t spoil the presence of the EcoSport.

The interiors are the same across the range but the difference lies in the equipment levels. The lower variants get lesser equipment but Ford has offered an audio system (with Bluetooth, AUX and USB connectivity) on all the variants.

The colour scheme on the doors is slightly different (lighter shade).

Notice the steering mounted audio controls which are offered on all variants except the base Ambiente.

The screen on the top of the centre console isn’t present on the lower variants. Notice the placements of buttons on the audio system is very different too. USB port placed right in between the buttons, while unlock switch is placed on the top of the audio system, instead of below it.

No airbags on the lower variants. EcoSport badge placed on the left side of the dashboard looks abrupt. Quality levels feel the same as the top variants.

Manual AC on the lower variants. Notice the black finish on the gear knob instead of silver found on Titanium variants.

The space inside the cabin is generous for four adults. The seats are supportive but the light fabric won’t work well in our dusty conditions.

The instrument cluster lacks silver surrounds. The 1.5-litre petrol engine produces 112 PS of power at 6300 RPM and 140 Nm of torque at 4400 RPM, coupled to a 5-speed manual transmission. NVH levels are excellent and the engine is barely audible at idle. This motor offers linear performance and moves the heavy EcoSport with ease. However the engine doesn’t offer tarmac scorching performance and doesn’t offer instant response like the EcoBoost motor, specially in the mid-range. At high revs, the Ti-VCT engine is quite audible and feels a bit strained near the redline. However for city driving, the engine has more than enough pep, while out on the highways, you will have to work the gearbox a bit to get going swiftly. The 5-speed gearbox offers slick shifts with short throws. The clutch is light but feels a bit spongy when you disengage it. Expect a mileage of 9-10 km/l in the city and 11-12 km/l on the highway.

So does buying the 1.5-litre petrol engined EcoSport make much sense? YES, it does. The engine offers decent performance and if your running isn’t much, you can give the diesel model a skip. If you are not much into driving and want a car just to commute, you can give the EcoBoost engine a miss (EcoBoost is by far the best powertrain on the EcoSport). The top-end variants offer as much value as the lower variants, since you get a plethora of features in the Titanium trim. However if you are on a tight budget, getting the lower variants makes a lot of sense too. On the exterior front, there is little to distinguish from higher variants while on the inside, you still get basic equipment like power windows, power steering, audio system, AC, etc. Thus the lower variants of the Ford EcoSport make for a great alternative for hatchback buyers, who can spend slightly more to get a compact SUV which is more practical for our roads.

Good job Faisal… Your the first amongst the Indian auto journalists who understood the need to do this.. appreciate it..

The Ecosports major interest in Indian public started with price and that price advantage in terms of less price is available only with the low end models.. prices of 5.69 lacs exshowroom is applicable only to these products not the Titanium + Diesel!!

Im happy that the car is good… however it wouldve been good if you get a DGPS system to test the car for its 0-100 and top speed etc.. nevertheless.. keep up the good work..

    • http://www.motorbeam.com/ Faisal Khan

Thanks Pravin. 0-100 km/hr takes around 16 seconds. Top speed is 165 km/hr (approx). More than these figures drivability is good in the city.

  • nithish

good review faisal…… but i have a small doubt which is better either petrol or diesel, some of my friends suggest me that it is better to take a petrol car rather than diesel because they said that there will be a difference of 30-40 thousand per year between petrol and diesel car during maintainence .so please tell me which is better and also in perfomance wise

    • http://www.motorbeam.com/ Faisal Khan

Nithish, with old cars, the difference in petrol and diesel maintenance was high, not the same with new cars. If your running is high, go for the diesel.

      • Pravat

        Hi Faisal,

Your review on Ford eco sport lower variant is really appreciable. I know you are the expert in this auto segment. Here you have mentioned that “If your running is high, go for the diesel”, Could you please let me know what do you mean by “running high” I mean to say If my daily travelling is below 40 Km then whether it is categories under high running?

        • http://www.motorbeam.com/ Faisal Khan

Pravat, if you are doing more than 1500 kms a month, than diesel makes sense, else petrol.

  • Saurabh

Very good review. Are you sure about the mileage though ? Because even for a normal city commuter 9-10 km/l mileage wont be enough. If its true then its very less for a 4 seater mini suv …

    • http://www.motorbeam.com/ Faisal Khan

Saurabh, yes the mileage is true. It’s what you will get in Mumbai city conditions with 100% AC.

  • Shashank

Hii Faizal Can You Tell me The Real average of Ecosport, Diesel Petrol, Ecoboost as per i though it gives 16 km per litre 2 litre more than Duster ?

    • http://www.motorbeam.com/ Faisal Khan

Shashank, here it is (real mileage and not ARAI, in city)

      EcoSport Diesel – 15-16 km/l
      EcoSport EcoBoost – 11-12 km/l
      EcoSport 1.5 P – 9-10 km/l
      EcoSport AT – 9-10 km/l
      Duster 85 PS – 14-15 km/l
      Duster 110 PS – 13-14 km/l

These figures are what we have got on our tests.

  • nithish

thank you.. faisal for your reply

  • Arun

My average driving is 1200 Kms per month. I am interest in buying EcoSport Trend. Can you recommend me Petrol or Diesel please?

    • http://www.motorbeam.com/ Faisal Khan

Arun, opt for the diesel model.

  • Mayur

Hi Faisal, Upto how many kilometers on average per month does it make sense to go for Petrol Engine? I do about 900 kms. Also, in city conditions, is the mileage same for both the AT & MT of petrol engine (in Bangalore, shorter distances/more signals perhaps than mumbai?) ? considering that is it be better to go for AT?

    • http://www.motorbeam.com/ Faisal Khan

Mayur, at least 1200 kms. AT mileage is similar to MT. Yes go for AT, it’s hassle-free.

