Hyundai Grand i10 vs Competitors

There are only limited number of hatchbacks that catch our eyes at first sight, coming down to that category, the all new Hyundai Grand i10 is going to be a perfect eye catchy hatchback. The much talked Korean company believes to have a small gap in between the current i10 and i20 and that gap is being filled in by its yet another hatchback, called the new Grand i10 that makes its first world appearance in India. Beginning with the first impressions, the i10 before started a new phase in the global innings for Hyundai with a boost up in the field of trendy hatchbacks. The Hyundai Grand i10 fulfilling these remedies of the company also develops an improvement in their market share, changing the customer view on the brand dramatically.

Having a closer look at the Grand i10, you can definitely notice that it is a longer version of the present i10 and this second generation i10 will be launched at the Frankfurt Motor Show which is going to held by next week. Attracting by its fluidic design, Hyundai is not going to offer the Grand i10 to the European markets, instead it will be getting a smaller version of the new i10. The new Grand i10 is not going to replace its predecessor, instead it is going to co-exist with the current i10. Bracing out the attractive looks, the Grand i10 seems to be somewhat less fluidic than the i20 but it’s really better than the cheaper Eon perhaps with fewer cuts and bulges.

The exteriors rolling onto a new phase, the first impression on the Hyundai Grand i10 will make you feel like, it has that looks of a mature hatchback with noticeably restrained styling developed by Hyundai standards. However the fluidic look is one of the main attractions, you will never miss the styling strides waving through, like the hexagonal grilles and the slot like panel above it. The newly developed design of the headlamps seems to be impressive and the fog lamps adding that extra spectacular look from the front. The windshield running above is smooth and curvy starting from the end of the strappy hood, the side mirrors are smoothly chromed to get a classier look. Besides, the side view of the grand i10 makes you feel like starring at a sports hatchback, moreover the doors seemed to have an extended look which will clearly show you an extended hatchback.

Sliding around with the side view you can see and additional black coloured strap muscle that extends through the base of the doors, this strap muscle paves the way for an additional sporty look from the side angle. The windows also seem to be promising with edgy finish and classy look. Moving on to the rear end, you can notice the Hyundai’s fluidic design philosophy on the edgy tail lamps. The unique detailing on the tail lamps gives the Grand i10 a trendy sportier look from the back as well. Below the cuts and curves on the back, the exhaust tip is slightly visible below the rear bumper. Running below further, the 14-inch alloys portray a unique sporty touch on the wheels. Totally the exterior looks of the Grand i10 is attractive and eye catching and it shows the efforts of Hyundai’s dedicated design engineers and simply to say, the Hyundai Grand i10 is specially made for India.

Opening the door, the crispy interiors come into limelight. The interior cabin is clean and crispy, only the design layout of the dashboard seems to be a bit familiar with, other than that every features seem to be extremely new by themselves. The interiors are not really chromed with royal looks, but its quality of the matt-finished plastic feels good and gives you an above average look for the budget vehicle. None of the interior features match with the old i10, except that one dashboard and the position of the gear-shift lever. The dashboard is black, added with large beige at the centre of the dashboard like other Hyundai cars. The door handles seems to be a get-alike from the fluidic Verna and also the top end models of the Grand i10 are presented with chrome covered handles.

A start/stop system, a similar feature in the i20 is offered with the top end variants of the Grand i10. The music system in the center is amazing and has an inbuilt memory upto 1 GB, also the steering wheel gets integrated audio and horn controls. The dashboard has two large AC vents on either sides of the platform. The highlight of the rear end is focused on the rear seat. It has a large amount of space for legroom. The medium sized front seats are also well placed. Well, in overall the interior is comfortable and eye catchy and there is an enormous amount of boot space that is sufficient for a hatchback of this size.

Moving deeper into the heart of the Hyundai Grand i10. The petrol engine is a 1.2-litre Kappa engine featuring VTVT technology. This engine produces 83 PS of peak power, mated with a 5-speed manual gearbox and also an automatic transmission (to be available later). Turning back to the diesel engine of the Grand i10, it is provided with an 1.1-litre U2 CRDi diesel engine. This motor is smallest diesel engine by Hyundai and also a second generation of its class. The newly improve engine especially blows out with low noise and also low level vibrations. The car seems to handle well except a bit of body roll when thrown into corners but it is still so much better than the current i10.

The Hyundai Grand i10 has a length of 3765 mm, width of 1660 mm and height of 1520 mm. Thus in terms of size, the Grand i10 is smaller than the Maruti Suzuki Ritz and Ford Figo. However it has a wheelbase of 2425 mm, which is bigger than the Ritz but smaller than the Figo. The boot capacity is a generous 252-litres, which is again bigger than the Ritz (236-litres) but smaller than the Figo (284-litres).

Being so Grand, the Grand i10 has more than a couple of competitors, so lets explore the outlook of the competitors.

Maruti Suzuki Ritz Facelift

Maruti Suzuki Ritz – The closest competitor to the Grand i10, the Ritz boasts of better engines as the diesel powerplant has good amount of performance for both city and highway while the Grand i10′s motor is more suited to city driving. The Grand i10 is more frugal though. The Ritz doesn’t have the features of the Grand i10 but being a bigger car with better chassis tuning, the Ritz handles better and can be quite fun to drive too.

