Mahindra has launched the Quanto compact SUV in India right now. We are at the launch and have already got our hands on the brochure. The Mahindra Quanto is powered by a 1.5-litre, 3-cylinder, mCR100 diesel engine with Micro Hybrid technology. The 1493cc motor uses a twin-stage turbo to produce 100 BHP of peak power at 3750 RPM and 240 Nm of peak torque between 1600-2800 RPM. This engine is mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox. The Quanto has disc brakes at the front and drum brakes at the rear. The Quanto’s suspension is an independent double wishbone, coil springs with anti-roll bar at the front and five-bar link coil springs at the rear.
The Mahindra Quanto has a turning radius of 5.4-metres with a ground clearance of 180 mm. It is a 7-seater (5+2) and runs on 205/65/R15 tubeless tyres with the top-end C8 variant getting mini XUV wheels. The fuel tank capacity is 55-litres and weight is 1640 kgs. Mahindra has loaded the Quanto with almost all the features found on the Xylo including ABS, EBD, dual airbags, reverse assist system, 2-din audio system, granite themed dashboard, digital drive assist system, digital immobilizer, rear wiper and washer. There are no steering mounted audio controls or leather seats. The Mahindra Quanto returns an ARAI certified mileage of 17.21 km/l. The Quanto is available in 6 colors – black, brown, beige, red, silver and white.
The Mahindra Quanto is available in four variants – C2, C4, C6 and C8. The base C2 variant seems to be targeted at the taxi segment as it doesn’t get body colored bumpers, grill and door handle. Nor does it get spare wheel cover and side/rear foot steps. The top end model is loaded though and even the C6 variant has decent list of equipment. The Quanto has 5 bottle holders and 6 magazine pockets. Both the C6 and C8 variants get ABS, EBD, front fog lamps, electrically adjustable rear view mirrors, puddle lamps on side footsteps, fiery black painted front grille, foldable snack tray, driver under seat storage and side body moulding. Micro Hybrid technology is available on C4, C6 and C8 variants.

Price?
harish September 20, 2012 at 12:49 pm
they should have changed the front design…mileage is too less..
Ysak September 20, 2012 at 12:54 pm
waitng 4 the price announcement
Faisal Khan September 20, 2012 at 1:00 pm
Press conference is on. Prices are not announced yet, the company is still talking about the Quanto. Will update prices as soon as they are revealed.
S Pani September 20, 2012 at 1:12 pm
Usual marketing talk going on it seems.
Quantum doesnt mean “more” at all. It is Latin for quantity, which is neither less nor more. Quantum is the source word for the english word “quantity”.
On the other hand, the word quantum in modern sense is commonly associated with “Quantum Physics”, which refers to the physics of the smallest particles that can exist by themselves.
Leaving alone all this marketing crap, the Quanto seem to be exactly what it was called all this time, a mini-Xylo. They seem to have tried to share as much as possible between the two vehicles.
Question:
Are the last two seats of any real value?? And how is the leg-room in the 1st two rows, especially compared to the likes of the Ertiga and Duster??
Faisal Khan September 20, 2012 at 1:14 pm
Well S Pani, every company does do marketing talk, which has little or no relevance to the actual product.
The last row of seats are side facing jump seats. Will update on the space part soon.
ignatius September 20, 2012 at 1:19 pm
What will be the diff between C6 and C8 .. whether air bags are provided in C6 and C8 ?
Faisal Khan September 20, 2012 at 1:24 pm
Ignatius, C6 variant doesn’t have airbags, alloy wheels, reverse assist, which is present in the C8 variant.
Amish September 20, 2012 at 1:30 pm
Are the seven seats standard over all variants sir?
Faisal Khan September 20, 2012 at 1:32 pm
Yes Amish, 7-seats are standard across the range.
SK September 20, 2012 at 1:34 pm
Automatic climate control in any variant????
Faisal Khan September 20, 2012 at 1:36 pm
SK, nope. No automatic climate control.
S Pani September 20, 2012 at 1:34 pm
Things like the ridiculously low pricing, and boasting of facts like we spent so less on development like Mahindra always does, doesnt actually inspire confidence when you are hoping for better reliability from their products.
Why not price it 50,000 more, and then spend 30,000 of that in helping all suppliers improve their quality and still get more margin per car??
Faisal Khan September 20, 2012 at 1:38 pm
S Pani, I think they should have priced it Rs. 30,000/- lesser. Considering it is indeed a mini-Xylo. The base variant is absolutely short of equipment, not even body coloured bumpers, while top end goes above Rs. 8.8 lakhs (on-road, Mumbai).
S Pani September 20, 2012 at 1:52 pm
Looking at how the ridiculously cheap XUV500 has turned out to be a extremely unreliable vehicle, I am afraid the extreme cost cutting which is evident in the Quanto will lead to similar issues.
Not to mention the fact that this vehicle, which has been developed at less than 100cr has a brand new engine and transmission.
The extreme cost cutting is not very confidence inspiring to me.
Faisal Khan September 20, 2012 at 1:54 pm
S Pani, they did not have to develop the body, styling, interiors, etc. So that is why less investment, although time will tell how the engine is, but they seemed to have tested it extensively.
Amish September 20, 2012 at 2:09 pm
Absolutely right sir! They didnt have design anything, the body was same, the chassis were same so the money spent have been mostly spent on the Transmission and Engine so I dont think there is any need to worry.
S Pani September 20, 2012 at 2:00 pm
I would imagine, developing a new engine and transmission would be quite a good amount of investment too.
As for the testing part, they tested the XUV500 too extensively, and look at the kind of reliability we have got from it.