  • Sunny Sangtani

hi faisal.. thank you for the review as none of the automobile site have reviewed the 1.5 petrol. i have booked the trend version. have i made the right decision. i am just worried about the enging and the fuel efficiency. i have not even test driven as they dont have any 1.5 petrol for demo. and is the suspension good. many sites are giving negative reviews for plastic quality and vibration at high speed. please guide me should i buy or not.
    thank you.

    • http://www.motorbeam.com/ Faisal Khan

Sunny, don’t worry go ahead and buy it. Yes plastic quality is average, not bad but not great either.

      • Sunny Sangtani

and what bout the engine performance, fuel efficiency, handling and suspension?

  • swaraj

Good job Faisal Khan ,no body had done this 1.5L review before. Is that mileage for wagon R second generation is same as that of ecosport 1.5L petrol(by running 100% AC on both models). And is it possible to add accessories like roof rail, front chrome grill, fog lamps,Rear power windows and driver seat arm rest?

    • http://www.motorbeam.com/ Faisal Khan

Swaraj, yes the mileage is around that but reasonable considering the weight and engine tech. All those accessories can be added easily, either at the dealer or even outside.

      • swaraj

        Thanks Faisal ..

  • BNRAO

Heloo Faisal, Its a good review for ppl who are in confusion (diesel or petrol), I am also in the same line..I had booked Ambient version, my of my friends suggested me to go for petrol since my average running for month will be 300 – 400KM (weekends). The reason for opting diesel is just mileage. Please kindly suggest the rite one for me in terms of maintenance.
Recently i have gone through i10Grand petrol and diesel. Now in real confusion, Please suggest me one best for me..waiting for your valuable response..
    DR BNRao

    • http://www.motorbeam.com/ Faisal Khan

BN Rao, get the EcoSport. Grand i10 is a good car but it’s much smaller. EcoSport is good, the petrol engine offers decent performance and maintenance is not high like VW.

  • Anshul Goel

Hey Faisal… Very nice review… I want to know what will be the maintainance cost of ecosport diesel if my monthly run is less… I want to buy diesel because at present my run is less but it might increase in future.

    • http://www.motorbeam.com/ Faisal Khan

Maintenance is not high. Have a look at our long term review of the Figo and you will get a rough idea.

      • Anshul Goel

Thanku Faisal… And tell me one more thing what is the fuel efficiency of 1.0l petrol engine and how it works?… I have a doubt that weather 999cc engine is sufficient for this huge car?… How will this engine work on highways at high speeds?… And in hilly areas if car is fully loaded?

  • Anshul

Hey Faisal… I am waiting for your precious advice… Please guide me…

  • mukund

I heard from reliable source, the petrol version attracts higher excise duty, and Ford in not interested in selling Petrol version. Is it true? Similar is the case with Duster, in my city Nagpur the dealer has sold only one Petrol Duster.

    • http://www.motorbeam.com/ Faisal Khan

Yes, because petrol 1.5-litre does not fit into small car excise norms.

  • vgupta

is ford is giving 1.5 litre petrol ecosport or it is stopped now

    • http://www.motorbeam.com/ Faisal Khan

      VGupta, it’s on sale.

  • vgupta

    Hi Faisal
A very good review.I want to book ecosport latest by tomorrow, took test drive. My budget 8.5 lac ex-showroom price.Monthly running 500 kms.Titanium version good as all ABS and airbags,CD player etc.So i wish to book 1.5 litre titanium petrol under my budget but dealer is saying 18 months delivery time which will reduced later on.Also as you told ford not interested in petrol version due to high duty and may discontinue lateron.Shall i go for trend 1.5 litre diesel as waiting time is also low 7 months , but ABS, airbags etc will not be there

    • http://www.motorbeam.com/ Faisal Khan

Go for petrol since your running is not much. See if you can get the EcoBoost version.

  • KishoreV

    Hi Faisal,
Thank you very much for the review, as I have been waiting for 1.5 petrol review since long. I have recently booked 1.5 petrol trend. But some of my colleagues say, Ford petrol doesn’t have good resale value and are asking me to go for diesel version. My average run is around 650-750 kms/month out of which 300 kms will be on highways. Please do suggest?

    • http://www.motorbeam.com/ Faisal Khan

Kishore, diesel cars have better resale value, naturally. But the additional amount you pay for buying a diesel car and the resale (factoring in the time value of money), is not justified. Get the petrol.

  • Dr Ramaraj

The difference between petrol and diesel ambiente is 1.5 lakhs and my average monthly run is 700 km .Am I justified if I go still go for diesel model considering the resale value after 3 to 5 yrs ? what is the difference in maintenance costs annually ?

    • http://www.motorbeam.com/ Faisal Khan

Not much difference in maintenance but going by your running, get the petrol version.

  • iftekhar khan

    Hi Faisal,
Thanks for helping so many people with your valuable suggestions. I need your suggestion also. I have booked Ecosport Ambient and my running is almost 900 KM per month. SHould i go for Diesel version or petrol. One more questions do you think that Ecosport Trend is better tha Ambient. According to me there is no big differences except for ABS. Please suggest.

    • http://www.motorbeam.com/ Faisal Khan

Go for the petrol as your running is not much. ABS is helpful and worth the extra price.

  • prashant

hello faisal…um verry much confused regarding AMAZE AND ECO SPORT petrol models…can you help me out which one to go for..my average run is 600 per month.my budget is 6 lk to 6.50 lk.

    • http://www.motorbeam.com/ Faisal Khan

      Prashant, get the Amaze.

  • Sajith

    Hi Fisal,
Please help me choose between Vento highline and Ford ecosport diesel titanium (opt). My primary requirments are performance, comfort, ground clearnace, looks and mileage in the order mentioned before.
    Thanks.

    • http://www.motorbeam.com/ Faisal Khan

Sajith, if you can wait, then the EcoSport would be the one to opt for.

      • Deepak Sharma

        Dear Mr. Faisal
Even I am in the same fix. With 1200 km of crowded Delhi driving, which should I opt for. Diesel or petrol? Manual or auto?