Nissan Micra Active

Nissan Micra Active – The new Micra Active is developed with a redesigned front and rear. The performance tuning and the weight reduction of the vehicle contribute to fuel efficiency of 19.49 km/l. Being one of the strong competitors of the Hyundai Grand i10, the new Micra Active is stuffed with some interesting features like airbags and ABS+EBD, which makes it a feature rich model. The new Micra has been introduced with a low cost of Rs. 3.50 lakhs (ex-showroom, Delhi).

Ford Figo Celebration Edition

Ford Figo – The Ford Figo is one go-kart, it handles beautifully and is easily the best value for money driver’s car around. However the Figo does have the same level of fit and finish as the Grand i10 and neither does it come with the level of equipment Hyundai offers. The petrol engine of the Figo lacks grunt and doesn’t deliver on mileage either. However when it comes to diesel engines, the Figo’s motor doesn’t loose breath that easily and can do highway duties too. The Grand i10 is more suited to the city.

Verdict – The new Hyundai Grand i10 has more than a couple of rivals to compete with. Surviving this heavy competition in the Indian market is going to be real tough but still the Grand i10 has more features and style added to it with a good package; this unique key features will definitely help the Grand i10 stay on the most valuable place in the Indian market and also it has is own soft corner among the Indian hatchback fans and budget car buyers. Totally the Hyundai Grand i10 sets to prove ‘Made For India’ fame on every aspect.

Very nice unbiased comparison .Hyundai has to work more to challenge the K series , Multijet and Duratorq engines. But as a low end diesel power, i10 grand can be only compared to Beat 1L diesel engine.
I am curious about i10 or beat- which diesel is better.

Indulal, Buy Gi10 – Hyundai will not phase it out for next 15 years and won’t change it a bit. So you are covered from all those risks.

Test drive Brio, Ritz, swift and i10 grand for a petrol model.
If you need a diesel pick anything from Punto, Ritz, Figo , Sail and i10 grand diesel.
Also check whether the upcoming Jazz’s price list.
I found Punto, a best diesel hatchback.
Feel your heartbeat after TD.Good luck.

I read evrywhr it is 3765mm in length. 1520mm in height. 256l of boot space. Why its different here?
I think u meant Figo does not have…
Figo is big but interior style and esp plastic quality is cheaper than alto.

No comparison of Amaze with i10 because i10 is way out of the league. Amaze can be compared only to Dzire, Linea and etios. I will compare i10 diesel with Beat diesel or Micra diesel.

I own an I10 and believe me I feel exposed at 90, as if I don’t have anything around me and at 50 on the sharp turns I apply brakes to avoid falling off the bridge. It touched a cycle rickshaw once and the bumper came out and the fender was dug inside when I saw a few men standing taking support of the car. The dashboard can’t hold anything, there is no bluetooth, the first time I adjusted the high beam, the rolling ball got pushed inside, the rear demistifier never worked and while installing rear view parking sensor, the rear bumper got squeezed. In 2 years I ah e got the steering opened twice as it started rattling on high speeds and believe it or not, you cannot get a handrest for I10 from the open market or authorised showrooms or accessories shops.
Its a toy car with gadgets but no weight for stability or safety.

Buddy, I was going to book this car in a week. But now I am having a second thought, after your comment. Definitely with 14″ tyres i10 Grand should have better ride than i10 but the build quality won’t be quite different. If Hyundai’s are so delicate then I won’t go for i10G as roads around my area are pathetic.

For some couple of added features in Grand i10 if we compare it with other hatch backs like Alto K10 why should I pay another 2L+ for this and if I really ready to shed that amount of money on Grand i10 Asta I would prefer to go with some Sedan in that case for more elegance. Don’t know what Hyundai wants to prove with this new launch.

  • Deepak September 12, 2013, 11:44 am

Abhishek – I am not sure why you should compare Alto K10 with Gi10. Both cars belong to different segment.
I booked a Gi10 Sportz petrol and I took the decision after Test driving many cars including Swift, Ritz, Brio, Liva and I am sure I made a correct decision. The interiotrs are amazing and the features that this car is offering for the price tag, believe me no other car would be ofering.
I recommend Gi10 for people with budget 5-6L.

          • Faisal Khan September 21, 2013, 1:08 am

Then opt for the car with a bigger boot but you can always use the rear seat if your travelling three.

  • Sid September 13, 2013, 2:53 pm

Which is better car between Ford Figo ZXI/Titanium and Grand i10 Sportz? I could get the Figo Titanium at the price of Gi10 Sportz. But the only -ve point i see currently is figo gives a mileage of 11-13 km/litre in city and Gi10 might give around 13-14 km/lit in city based on ARAI 18.5 km/litre. So which is better car?
Does ABS matters when driving below 80km/hr on highways?

    Reply
    • Faisal Khan September 14, 2013, 1:10 am

Sid, ABS is always good and its not only for highway use but also a boon in the city. Petrol, don’t even look at Figo, get the Grand i10.