Faisal Khan September 20, 2012 at 2:03 pm
XUV has features which are a first for Mahindra, the Quanto has the same features of the Xylo, nothing new here. Engine reliability is something that needs to be seen though.
anurag September 21, 2012 at 12:58 pm
correct, they have very cleverly given all the important features on the top two models, and priced them steeply, because the target customer, will crave for those and will have togo for top two.One more thing ,this is not good for avehicle targeted as family vehicle ,to be also seen as taxi, this may have a negative impact. There are many examples for this theory in INDIA only.
ignatius September 20, 2012 at 1:47 pm
You have done wonderful job by updatin immeditely all details .. even top Auto magazines didnt update their website like this ..
Excepting a good review on this UV
and good comparo between Ertiga ,Duster and larger UV Xylo .. From You .. :)
Faisal Khan September 20, 2012 at 1:50 pm
Thanks a ton Ignatius. I am glad you liked it. Review as soon as possible ;-)
harish September 20, 2012 at 1:57 pm
After the successful journey with scorpio, xylo and xuv500, Quanto will be another successful mini SUV from M&M as they are experts in “Indian specific” SUV. I am confidently hope this vehicle will attract most of the middle class going for diesel hatchbacks being Quanto is value for money. This will compete directly with Forrestor and Ertiga and indirectly with WagonR, i20, Swift, Swift Dezire, Indigo. It will also help in differentiating Verito from other competing Sedans. It will make its own space in the market and will be difficult for others to compete with it – compared to Maruti SUV Ertiga in fuel ,comfort styling and pickup……
ashish September 20, 2012 at 4:30 pm
sir why u forgets bolero and nos it is on indian road
Amish September 20, 2012 at 2:15 pm
Sir,the pic updated right now is the original image or a rendered one?
Faisal Khan September 20, 2012 at 2:24 pm
It is the original one.
Vijay Tiwari September 20, 2012 at 2:45 pm
Did i read 4 wheel drive if available ,then 15″ wheels, well ambitious project i say,Duster bring on the 4×4 soon.
Faisal Khan September 20, 2012 at 2:49 pm
Vijay, yes 4-wheel drive in the works. Renault might bring in 4-wheel drive Duster, but it would be priced around Rs. 13 lakhs (ex-showroom).
Sidd September 20, 2012 at 2:55 pm
Aren’t they the old headlamps
Faisal Khan September 20, 2012 at 3:09 pm
Nope, they are new ones.
Prasadh September 20, 2012 at 3:06 pm
Hi Fas,
Whats the difference between C6 and C8 in terms of the features list?
Faisal Khan September 20, 2012 at 3:21 pm
Prasadh, airbags, alloy wheels and reverse assist.
S Pani September 20, 2012 at 3:10 pm
At least from the pics, the 1st two rows seem to have hatch like space. And the last row seems really cramped, probably wouldnt even want children to sit there.
Also from the pics, from each angle the car seem different to me. It seems as if the front end, the rear, the side-profile all belong to different cars. The looks are really really odd, and compared to the Duster and the Ecosport I will proabably even go to the extent of calling it ugly.
Pavan September 20, 2012 at 4:47 pm
Mr. Faisal Khan,
what is the total height of this vehicle? Is it same as in Xylo, which is very unstable at high speed.
s
S Pani September 20, 2012 at 4:51 pm
Yes, I too was meaning to ask this.
Was there any talk of changes to the suspension setup, compared to the Xylo which behaved like it was riding the waves of the ocean.
Faisal Khan September 20, 2012 at 5:36 pm
Guys, you will know soon, really soon ;-)
Pavan September 20, 2012 at 4:48 pm
when will be the booking start & the delivery schedule
Faisal Khan September 20, 2012 at 5:37 pm
Pavan, bookings already started for Rs. 20,000/-. Deliveries within 3 weeks.
Adi September 20, 2012 at 5:13 pm
Not too ugly looking… Faisal, how is the seating for the middle passenger in the centre row ? the floor hump i mean (leg room) ?
naveen September 20, 2012 at 6:24 pm
MB, awaiting for a comparo with d apt ERTIGA.. make it fast…!!!
Faisal Khan September 21, 2012 at 12:57 pm
Naveen, comparing with the Ertiga makes no sense as both cars are poles apart.
Robinsh September 20, 2012 at 6:41 pm
Seems good to touch the middle class family, still chances are building it would get some rejection due to the compact and rough design but people would prefer to buy this only because of it’s low price tag.
Thanks for update, looking for some more pics and videos.
sen September 20, 2012 at 7:19 pm
FUgly like its older brother.gonna need plenty of paintwork, graphics, led’s and alloys.price is good thou.didnt know xuv was a failure on reliability/mechanicals.
Prasadh September 20, 2012 at 8:11 pm
Fas, is there any probability that Ford does the same with the pricing of Ecosport? Price of the top-end diesel within 9-10 Lac!!!!!
Faisal Khan September 20, 2012 at 11:32 pm
Prasadh, well hopefully Ford should price the EcoSport very aggressively, though can’t say much at the moment.
Reddy2727 September 21, 2012 at 2:54 am
PIECE OF CRAP, built for 3rd world citizens…………………
rajan September 21, 2012 at 6:32 am

bksam October 9, 2012 at 2:18 pm
if headlamp is new then what is difference from that old one xylo, it’s completely look alike in the design of parata. if it keeps like price of suv then it must be fitted mini headlamp of xuv 500 for overall complementary looks. 100bhp,looks,ground clearance 90% seems perfect missing only from front end, shall change in near future…???
bksam October 9, 2012 at 2:31 pm
kindly inform when cidesi shall launch in india by fiat? what is its expected price? this is a car which is possibly best in this segment.. quanto is also one of them but let us see its practicality first as it fitted new engine…pliz….