        • http://www.motorbeam.com/ Faisal Khan

Diesel for efficiency, petrol auto for convenience.

  • Chintan

Hi, Thanks for this review. I think this is only one review with basic model of ecosport over Internet which I was looking for. So really thanks for that.

    1) I have one question that shown model in this article is Ambiente Version or Trend one? Also want to know that basic Ambiente model has “Driver Height Adjustable Seat” and “Mounted Audio Control”..

    2) Petrol model’s booking is still closed in Gujarat. Any Idea when it should re-open?

    • http://www.motorbeam.com/ Faisal Khan

Chintan, the model shown here is Trend. Height adjustable steering wheel is standard on all variants but the steering mounted audio controls start from Trend variant onwarads.

      2) It should be opened by the end of the year.

      • Chintan

        Thanks Faisal for reply.
Actually I was asking about “Driver Height Adjustable Seat” ,not steering wheel.
Is that also standard in all variants ?

Very sad regarding booking. Any idea how much ecosport ford makes in a month ?
        Thanks,

        • http://www.motorbeam.com/ Faisal Khan

Chintan, yes driver height adjust is standard too. Ford makes around 5000 units of the EcoSport every month.

  • Kshirod

    Hi, Faisal
Good to read your detail review. I have some doubt please clarify them

    1. I want to buy a Petrol Ecosport, as my monthly travel will be around 700 KM, also, I have to go for tour frequently, so, the car will stand for around 4 month in a year. Considering these things I have decided to go for a Petrol engine. Is this a correct decision??? Or Should I go for Diesel….. Please give ur suggestion.
    2. Now in Petrol there is a big confusion, Whether to go for Ecoboost or 1.5 normal Petrol engine…. I am in Gandhinagar, which has very little Traffic. So, What would you suggest for me to buy??? Ecoboost or Petrol Automatic.

Please answer these two questions, as I am really confused. I have zeroed down to Ecoboost, but I will love to have your suggestion regarding whether, Petrol Automatic will be a ideal choice for me.

    • Chintan

      Hi Kshirod,
One question to you. Is booking of petrol ecosport open in Gandhinagar? I am living in Baroda but here it is closed. I want to book one.

It would be very helpful if you let me know current situation there.

      Thanks,

      • Kshirod

No, Chintan, actually it is not, but they are saying they will take the booking with 1 year waiting period. But I am getting one from my home town Bhubaneswar, where the delear is ready to deliver in less time.

    • http://www.motorbeam.com/ Faisal Khan

Kshirod, get the petrol automatic. EcoBoost engine more fun but automatic is more convenient.

      • Kshirod

Thank you very much for your reply Faisal. If you don’t mind can you just elaborate on that how the Automatic will be a better choice than the 1 ltr. Ecoboost. Because I have heard that Ecoboost is a far better performer that the normal 1.5 ltr. Petrol engine.

  • Serenity

Nice job Faisal…Well searching all over the net for an ecosport base model review I struggled a lot.And finally you are with a lot of help to us..Thanx many….all the info’s were helpful..And just to let you guys know,I’ve
Booked the ambiente 1.5p…My running a would be low….Hope this’s the best deal I had…

    Once again….good job Faisal….

    • http://www.motorbeam.com/ Faisal Khan

Congrats Serenity on your booking. Do let us know when you get the car.

  • Sandip

    Hi Faisal,
Nice review. I have booked 1.5P Ambiente and will be getting delivery in next 15 days or so. Would you please suggest me must have accessories for ES Ambiente. Will it be better to buy from outside than from dealer? Will it void warranty?

    Thanks and Regards

    • http://www.motorbeam.com/ Faisal Khan

Sandip, audio system and seat covers are a must have. You can get it done from outside the dealer and warranty shouldn’t be an issue.

  • Kunal

Hi Faisal, thanks for a brilliant and much needed review. I was one of the guys who asked you for a detailed review of the 1.5 P manual review and here it is first on any car website that’s why i like motorbeam. Great Job !
I read in the discussion above that given a choice between amaze petrol and ecosport 1.5 P you would recommend amaze ? I’m asking since I’m looking to buy one soon I like the petrol ecosport manual for its sheer value for money package but I’m a bit concerned about the mileage my running is low say 600-700 kms a month but i enjoy driving (currently swift petrol). Please suggest between the amaze / ecosport petrol ?? criteria Refinement, mileage, comfort, low maint., performance & space.

    Thanks in advance !

    • http://www.motorbeam.com/ Faisal Khan

Thanks Kunal. I suggested Amaze as the person wanted a good engine, the Ford petrol engine is just average. But for those who have low running, you can opt for the EcoSport 1.5. Mileage is around 10 km/l.

  • Kunal

Which will be the best looking color for ecosport 1.5 P ambiente ?? Considering longevity, best fit for the looks ?

    • http://www.motorbeam.com/ Faisal Khan

Kunal, Mars Red and White look good.

  • veera

i am in dilemma either to buy basic diesel or petrol version of Ecosport. I used to drive 5000km/annum and preferably outskirts of city. but i am worried on the petrol version mileage ,can you tell me the average mileage outside the city ? and suggest me which one to buy

    • http://www.motorbeam.com/ Faisal Khan

Veera, if you can afford the diesel model, get it, it’s better to drive too. Mileage on the highways of the EcoSport 1.5 petrol is 12 km/l.

  • Chintan

    Hi Faisal,
    Sorry, comes with new question.
I am in Gujarat and I know that Fold is planning to start manufacturing cars in Sanand as Plant is in process. Do you have any idea when it will start and when it will manufacturing ecosport to capture demands?

    Thanks,
    Chintan.

    • http://www.motorbeam.com/ Faisal Khan

Chintan, production won’t start in Sanand before 2015.

  • Chintan

Any info about launch of ford fiesta ST in India ? Will it launch in India ?? Ford show it in Shanghai Auto Show 2013.

