Delhi Auto Expo 2012 is the biggest platform in the Indian Automobile World. India being attractive ground for many car companies from India and abroad, it will see many innovative and surprising products. On day 1 of no. 1 automobile event, India’s no. 1 car company showcased many products which will draw the future roads for Maruti Suzuki India Ltd (MSIL). Company faced worst year because of several issues like Strike, Cancellation due to longer waiting periods, Declined sale figures in Festive season and last quarter. But now they are ready to fight back by strengthening their already strong product portfolio with their First MPV, ‘ERTIGA’. With this addition MSIL has now made foray into new ground which is already dominated by Giants like all time leader Toyota Innova and Mahindra Xylo. Remember that both products will be seeing upgrades at this same time. But to prove on those grounds will require pure skills like features, comforts etc and tactics of great pricing, efficiency etc.

Today, Maruti Suzuki has unveiled the Ertiga MPV, which was showcased two years ago as a concept (RIII) at the 2010 Auto Expo. The Maruti Suzuki Ertiga will go on sale in March, 2012 and is based on the extended Swift platform. An all new K14B petrol engine debuts on the Ertiga, producing 93.87 BHP of peak power at 6000 RPM and 13.25 kgm of peak torque at 4000 RPM. ARAI certified mileage if 16.02 kmpl. The SX4′s 1.3-liter diesel engine will provide power to DDiS Ertiga, producing 89 BHP of power. Pricing has not been revealed.

From specifications above, it appears to be a cheapest and smallest of all, as it has always been with all the products of MSIL. So it intends to hit the sweet spot of Indian customers looking for MUV at price of medium sedans. Small from outside indirectly reflects to be small from inside. It seems hard to fit the 8th one in. All the contents, the size, engine options, Maruti reliability are now mixed together form a good recipe in all. Let’s see how it tastes to Indian personal and commercial customers.

k12B on swift produces 87 ps…. k14b produces just 94 ps thats only 7ps more for a 200 cc increase in displacement!!
any way MUL has got a well rounded package in Ertiga(But name should hv been different)

@Rajan , Ananthakrishan, abhisek: From specs it appears to be underpowered, But just think of how economical it would be…. It seems balance between power and economy.. as it has always been Maruti..

@Deepak, Kedar, Harsha : Overall good package.. killer pricing expected..

The author seems to be a kid when it comes to car. ERTIGA is not in competition with Innova or JAHILO (XYLO). It will compete with Honda Jazz.

Just bcoz it 6-7 seater at this stage doesn’t mean it is like Innova. The back seat can fold flat, adding more space to boot space. Its a bit higher to Jazz and has similar size engine.

Its a MPV and NOT a MUV! ;D

So go check specs first and then write reviews.

Thank God he didn’t compare it to TATA Aria! LOL! ;P

Man u truly live up to ur self-description Road Side Romeo of Automobiles.

John, before you leave comments like these you should be well aware about Maruti Suzuki’s competition benchmarking. The base Innova and top end Ertiga will be in the same price bracket and thus a comparo with the Innova and Xylo becomes obvious.

@John :
Thanks for criticism..

At least in Europe and Asia MPV and MUV addresses to similar segment.
Honda Jazz fairs as FAMILY car or hatchback and not as Multi Purpose/Utility Vehicle(Personal/commercial transport/large luggage).

The table above tries to explain how it fairs against two especially in terms of size. You are right that it is much smaller than Xylo and Innova but it can accommodate the third row, jazz can’t.

At last, numbers will reflect how it is taken up by customers (as commercial or personal or both purpose vehicle) when it is launched.

Thank you once again for criticism my friend.

My Jahilo Roadside Reviewer Suraj,

Now U can eat your words.

UR Xylo is starting at D2 BS III – Rs. 7,33,645 and ur Toyota Innova starts at Grade E – Euro III 8,89,022 and Euro IV at Rs. 9,14,022 lakh.

So Honda Jazz base is at Rs. 575,000 and Maruti Suzuki Ertiga base is at Rs 5,89,000 lakh. So now, HOW does your pea brain says its comparable to xylo and Innova, when even VXI is lesser than base variant of both. Ertiga ENDS where your Innova even starts.

Maruti Suzuki has even introduced price it lower than my expectation coz of the reasons i’m sure I expected starting 6 lakh.

* Note all prices are Ex-showroom and taken from manufacture’s websites and not from other automobile sites.

And for SHAFY U and SURAJ can go in Ertiga’s third row and would LUV it if both of you can fit in it or are below 4.5 ft. ;)

Mr. John..

Seems that you are a great brainer….
Looks like you invented new criteria for comparing cars..
If the prices are matching ONLY then they are comparable otherwise not…. Is it so??

FYIP 5.89lakh is price for BASE PETROL model..
Diesel reaches 8.45 lakh…… that too these are INTRODUCTORY PRICES.. so expect +30 to 50 grand to be added…..

