Nissan Sunny vs Renault Scala – Pictorial Comparison

Renault has re-badged the Nissan Sunny and named it Scala. The French automaker is conducting media drives in Himachal Pradesh right now, where more details of the car have been disclosed. Now the Renault Scala is nothing but a re-badged Sunny, there are absolutely no mechanical changes to the vehicle. The styling is slightly different in order to differentiate the Scala from the Sunny. The design changes were done by Renault’s design centre in Mumbai. So what is exactly different? Let the pictures do the talking.

At the front, the Renault Scala gets a more aggressive bumper and grille, which makes it look much better than the Nissan Sunny. The Renault badge has been neatly incorporated in the car. The headlights are slightly different too but not by much.

The side profile of both the Sunny and Scala are identical. There are only two differentiating features. One is the stylish alloy wheels and the other is the blinkers on the rear view mirrors. Renault will offer alloy wheels on 185/65/15 tyres as standard on the RxL and RxZ variants. The RxE will get steel wheels on 165/70/14 tyres.

The rear of the Renault Scala gets re-designed tail lights, long chrome strip and a black diffuser which helps in reducing the bulk of the car to a certain extent.

2012 Renault Scala Interiors

The interiors of the Scala are carbon copy of the Sunny. Except the Renault logo on the steering wheel, there is absolutely no difference. The top end variants of the Sunny will feature leather seats as standard.

2012 Renault Scala Rear Seat

Renault will launch the Scala in the first week of September. The car will be priced at a slight premium over the Sunny to prevent cannibalization. Expect the Scala range to start at around Rs. 7 lakhs. The same 1.5-litre diesel (86 PS, 200 Nm) and 1.5-litre petrol (99 PS, 134 Nm) engines will be offered. The petrol engine returns an ARAI mileage of 16.95 km/l and will also get a CVT option. The diesel engine returns an ARAI certified mileage of 21.64 km/l. There are three variants – RxE, RxL and RxZ (petrol variants are available in the former two, while the diesel is available in the latter two). Renault plans to offer ABS as standard across all variants. The Scala is no different than a Sunny but has more features and looks way more attractive than the Nissan. Our review of the Renault Scala is coming soon and if you can’t wait, you can always read the Nissan Sunny Review.

Renault Scala is definately good looking as compared too Sunny … as per as Exterior Mods …… but Renault have should something with the Interior … And How much Is the Price difference between them ? and Is the handling has changed or remained same as Sunny ?

    • Faisal Khan August 24, 2012, 7:54 pm

Pritam, handling is the same as the Sunny. No mechanical changes.

    • Javeid Khan August 25, 2012, 10:20 am

Pritam, though the mechanicals are the same, slight changed have been made to the suspension and I felt the handling to be better than the Sunny. Expect the Scala to be priced at a premium of approx 30K per corresponding variant of the Sunny.

  • Kedar August 24, 2012, 7:19 pm

    It superb than Sunny.

Sunny looks like old man’s car and Scala is for Young men :-)

  • Ysak August 24, 2012, 7:38 pm

  • bhavesh August 24, 2012, 9:00 pm

  • rafi August 25, 2012, 3:29 am

The scala looks much more modern especially the rear than the sunny.

  • Faraz August 25, 2012, 8:54 am

Hey what is with these brands, Nissan and Renault. They have been seen duplicating designs lately. Earlier it was with Nissan Micra which renault took it as Pulse and now Sunny as Scala. Is it official ? have you got anything there !

    • Javeid Khan August 25, 2012, 10:31 am

Faraz, Renault – Nissan have an alliance and this helps them jointly develop products and saves them money on development. It’s very much official. For example, the Sunny uses the Renault K9K series engine and the Scala uses the Nissan V platform.

      • Faraz August 25, 2012, 11:26 am

Ok. I have now read about the alliance of Nissan – Renault. But this launch of similar designs would be targeted for countries where both of them doesnt operate. India has got both these card brands selling the same designs, almost, to customers. Does it help in getting better sales figures. I am not sure.

        • Javeid Khan August 27, 2012, 12:45 am

Faraz, I agree with you to some extent and have put up your question with the Renault officials. They say that only 10 percent customers would shift from the Scala to Sunny and vice versa. Also even if the cars were completely different, they would still sit in the same segment. Therefore, it makes sense to rebrand them and target them at different sets of customers.

I must say that Renault design engineers are far better than the Nissan. Scala does look plush. I like the rear treatment and teh front as well. Minor change to headlight brought in whole lot of differece to the look.

  • Rajan August 25, 2012, 3:30 pm

I somehow see Jag similarity on teh rear.. ??

    • Faisal Khan August 25, 2012, 8:33 pm

Rajan, from far it also seems to take cues from the S-Class.

  • Ananthakrishnan August 25, 2012, 10:18 pm

    Expected more in interior.
Most repulsive and dull interiors in its segment.
Renault did same with pulse too:(
    Styling is impressive.

  • Gautam August 26, 2012, 8:46 pm

The Scala looks so much better. Renault should have worked on the Interiors with a different dashboard like how Skoda did..

  • Andy August 27, 2012, 4:37 pm

THE MILLION DOLLAR QUESTION REMAINS – Has Renault provided any solutions to the Engine Noise problem found in Nissan Sunny? The Maruti Swift DZire, followed by Tata Indigo CS remain the best sedans overall.

    • Javeid Khan August 31, 2012, 1:19 pm

Andy, Yes, the Scala is more refined than the Sunny. Renault has done some fine tuning on the engine front.

  • Imran Khan August 27, 2012, 5:28 pm

Well, just a quick question…. In my views Renault Scala sedan will not work wonders like it did for Nissan in the form of Sunny, though I believe it will not reach even near to the success of Sunny…what do you say… Faisal/Javed? Is it another dud impending from Renault India.
If Scala fails, which am damn sure due to its similarity with Sunny, it will really be a sloppy ending to French promise of launching 5 new cars.

  • ashikali September 18, 2012, 1:58 am

  • Dr sajid October 15, 2012, 10:30 pm

first i had a look of sunny then took a test drive of scala i was completely impressed by scala. looks ease of driving and features like ellectrical collapsable rear view mirrors. indicaters on same and audio control on stearing. iam going to book scala desiel next month

  • Krishna November 16, 2012, 10:54 pm

Are there any coming up changes in Renault Scala Interiors, which are differentiating from Sunny.

    • Faisal Khan November 17, 2012, 2:24 am

Krishna, absolutely none, other than the leather seats on the top-end variant and the Renault badge on the steering wheel.

  • mrudul December 20, 2012, 1:46 pm

as we all know the alliance between renault-nissan. nissan is soon launching renaultʹs duster

  • mrudul December 20, 2012, 1:49 pm