  • Chintan

Any info about launch of ford fiesta ST Or Fiesta S Hatch in India ? Will it launch in India ?? Ford show it in Shanghai Auto Show 2013.

  • dr.prateek

probably the best review i have read about 1.5 litre engine of ecosport.every 1 has been talking about ecoboost. this page is the best description of the basic model. faisal,i hav ebooked 1.5l P amb model, i heard from a friend who recently went to dehradun woth his new ecosport that at high speed like 100 110 kmph the car began to rumble a bit. is that possible? i am worried about my decison as i already have swift and it reaches 110 without much difficultty and feels quite sturdy. please help. and yes l mention that 1.5l p is value for money car. just ckear my doubt about this and i will surely go for the 1.5l P model.

  • sunny

the last question was a vey gud 1…is it true Faisal??even i have booked 1.5 p trend…and even my maruti 800 runs @ 100-110 without any problem o hyways…..is it ture dat ecosport tends to rumble @ such high speed??cse it can be dangerous….dat means dat the car might be unstable???

    • http://www.motorbeam.com/ Faisal Khan

Sunny, EcoSport doesn’t rumble at any speed.

  • sunny

also does it tend to lose the grip at such high speeds??

  • Ankit Agarwal

    Hi Faisal,

    – Please help me in taking the right car for me? I would appreciate if you can provide a reason for your suggestion.
    Thanks!

    • http://www.motorbeam.com/ Faisal Khan

I would suggest the Grand i10 as it comes loaded with a lot of features and the top end model will fit in your budget.

  • anant

    dear faisal,

i am a lady aged 45 yrs and am deciding to buy a new petrol vehicle for myself. my priorities are driving comfort under city conditions which would offer me less strain on my knees and easy driving. my choices are between the vento , honda city and ecosport. kindly suggest as i am deeply confused.

  • Puneet

    Hi Faisal,
I have booked Ecosport Trend Diesela as my running per month is arounf 2500 kms.. i want to know whether i can get the screen installed in the empty space as that area looks bad without a screen.

    Thanks,
    Puneet

    • http://www.motorbeam.com/ Faisal Khan

Yes you can, dealer should have it.

      • Puneet

        Hi Faisal,

Actually I wanted to know about the screens available in the market… I tried to search over the net but it is displaying results for some chinese DVD+GPS player. I just want to install a screen which can connect to reverse parking camera and car stereo if possible. Also, is it suggestible to go for aftermarket roof rails ??

        thanks,
        Puneet

        • http://www.motorbeam.com/ Faisal Khan

Puneet, ask Ford dealer to get you OE Ford screen. You can get aftermarket stuff for everything, audio system and roof rails.

  • Anup

    Hi Faisal,

I am confused between Swift Dezire and Ford Ecosport ( petrol versions). My usage is pretty low (approx 200 to 300 KM) per month. I am confused on the interior space and reliability (maruti vs ford). Pls suggest.

  • Madan Gavane

    Hi Faisal ,
I am using eco- sport 1.5 ;it petrol, trend for last three months and found that the mileage is less than 9Km/Lit
the car is serviced once but no improvement. Please suggest how to improve the mileage
    I am worried .

    • http://www.motorbeam.com/ Faisal Khan

Madan, try changing your pump, ensure proper tyre pressure and shift gears around 2500 RPM.

  • Rajesh

hi faisal, any idea with the maintenance cost on yearly basis?

also isn’t the mileage is too low 9km/l as compared to company claiming it as 16km/l?

    • http://www.motorbeam.com/ Faisal Khan

The mileage which they claim is under test conditions, which is never achievable in real world conditions.

      • Rajesh

n hw abt the maintenance for ford on yearly basis? how much that wud cost?

i hav already booked ecosport petrol ambiente model in the first week of july…but dealer has informed that will get the car in december……any idea is the car is under production? as i havent seen a single trend and ambiente models petrol cars in mumbai

  • Sandip Biranwar

    Hi Faisal,
I am getting delivery of my 1.5Petrol Ecosport Trend Model on 1st Nov 13. I have asked for VIN number to SA and it is DGXXXXX. After decoding it, I says Year of Mfg 2013 and Month as August. Three months difference between date of Mfg and Delivery! Does it sound normal since the Ecosport is getting sold/delivered to customers like a flash. If its not please help me what i can I do about it.

    Thanks & Regards
    Sandip

    Avishek
    Kolkata

    • http://www.motorbeam.com/ Faisal Khan

No i30 for India. Don’t go by looks, EcoSport a much better than Verna. Electric retracting mirrors from outside won’t be reliable. Go for EcoBoost.

      • Avishek

        Dear Mr. Khan

Thanks fr your suggestions and would also like to thank fr the above review which s very informative. Jst ve 2 silly ques fr u…..if u ve time den plz revert…

Avishek, yes DRLs will look really good.

          I would choose white.

    Hi Faisal,

I am planning to buy my first car eco sports 1.5 petrol trend… my monthly usage will bearound 200 Kms, assuming every weekend atleast 50 kms, once in 3 months will go for long drive of 400-600 kms. Do u recommend eco sports or swift desire.

    Thanks

    • http://www.motorbeam.com/ Faisal Khan

      Anil, EcoSport a better option.

  • Kiran George

I got my ecosport 1.5 P Trend, 3 days back. I am happy with everything it offers other than the performance. Initial pickup is very poor , Faisal can I expect some difference after my first service ?

    • http://www.motorbeam.com/ Faisal Khan

Kiran, yes minor difference after first service.

  • Chakravarty

    Hi Faisal !
ve nt taken test drive of the Ecosport. Would go for the Ecoboost. Plz let know if the pick up is good or not and at highways, if 120-125 is achievable…

    Thanks & Regards
    Chakravarty

    • http://www.motorbeam.com/ Faisal Khan

Chakravarty, EcoBoost does 150 km/hr with ease.