And the same Jazz like pricing will help Maruti in sales..

Maruti has hit the cords exactly by creating new segment while bringing this car….

John the Gyani.. Do give us such inventions……
So should we compare Nano with CBR250?? Coz there also prices are matching dude..

I forgot I am arguing with a Roadside Romeo!

As per YOUR article, neither Dimension, Engine nor Your Price estimates and also MS Presentation price slide matches with your Jahilo and Innova and still you are comparing the 2 with Ertiga.

Wow I didn’t know your Engineering College taught you that 1.4 is equal to 2 ltr Petrol engine and 1.3 is = 2.5 ltr Diesel engine. Is it Khanna automart college?

I already said “Ertiga ENDS where your Innova even starts.”

Let me HELP you understand – MS Price slide says Ertiga ZDI(Top End) is Rs 8.45 lakh and Toyota Innova 2.5 EV (Diesel) MS 8 is Rs. 8,89,022, this is a Euro III base model.

Top End model less than (<) Base Model.

Now we add YOUR 50K(Max hiked price as ASSTIMATED, oops estimated by Mr. Suraj) to Ertiga ZDi = Rs. 8,45,000 + 50,000 = Rs. 8,95,000.00.

Now hiked up Ertiga ZDi for Rs. 8,95,000 and Toyota Base model for Rs. 8,89,022.

Go ahead you can estimate hiked price to 1 lakh, but it still wont do much to help you.

You mean to say that Specs given by you and all other points given by you don't add up to any logic, still you trying to prove that you stand correct.

You really remind me of our local mechanics, no matter how CORRECT the car owner is, for these mechanics "Ek hi baat hai sirji, MRF ho ya Bridgestone!"

Poor guy he can only dream and review virtual cars, we own and drive these cars… ;)

Please don't advise others too compare, I'm not the one who compared Ertiga to Xylo(Jahilo) and Innova.

I apologies to make you look idiot!!!

Are you too dumb to understand that equal pricing is not the criteria to compare……. The market segment they are targeting is important..

The fleet carriers as well as personal utility vehicle are being targeted with Ertiga by Maruti.. The area where they are striving since long time..

Also as per mathematical demonstration by you Mr. John the mathematician.. If it serves the purpose in lesser price then its a good thing………
(coz i think 8.95 of ZDi Ertiga is too much less than 13.22 of Innova VX 7 seater)

Leave it dude, it looks like you are still in primary class or KG that’s why you are arguing based ONLY on difference in numbers….. (and the way in which you are arguing also points somewhat similar)..

Think the market which is targeted at by Ertiga and think of the price and think of………………………!! Stop stop..
Or its better you don’t even think.. Don’t stress your brain..
Coz “John the Inventor” we need you brain to work….
as we are waiting for your bright thoughts and ideas…. ;) :P

Mr John… Self proclaimed auto guru.. who loves to call others idiot, please see CNBC Awaaz show “Ertiga degi Takkar” telecast on 14th April… And then open your crocodile mouth… Then i hope it will be easy for u to swallow ur words..

Mr. Shady,

I don’t watch such cheap titled shows on TV – Ertiga degi takkar.

but there is a decent auto review blog – “carnoise.blogspot.in”

here’s an excerpt from their article.

Ertiga vs Innova: Conclusion.
By now it is clear that no matter in how much detail we try and compare Maruti Ertiga with Innova, the bottomline always remains the same i.e. both MPVs are different and by comparing one with other we do justice with none. … Innova already rules the large MPV market and Ertiga don’t have any rivals yet to compete against in the compact MPV segment. But that is going to change soon when manufactures like Chevrolet, Renault, Nissan, Mahindra etc come to the market with their own version of mini MPV.

Even they tried to compare but had to change their thoughts in the end.

You want well known auto review site sayin the same Ertiga and Innova are not comparable I have that. Blog members and experts of well known auto blog answering to my question – say that Ertiga is NOT comparable to Innova, I have that too…

You see 7 seats, seven seats are in Tata Aria (Innova range), Tata Venture (Near Ertiga) and many more, now go compare with all of them.

Even your article above says Engine DOESN’T meet, Dimension DOESN’T meet and even price DOESN’T meet, still to U ppl it Ertiga meets Innova. Why? coz its 7 seater. Why you all say dat coz few others are sayin the same…

But, now i understand what some of you at Motorbeam are… Average Joe who can only copy what other Average Joe’s are thinking. You guys don’t have mind and though of you own?

If you are honestly accepting fair criticism then you would accept that compasion in the article above was incorrect, other wise I can understand you are kids in front of well known and reputed auto reviewers.

BTW im no auto guru, romeo of autos or engineer neither here to stop any one individual or team for doing their good work. I’m only arguing on the thought of the article which needs to be mature. And I apologies to name calling.