Any ideas when the Honda Jazz would be launched in the Indian market? And do you think it would be priced around 6-7.5 lacs on road for petrol? (Guess if you have to) Just to make me feel better for now.. :P

I was about to book petrol grand i10 Asta model, but somehow I’m not 100% convinced. I want to wait for the launch of Honda Jazz. What do you suggest?

This information is for all the new buyers who are planing a new diesel car. I bought a beat diesel on May 6th, 2013 and since then driving it for at least 60 kms daily. This car is giving me an average of 17.50 -18.50 (oil not changed)in bumper to bumper traffic in Delhi wherein I drive it at the speed of 90-100kms/hour with 100% ac on. So, people who wants to spend less and wants a durable proven one cylinder short multijet enjine fitted car then buy beat without any second thoughts. Recently, I test drove grand i10 diesel but ended up buying an i20 diesel not because i10 grand has any problem but then i20 is way above when it comes to cruise especially on highways yet this car gives you an amazing average of 18-19 km/litre. Hats off to hyundai for designing a car like i10 grand. I’d say that if anybody has a budget of 6.5-7.5 lacs then instead of buying i10 grand with more features, instead buy a swift diesel or my personal advice is to buy an i20 diesel. My question from Mr. Faisal is that how come an i20 diesel can give me the same average as beat wherein it has got a heavy crdi 1.4 cc engine? Will the average of my beat improve after the third service wherein the oil will get changed?

Mileage is dependant on various factors. Some cars have more advanced engines.

The mileage you are getting is good but should improve once oil is changed.

    Hi Faisal,
Could you please advice – I want to buy a petrol car and Initially I shortlisted VV Polo and Grand i10 but once I saw Fiat Grand Punto my heart is putting pressure on my mind to go for Punto just because of its stunning look and heavy body though with the expense of power and millage. Could you please advice me which one to go for. Also, I’m curious to know the Fiat’s expansion plans in India. Will it be viable to choose Punto ?

Ashish, don’t even think of buying a petrol Punto, instead get the Linea T-Jet. Else best bet is to get the Polo 1.2 TSI.

I would drive the car for 50-60 km daily of which two third would be on a highway and the remaining in the city with a long trip once after two months . I want good mileage. Boot space is no issue. On an average I would drive the car 2000-2200 km per month. I want low maintainance cost. I am confused as punto I am getting on road 5.5 and i10 grand on road 6.48 so suggest me out of the two.

Don’t go for petrol Punto. If you want petrol get the Grand i10, diesel you get Punto.

    Hi Faisal
I am looking for a perfect city hatchback as well as weekend driving near pune areas like lonavala, khandala, and other near highways , I finalised earlier last year for purchasing of Honda Brio Petrol SMT , later on hold my decision due to back glass mirror safety , I took test drive of BRIO 2-3 times and always found sheer pleasure in driving the same , later on after launch of Grand I10 i took the TD , but found the same not so comfortable while driving , due to hardness of the steering and also i found a lot of jerks and noise while driving petrol version ….is HONDA BRIO is on my mind i think, my priorities are long durability , nice interiors, good brand value , best fuel economy and safety —HONDA brio meets all requirments although not rich featured as Grand I10- and boot space i can compromise , but feel very small when rear passenger looks into the back in Grand it is not like that..confused a lot and not able to decide ,,can u give some other good options with 5.50- 5.75 Lac budget wid good boot and sheer pleasure of driving with nice interiros and good FE

    Thanks a lot in advance

    Hi Faisal,

I am confused between Honda Brio and Hyundai Grand I10. I would drive very sparsely probably 30-40 KM per week, mostly city driving. I’m a new driver and have driving experience on Maruti 800. Please advise which one should I choose. Safety and ease of driving are my prime priorities.

    Thanks,

Any particular reason why Brio? My only concern was the boot space in the Brio as compared to the Grand i10.

Aditya, actually both are very good cars. Since it’s your second car, I assumed boot space wouldn’t be a very important criteria for your purchase.

Thanks Faisal, boot space is important as my wife will be using the vehicle and would take it around shooping + we have a kid whose straller would be required always..

Then opt for the car with a bigger boot but you can always use the rear seat if your travelling three.

IT’S ALWAYS A DILEMMA TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT CAR,
I WOULD CHOOSE BRIO AMONG ALL SUB 5-6 LACS,

GRAND I10 IS A FEATURE REACH CAR BUT THE DIFFERENCE CAN BE EXPLAINED BELOW

A SKODA OF 20 LACS WILL GIVE U ALL FEATURES AND A BMW OF 21 LACS MIGHT NOT GIVE U ALL THAT 20 LACS SKODA GIVES BUT STEEL SOME PREFERS BMW WITH LESS FEATURES GOOD BRAND VALUE ANF FOR RIDING AND HANDLING

Dhiren, the person asked me about which car is better, the Brio is better to drive, I seldom use the boot so for me personally, the Brio is what I would pick, only because it’s more fun to drive. Since he wanted the boot, I told him to opt for the car with a bigger boot, which the Grand i10 is.