  • NEHA SINGH

    HI FAISAL

this is NEHA ,I have read all of your reviews i just love to read your reviews…
we are planning to buy our 1st car and our daily uses will be around 50 km.i just love ECOSPORT.My husband wants to buy i10 or swift but i think ecosport is a youngster car and it will suit us as we are in the age of 28-32 year .
our budget is 6-7 lacs .we have planned to buy an ambient diesel as we can afford this.
ambient will good ?is there any difference by look in ambient or other ecosport model as it is a base one.
i heared that the diesel will give a milage upto 18-20 .is it true .plz guide
    thanks
    NEHA

    • http://www.motorbeam.com/ Faisal Khan

Neha, EcoSport is a good car but there is quite a lot of waiting period for it. Mileage is 15 km/l in real world conditions. There are minor differences in the appearance of the variants.

      • Neha Singh

thanks a ton for your reply :-)
what would be the minor differences ? there will be any differences in height and width ?
and what is the max waiting period ?as we have plan to take in feb or march…
milage would be better after servicing ?

        • http://www.motorbeam.com/ Faisal Khan

Differences like chrome in grille etc but body shape is the same and thus height and width is the same. Waiting period depends on variant/colour/region. Book it now, you should get it by April.

Mileage will improve marginally after first service.

  • Mayank Maheshwari

Hi, I am planning to buy ecosport 1.5P ambiente….I plan to install a CNG kit after one year…Is it advisable to do so if buying the diesel version is out of question?? And can the empty space on top of audio console enquoh to be utilized with a GPS System or a 2 din stereo screen??

    • http://www.motorbeam.com/ Faisal Khan

CNG kit will void warranty. 2-din system or GPS can be installed in the centre console.

  • Sunil b

    Hi,
    Faisal,
Good review indeed! i was trying to understand from others who have used this version…but no info on this version on net…
I have been using ecosport 1.5p,trend since a month now.earlier i had hyundai accent.u mentioned rightly that city driving is comfortable. cutting the edges is neat and well in control.higher seating position and drivability offers the easiness.
But,somehow, i feel 1.5p as under performer on highways as i commute daily on palm beach road in new Mumbai.it lacks pick up.other cars lower in cc also rides me over. This seems to be the area of concern as petrol version engine being naturally aspirated. Also up till i haven’t got the a mileage more that 8km/l..(can ecosport be launched in cng….i got the info in one of the sites on internet)
it feels uncomfortable to drive above 80km/hr speed as the engines starts making sound at 3rd/4th gear..

Just want to know is this the nature of car….am not very happy by performance when compared to pep which hyundai accent offered.i only hope now that first servicing may improve the performance or cng version if launched then can be exchanged with this.

    Kindly comment….thanks…

    • http://www.motorbeam.com/ Faisal Khan

Sunil, is your first service done?

      • Sunil.b

first service is not yet done..

        • http://www.motorbeam.com/ Faisal Khan

After first service, things should improve.

  • Prashant S

    Hi Faisal,
First of all thanks for such a detailed and great review, it really helped people like me who have booked the Petrol version without even test drive.
I have booked Ecosports 1.5P Trend, after making me wait for 4 months now Noida Ford is saying we cannot deliver the vehicle so either cancel your booking or you can convert it into Diesel and they will give it in same time which was promised at the time of booking. My budget is 8 Lac should I go for 1.5D Ambiente ? My average monthly running would be somewhere around 1000 Km. Or should i go for some other Petrol car ?

    Thanks in Advance,

    • http://www.motorbeam.com/ Faisal Khan

Prashant, get the diesel, it’s a better engine and more fun to drive too.

  • saarthak

    dear faisal

I am planning to buy petrol 1.5 titanium model , but the thing is the car is not available is it because of the excise norms i read it somewhere and will ford produce these engines for ecosport in near future,if yes when do you think they will start taking bookings?

    • http://www.motorbeam.com/ Faisal Khan

The car will come soon, they are having production capacity restrictions but bookings should open early next year.

  • SHARIF

    Dear Faisal Bhai,

I got delivery of my FORD ECOSPORT PETROL AT on September 2nd, i used to get average of 7.5 to 8 kmpl
    now at 2700km i get 8.8kmpl Avg.
My first servicing is due so after first servicing will i get 14 to 16 kmpl AVG as they claimed before.

Please advice, or else should i convert it into CNG after a year if it gives less than 10 kmpl.
    Thank you.

    • http://www.motorbeam.com/ Faisal Khan

You won’t get 14-16 but 10 max, as we have said in our EcoSport AT review.

      CNG not advisable.

  • Omprakash

  • Swati

    Hi Faisal,

We are planning to buy a compact SUV and we are very confused between Duster and Ecosport. We stay in Kolkata with quite bad road conditions and our monthly run is around 700-800 kms. Which from the two would you suggest? As Diesel versions have better mileage as read in your reviews above, should we go for them? How about going for AT versions? I guess diesel variants do not have automatic versions. Would really appreciate your inputs.

    • http://www.motorbeam.com/ Faisal Khan

      Swati, get the Duster diesel.

  • Rajesh

    Hi Faisal,
I booked my Ecosport 1.5P Ambiente model in the month of June and yet to receive the car. I booked it from a multi-dealer here in Mumbai and its been said that the car has stopped its production at the moment and will resume by February 2014. Do u have any clue if its true?

    • http://www.motorbeam.com/ Faisal Khan

No, production hasn’t been stopped and Ford dealers aren’t getting the car, what multi-car dealers will get?

  • Paras

    Hey Faisal..!
Could you please suggest that is 9,39,080 worth for buying Ecosport (On-road price for Ford EcoSport 1.0L EcoBoost Petrol Titanium (O) in Noida) . Becoz many suggested that its a small car but with lots of features. And if I go to a lower model i.e, Trend can you pls give your review on it.
    Thanks ! In advance !!

    • http://www.motorbeam.com/ Faisal Khan

Yes, it’s totally worth it. Get the EcoBoost if you like driving.

