Mercedes CLA India Launch Set For 2013

Mercedes-Benz CLA

Mercedes-Benz has revealed its plans for India. The car maker has confirmed that they will launch their compact sedan CLA in India this year. The vehicle was recently unveiled at the 2013 Detroit Motor Show. The all new CLA is based on the new Modular Front Architecture (MFA) platform and this new platform is also being shared with the A-Class hatchback. Mercedes-Benz is offering a standard trim with diesel and petrol engine options and a souped up AMG version in the international market.

We expect that the German automaker will launch the CLA with the standard trim only for churning out big volumes in the market. The CLA250 is powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine that produces a maximum power output of 208 BHP and a peak torque of 350 Nm. The CLA220 CDI features a 2.2-litre diesel engine producing a maximum power output of 167 BHP and a peak torque figure of 350 Nm. Both the engines are mated to a 7-speed dual clutch automatic transmission.

The base variant of the Mercedes-Benz CLA features front-wheel drive system and the 4Matic variant features an all-wheel drive system. The CLA comes equipped with the ECO stop/start system as standard on all version for keeping the engine fuel efficient. The compact sedan offers a long list of premium features and safety features including panoramic roof, Attention Assist for drowsiness detection, radar based Collision Prevention Assist with adaptive Brake Assist, Blind Spot Assist, Lane Keeping Assist, an optional AMG styling kit and a choice of multimedia systems. The CLA will be positioned just under the C-Class and is expected to carry a price tag of Rs. 25 lakhs.

Hi Aariz, This will be an interesting car. A cab-forward, front wheel drive layout should liberate a large greenhouse. Something which will not be possible by the BMW 1’er because of its rear wheel drive layout and importantly the 50/50 weight distributed body which means no cab-forwarding possibilities. Needless to say, that layout surely improves the BMW’s drive character but seriously challenges space , especially at the rear making one wonder if space that tiny ever required dedicated doors?! A coup sedan would be nice but I doubt there will be serious takers for such a product.

To move away from the traditional fluid-coupled torque-converter auto box to the awesome dry-clutch DSG box is welcome.

Now if only merc will also put in place a proper hand-brake, this car would be a temptation hard to resist. ;)

Ganesh, Mercedes doesn’t plan to offer normal handbrakes on its cars, instead they will offer the foot operated or electronic ones.

Faisal, they are so boring!! :(

Have you tried drifting a merc by applying the foot brakes in it? Is such a thing possible?

    thx.

Ganesh, did you see SLK review? You can see no manual handbrake and it drifts.

Did check your SLK review. Lucky u!!

The drifts seem more like power drifts. Was the car also capable of brake drifts.

Is it also possible that Merc offers a proper hand brake at the SLK?
