Fire Tata Nano Faulty Switch Causes Tata Nano Fire

Three cases of fire in the Tata Nano have been reported in the past few days in Delhi, Lucknow and Ahmedabad after a faulty combination switch triggered smoke and burning of plastic parts. Thankfully there were no injuries or loss of life in any of the incidents. However Tata Motors may undertake a pre-emptive check on the 7500 cars that have been delivered till date but no recall or the time being. Tata Motors says their experts will check all the cars with customers, purely as a precautionary measure. Unlike in the US and European car markets, recall of cars is not mandatory in India, even in cases of technical faults.

The company is not considering any re-engineering in the car despite the fact that the fires were caused by a common problem in all the cases. The cars were stationary when the fires were reported. Tata Motors has not started to export the car yet. It refused to share the number of Nanos parked at its Pantnagar factory in Uttrakhand and those with dealers. The owners of the car that caught fire have sought compensation from Tata Motors.

TATA is known for cheap and unreliable products. What more can we expect? TATA survival in Indian auto industry is purely because we the people of India dont really care about safety or reliability, We strom towards the cheap offerings. None of the products of TATA Automobiles are reliable and they dont seem to be taking effort to improve that image.

Ford Fire Recall: Cruise Control Fires – Free Case Review
October 2009 Update: Largest Single Recall in Ford History
On October 13, 2009, Ford Motor Co. announced an expansion to its largest-ever automotive recall by adding about 4.5 million vehicles to the recall over a faulty switch linked to hundreds of vehicle fires.
The action, which comes in the face of an 18-month federal investigation, means the company has now called back more than 14 million vehicles in eight separate recalls over a 10-year period because of the problem.
The cruise-control deactivation switches, made by Texas Instruments and sold for about $21, were installed in 16 million Ford vehicles over a decade before the automaker stopped using them in early 2003. The switches have been linked to at least 550 vehicle fires and 1,500 complaints.