  • Dr. Darpesh Gohel

hi faisal, excellent feedback on ecosport. my running is around 350-400 kms/month only; however, i want to buy diesel car hence, booked a ecosport ambiente, diesel version and will get delivery around march 2014. from ur reviews, i come to know that in less running petrol car is more preferred over diesel. is there any big loss that i have to face in form of maintenance? pl suggest. i took decision considering 16kmpl average of diesel version and over five years cost difference between petrol and diesel version; i also consider the difference of price of petrol vs diesel as well as total cost of purchase. i found that diesel version will be cheaper then petrol version after five years………pl. advice me on my decision. as yet i have not get delivery i may change order to petrol from diesel by rebooking. i may have to loose some cancellation charges around 7-8000rs. and may be few month more waiting time………can i get fitted roof rail in ambiente diesel version afterward?

    • http://www.motorbeam.com/ Faisal Khan

Darpesh, don’t worry, you have made a good decision. Most accessories can be fitted by the dealer or after market. Don’t cancel, get the diesel.

      • Dr. Darpesh Gohel

thanks for your prompt feedback on my confusion. i will share my experience after getting the ecosport ambiente diesel. after reading so much about Ecosport, i m eagerly waiting to ride on my first completely self owned car……….again thanks for this blog.

        • http://www.motorbeam.com/ Faisal Khan

You are welcome Darpesh. Do share your ownership experience with us.

Earlier I’ve choosed Ford Eco sport Diesel version but changed my decision to go for Petrol Version as my usage is less than 300 per month. I’m opting for 1.5 AMBIENT MT Petrol Variant.. As per earlier review milege is 9-10 KM/L ..My concern it to know the mileage in City Traffic ( Hyd )..Do u have any idea regarding mileage for 1.5 AMBIENT MT Petrol Variant..If the Mileage is above 12 then i will go for Eco sport else go for Maruthi Ritz or Swift ….kindly waiting for the suggestions…Thx and Reg Om

Hi faisal, i am planning to buy a new car with a budget of around 5 to 7 lakhs. I am confused between
Swift vxi and ford ecosport ambiente. i will make it run rougly around 400 km/month only.more interested in
ecospirt but read above that petrol version give max 10 only and looking its long waiting time little worried.what will u suggest.i live in delhi .deisel price will be more for my pocket.one more ques…is ford parts are costlier
    at the time of maintainance/repair….thanks

  • Sumanta

    Hi Faisal,
I want to buy an ecosport petrol (ambient – base version) . I want the looks of titanium one. So i have planned to do some adjustments. I will add roof rails , fog light , alloy wheel, colored ORVM and chrome grill in the front. Everything is okay but i am not sure about the chrome grill fitting in the front. Some guys from showroom is saying it is possible in ambient but rest of them are saying it can only be fitted in trend. Would you please put some light on this.

    • http://www.motorbeam.com/ Faisal Khan

It might not be easy to fit on base due to the grille and would involve higher costs.

  • sariputra mutsuddi

    Hi Faisal….

Thanks for this very buyer friendly review….it felt like a suggestion from a close friend…..and u have answered all queries…..god knows how u manage……now for my query……mine is going to be a company buy…..and the 1.5 l ambiente is the only one that fits into my eligibility……avrg running 1000 plus in a month in kolkata though a lot of it wud be in newtown which is more noida like in terms of road……currently drive swift vxi and really love the feel of the drive with its easy maneouverability and pick up and road grip….since i cant alter the variant, plan to get alloy wheels, chrome grille, body colored ovrms, rear parking sensor, rpm meter, rear power windows separately……am i thinking on right track if i book 1.5 l ambiente? Any other options below 6.25 lac ex showroom!

    • http://www.motorbeam.com/ Faisal Khan

EcoSport seems the best option currently. Also the mods you planned can be done without any issue.

  • balaji

Hey faisal..u are doing a good job…I have booked a ecosport AT will get delivery by mwrch 2014, now I have come across not so good reviews of the AT ( powershift) both in city and highway..please put some light on how the petrol AT engine and gearbox behaves ?.

    • http://www.motorbeam.com/ Faisal Khan

Have you read our AT review?

  • Sajesh babu

Hi Faisal , greetings . I brought Ecosport 1.5 petrol Trent model. I car having very slow pickup at de first gear.i can feel that the power is very less at the first gear. Is it common problem.pls reply

    • http://www.motorbeam.com/ Faisal Khan

Yes it doesn’t have much power but issue should be resolved a bit post first service.

  • Sijuraj

I am using Ecosport Titanium 1.5 (P) Manual and covers 3500 km. I feel very much comfort in city driving or driving through plane area but feel very difficult to manage a hill road . If the speed of the vehicle is very low even in the first gear I feel very much trouble to manage a slope with full load. rpm is not increasing even pressing accelerator full. I use half clutch to manage this difficulty. But I am sure this will lose my clutch disc. What to do? Is it a general problem of Ecosport 1.5 L (P) model. I didn’t experience this type of problems in my previous vehicle Aulto.

    • http://www.motorbeam.com/ Faisal Khan

It will wear out your clutch over long time but there is no other way to tackle a slope, you are doing it right.

  • amit

My running is on average 550 kms per month. Except for highway my daily running will be at max 5 per day. should i go for petrol trend?

    • http://www.motorbeam.com/ Faisal Khan

Yes go for petrol, diesel makes no sense for your kind of running.

  • pavan Jain

Hi Faisal well our monthly running would be around less than 300km . My first preference is comfort on both front and rear side, little bit good ground clearance and joyful driving. Confused whether to buy Swift, Toyota’s liva, Honda City petrol or Ford ecosports. Budget in between 7 to 9 lacs . Faisal waiting for u r precious advice.

    • http://www.motorbeam.com/ Faisal Khan

I suggest you get the EcoSport but waiting is quite long.

