I bought the car in april 2010. It has done 3000+ kms(going for second service next week, but first oil change is only after 10000 km or 1 year whichever comes earlier). I am getiing 18+ kmpl with 25% A/C usage. I am using this car mostly in my village roads, most of the drive is in 4 th gear only(too many turns and twists). I am sure i will get 20+ in the highways. Power is little bit less, but considering the mileage, it is justified. It responds a little bit slowly in the beginning, then comes the power rush as some turbo kicks in. I am not facing any problem with rear space or boot space. We use the car only for travelling with the whole family. Good car with sporty and refrshing looks, build quality, cheap to own and maintain(it is a maruti!!!). Forget to mention, super ride quality and handling characteristics. Highly recommended…for youth..

Hi
I am having Astar from Jan 2009. Till date have never got mileage beyond 12 KM in City (with or without A/c) and 16 KM on Highways. The vehicle has problems with Reverse Gear, Suspension, Noise etc. Overall I feel the vehicle does not meet the Maruti Standards. Truly disappointed in opting for Astar

aqws,
Astar never had the seat height adjuster. Not sure which catalogue or website you looked at and believed. Did you buy a display model or the test car by any chance? It sounds like you got a half baked astar, I even wonder did you really own an astar – - just kidding. talk to your dealer about missing items or you should go for i10 instead. Dont waste your time!

I own a 2009 model about to clock 10,000kms.
it give 16kmpl with a/c. and 20kmpl strictly without a/c.
I use only high quality petrol. Hope these figures goes up after 10,000.

Guys, AStar definitely has lot of problems and coming to mileage, it is definitely not giving as marketed by MARUTI SUZUKI guys. My vehicle has the following problems
1) Mileage is around 12 kmpl in city without AC and with AC, 17kmpl with AC long drive (checked multiple times against FULL tank to FULL tank)
2) Have reverse gearing problem
3) Doesn’t move in 2nd gear, always have to come to 1st gear

Hi Friends,
I’ve now clocked 8000+ kms, and now some how it managed to get me an average of 18.5 kmpl (few times i got 20.4 kmpl).
In K series engines, we must use the gears STRICTLY according to the speed of vehicle (DO CHANGE TO FIRST GEAR IF THE SPEEDO NEEDLE FALLS BELOW 15 KMH.THERE IS NO OTHER WAY) . Usually we all use the gears in such a way so as to get max torque from engine at min rpm. even though we don’t do this on purpose, we all end up driving like this gradually; and this method gives max performance.
it appears tht K series engines are designed to drive in the “grandmas’ style”. i.e always keep the engine in high rpm. (remember how uncles drove the good old premier padmini). Trust me friends i got this 19+ kmpl when drove my a-star in “grandmas’ style”.
several time i changed the driving style, and observed tht the “grandmas’ style” gives max fuel efficiency. Though i hate to drive like tht, i’m forced by M/s IOC, BP, Reliance etc…!!!!!!

@Vishnu
hi.,.can u tell me the correct gear shifting speed.,.
i mean
1st-2nd gearshift after: 15kmph
2nd-3rd ” ” : ?
3rd-4th ” ” : ?
4th-5th ” ” : ?
i use to shift 1st to 2nd after 10kmhr.,.(nw let me try ur words)
and i use to downshift 5th to 4th if the speed is below 40kmhr.
ma average is 14.5-16.5kmpl(with negligible ac)
anybody please help me to know the correct gear upshifting and downshifting

Hi Kiran,
Am not an authoritative person to suggest a correct gear changing speed…. usually in conventional engines we shift to higher gears as soon as possible……. in a-star i follow the pattern detailed below (which gives me MAX Fuel Economy)
1st—–> 2nd – 20 kmh
2nd—–> 3rd – 25 to 30 kmh
3rd—–> 4th – 35 to 40 kmh
4th—–> 5th – 45 kmh
It’s not always possible to strictly observe this pattern, still can use as a guideline.
NEVER ride in 2nd gear below 20kmhr
AND
NEVER ride in 5th gear below 45kmhr
i suggest not to go up beyond 3rd gear in city traffic (always u’ll be riding around @ 30 – 40 kmh) if u want Max FE.
This is what i learned from my limited period encounter (8000 kms) with the K10 Engine.

@Vishnu.,.thanks and happy for ur reply.,
November 21, 2010 at 5:48 pm
@vishnu.,.what speed u maintain in 5th gear.,?
November 23, 2010 at 10:07 pm
Hi Kiran,
i usually change to 5th only after crossing 50kmph. If u see a slow moving traffic ahead, there is no use to climb to the 5th gear, instead go on with 4th and take ur foot from the accelrator so tht u don’t need to break to slow down.
use the de-acceleration force of engine for slowing down the vehicle. (this means fuller utilisation of fuel once pumped into the engine by pushing the accelerator)
regards
Vishnu

hi Vishnu.,
i hav one more doubt.,in addition to not changing the gear from 4th to 5th(if we c a slow moving traffic ahead) can i change the gear to neutral?
i know if v put the gear in neutral, all the 4 wheels gets free from the engine and so this is not a safe practice. but because of this reason, engine de-acceleration can be avoided and the car can move little more distance even without a very high noticeable fall in its speed(compared to moving in 5th gear).,
so ma doubt is, if i wanna stop ma car at a place which is some 100meters away, should i keep moving on 5th gear(taking foot from accelerator) or in neutral gear? which will consume more fuel?
for a better mileage is it enough to maintain a speed between 50 to 70kmhr in 5th gear?
November 25, 2010 at 9:20 pm
Hi Kiran,
It suicidal to put on neutral while the vehicle is moving. IN olden days Taxi drivers followed this practice in amby and fiat. Those old cars are equipped with a break system some what similar to the one u find in 100 cc bikes, so the neutral or in-gear status of the engine has little to do with the break effectiveness.
Vehicles like a-star is equipped with a power break which mainly uses the vacuum produced by engine while de-accelerating. So if u put the car into neutral when it is traveling @ around 35 to 45 km/hr, ur engine rpm comes down rapidly resulting in reduction of the vacuum power in the breaking system. when u apply the breaks, u r pushing urself as well as other vehicles on the road to a very dangerous situation.
Never ever try to ride with the engine turned off, or in neutral gear. If u ride with the engine turned off in neutral gear, ur breaks system just shuts down and u won’t get any breaks. The break pedal won’t go down how ever hard u push………… if u don’t believe my words, take ur car to some empty stadium or some place like that and give a try.
So for god’s sake pls don’t go behind such foolish ideas like riding in neutral and all.
In india running a car costs around Rs.3.5 to Rs4.5 per kilometer. There is no other short cut yaar………. increase ur income or reduce ur usage………….
With Best Regards…………..

@Vishnu
In the beginning itself i told you dat i knw “THIS IS NOT A SAFE PRACTICE”
here ma question is.,. which method will consume less fuel.,?and i was not asking you bout the safety of it.,k?
now about the braking. until ma engine is turned off, ma power brake works efficiently..,
if u know the answer for ma question then plz do answer it.
regards.,.