  • adil muhammad

Faisal, which engine better tivct or ecoboost
    I ordered 1.0 titanium (O) on september
Now they are saying that the ford is not making ecoboost version

    • http://www.motorbeam.com/ Faisal Khan

EcoBoost is better and who is saying Ford not making EcoBoost?

  • Pranav

    Hello faisal,
we are confused about our first car (we have second hand maruti 800 which we are using for over 8-9 years)
our budget is 8 lakhs and i have short listed ford ecosport 1.5p titanium mt,new honda city s or sv(which of them is adviseable with of only automatic air control between those two),volkswagen polo gt tdi, verna fluidic 1.6 petrol …. my height is 6ft ,and we are family of 5 which car would you suggest with decent fuel consumption and a sporty performance car as all of the above are above 100ps
i also want good features and value for money car and also suggest some other car you feel i would opt for and my running is about 20kms daily and one trip of about 1500km in two moths.and what would be the waiting period for ecosport if i book it in march would i get its delivery till april?

    • http://www.motorbeam.com/ Faisal Khan

EcoSport waiting is a lot so unless you can wait, no point considering it. City seems the best bet for you.

  • visu

    Hi faisal,
thank you very much for your reviews, I want to buy a car. I have two options. One is swift vdi and ford ecosport diesel. My budget is 8 lacks. mileage wise which one is the best. If ecosport will give 18kmpl on highway then I will go for it. Also let me know the deisel basic versions. Please reply. I am in very big confusion on these two.

    thanks

    • http://www.motorbeam.com/ Faisal Khan

The Swift will give you more mileage and at your budget, you can get the ZDi variant. EcoSport has long waiting and worst still, the base variant fitting in your budget comes devoid of any features.

  • Dinesh

    Hi faisal,
i have booked ecosport trend diesel on 28 feb 2014,
and its shocking……..that i get call yesterday form ford dealer, he says your car is ready for delivery
wow this is a amazing, i cant belive that my dream car ready for me.
    thanks for your review.

  • Subodh

    Hi Faisal ,
I m very confused between Ecosport petrol & Toyota cross ( launch in may 14). My budget is 7 lac.
    Pls solve my problem.
    Thanks

    • http://www.motorbeam.com/ Faisal Khan

      Get the EcoSport, eyes closed.

  • meher

hi , planning for third car after experiencing maruti 800dx & esteem lxi , avg running per month 800 – 1000kms . Liked ecosport by features , trend petrol version is available right now .Worried about mileage & the talk about maintainance of ford cars is that it is very high compared to Suzuki cars . In a fix , whether to go for ecosport trend petrol version or swift dzire diesel version , budget 8-9lakhs .Main worry is about mileage & future maintainance charges . looking forward for your advice .

  • vroom..

Hi faisal… i am a figo petrol owner i used to get 9-10kmpl. Now the car hss cloked 15k+ kms.Now i know the ideal rpm to drive the car and how to extract maximum mileage out of the car i also believe that mileage has improved after 2 services. My doubt is will i be having the same experience with eco 1.5petrol.? highway mileage 12kmpl is pathetic can we extract atleast 15kmpl in decent highways about 70kmph after run in peroid or will the mileage remail at 12kmpl throught?.Can u Please comnent on back seat comfort compared to polo?

    • http://www.motorbeam.com/ Faisal Khan

With 70 km/hr speed, you can expect 14 km/l easily.

  • Rohit

    Hi Faisal,

I’m in a flux to choose between Honda Amaze Petrol 3rd Variant OR Ford EcoSport 1.5litre Ambiente Petrol ?
I’m buying it through my Company & both these models are just fitting-in my Entitlement Limits.

My running is going to range between 750-1000 km per month ; off which nearly 700 km would be in Pune City Driving. Please advise which Car I should opt for ?

  • amit

Between Toyota Etios Cross and Ford Ecosport which do you think is better??

    • http://www.motorbeam.com/ Faisal Khan

      EcoSport.

      • amit

could you tell me the better facts please?

  • girish

    Hi Faisal,
Very nice review. One of my friends using Amaze insists me to go for Amaze and not for Eco sport 1.5 P because of engine. However my avg. driving is 400kms/month and I would like to buy SUV over sedan as I already have etios. Advise if the engine difference between the two is so much that I should not buy Eco sport.
    Rgds.

    • http://www.motorbeam.com/ Faisal Khan

I actually like the Ford engine, it’s more refined.

  • amit

i have been waiting for eco-sports trend for 3 months now. i heard toyota etios cross is coming in next month. i can get it within few days of launching. so should i go for etios cross and cancel eco-sports booking?

  • Kumar

    Hi Faisal,

I’m confused between i10 Grand AT Asta Petrol OR Ford EcoSport 1.5litre Ambiente Petrol ?
I’m buying it through my Company & both these models are just fitting-in my Entitlement Limits.

My running is going to range between 750-1000 km per month ; off which nearly 700 km would be in Hyderabad City Driving. Please advise which Car I should opt for ?

    • http://www.motorbeam.com/ Faisal Khan

      You should get the EcoSport.

      • Kumar

Thankyou Faisal for your quick response!
Other question: can you please let me know the maintenance cost for this vehicle. Came to know Ford vehicles are expensive compared to Maruthi/Hundai cars.

        • http://www.motorbeam.com/ Faisal Khan

Nope, not really. That’s a myth. Ford cars are no longer expensive to upkeep.

          • Kumar

            Thanks Faisal.
            Q) Can you please let us know if we can add the ABS to the ES Ambient Petrol later on like after 1 year of purchase of the vechile from Ford Delaer or outside?

  • Yash Kapoor

Hi Fasal. Just the review i was looking for.
Im confused between the petrol base and diesel base model. my monthly running would be something around 850Kms. in which ill run for 400 Kms in a single stretch. Im thinking to go with the petrol but if i buy a diesel would it make more difference? I have heard that diesel cars require more and frequent running. in short. if a diesel car is idle for much time it is bad. Is it true ?

    • http://www.motorbeam.com/ Faisal Khan

No, diesel car left idle will do no harm. Still, get the petrol version.

      • Yash Kapoor

But my question is how much running is advisable if u go for diesel. My problem is in the city i can surely go for petrol but i will be having some long rides in almost each month around 400-500 Kms
That will surely burn a big hole in the pocket. if going for petrol

P.S- Bad thing is in my area Ecosport bookings are closed atleast for 4-5 Months im not buying it

        • http://www.motorbeam.com/ Faisal Khan

At least you should do 1500 kms a month for diesel.

  • Ronak

Bro which one is better in petrol amaze or ecosport…?

  • Ajay Pandey

    Hi Faisal.
Nice review. Please suggest me which one better a ford ecosport petrol or Duster petrol. I’m very much confused between these cars. Please consider all the points and then reply but soon.
    Thanx in advance.

    • http://www.motorbeam.com/ Faisal Khan

EcoSport petrol is better than Duster petrol.

  • Gavin

    Hi faisal,

Nice review, I have booked 1.5 disel ambiente, wants to know if I can fit cooled glovebox, ABS, REAR VIPER and rear defoger and if yes what would be the price, cause right now I don’t have the budget to go for the trend diesel, also if there would arise any warranty issues, do reply and thanks in advance…. and do keep up the nice work.

    • http://www.motorbeam.com/ Faisal Khan

Nope, most of those things can’t be fitted.

  • angu

Dont buy ecosports as it is a pseudo SUV and not a full suv so what to spend 1million on this pseudo suv

    • http://www.motorbeam.com/ Faisal Khan

Tell me one real SUV for around that price?

  • Dipin

Hai Faisal, I drove my new Ecosport 1.5 Petrol Trend around 3150 KM….Happy with the mileage, am getting an avrage of 12 KM /PL….at a speed of 70 to 75 KM/PH.

    • http://www.motorbeam.com/ Faisal Khan

That’s good mileage, how is the overall experience?

      • Dipin S Nair

Hai Faisal…Overall experience is Good am satisfied with the Engine performance during city drive …it doesn’t offer instant response during Highway drive as you said in your review..any how i prefer to drive normally at a speed of 70 to 80 KMPH…. Suspension & Interior Superb.

Thanks to FORD for making such a wonderful SUV.

  • angu

I read in many reviews plastic qualty is not good it ford want to give us suv thev should give us suv of top notch quality suv as its top variant cost million rupee

    • http://www.motorbeam.com/ Faisal Khan

Which is the cheapest SUV in India today?

  • hemant puri

    Hello Faisal,
Thanksfor your review om ecosport petrol and futthur detailed answers to queries. Quite helpful.
I am 6’6″ and struggling to find a car i fit in properly.
After long search i find a solution in ecosport mainly due to spacious interiors and tilt-telescopic steering. Now i need to finalize between diesel ambient and petrol trend. I livein bangalore and present running is 500km. However i am expecting upto 1000 soon. Alsoi it can get higher to 1300km in 2 years.
I want to know differences between petrol and diesel 1.5 ltrs engine. Petrol mileage seems very low. How about other differences in engine performance like pickup, vibrations, running experience, maintenance etc. I test drove diesel and felt that pickup is low for diesel variant.

Biggest problem is that petrol verwion is not available for test drive. Moreover sales team is not providing any input and say that they themselves havent driven petrol… quite amusing. Could be company strategy or facts … but its difficult to figure out.

Whatis your advise considerin 5 years running and fact that this my first car, to be driven mainly in bangalare.

    • http://www.motorbeam.com/ Faisal Khan

The diesel performs better than petrol so if you found diesel performance inadequate, you should consider the EcoBoost.

  • Shafi

Hi Faisal, I have booked an Eco Sport Trend. Is it possible to change the tyre size? Can I replace the present 15″ disc with 16″ alloys? The salesman told it is not possible. Is it because there could be some guarantee issues?

  • Ritwik

    Hi Faisal,

Really happy to read your review.
I am a lil disappointed to know that the petrol 1.5 is not good to drive and everyone is asking me to go for diesel.

I need a good fun to drive vehicle with zippy performance.

You are the expert and you drove the petrol 1.5 also. Please let me know whether I should go for the diesel.

    • http://www.motorbeam.com/ Faisal Khan

Yes, the diesel is much better.

  • Ritwik

So the petrol is very sluggish to drive? Please dont mind as for the diesel I have to spend almost 2 lakh more.
Thats the reason I want to be very sure? Is the petrol that bad to drive that one would repent buying it?

    • http://www.motorbeam.com/ Faisal Khan

Nope, it’s not bad but not very good either.

      • Ritwik

Thanks Faisal. Keep up the great work. :)

        • Ritwik

Faisal, my friend, I more question.

How would be the Tata Safari Dicor 2.2 VTT as its now available at the same price range of a top end Ecosport.
I am also aware of some complaints about tata safari also, however those are from 2012.

          How is the vehicle currently?

          Appreciate your help.

Mileage of all trims of the EcoSport will be same when the engine is the same. Which variant are you exactly considering?

    Dear Faisal,
Gone through all the questions & your reply..
    Appreciate your effort.
    Few doubts from me
1.Heard that Ford has called back ecosports initially for somme issues. Is that issues resolved permanently ?
2.Dealer says,Intial Ecosports have milage issues & Presently 12-14 Average is getting in city drive.. is it true ?

    Hi Faisal,
Excellent job done by you & Team Motorbeam.. you have answered almost all the queries. Really appreciable work, keep it up dude.
I have just booked my Ecosport Trend (petrol) .My avg monthly running will be around 600 to 750 Kms. After reading your blog i felt that I have made no mistake by selecting Petrol version. Could you please tell me at what speed to drive at which gear for better millage and engines life. (I usually drive at 2nd-3rd gear in heavy city traffic.and shift gears often in my maruti alto)

Thanks Piyush. For the initial kms, keep speeds below 80 km/hr and post that you can drive however you like without worrying one bit.
