Tata Motors Planning To Put A Boot On Nano

Tata Nano Sedan

Tata Motors is planning to revive the Nano by fitting in a bigger 1.0-litre petrol motor to take on the Maruti Suzuki Alto. The big news is that the company is also planning to stretch the Nano into a compact sedan. Reports say that Tata Motors is working on a 996cc petrol motor to replace the current 624cc unit powering the Nano. In order to support the bigger engine, Tata Motors are working on strengthening the Nano’s chassis.

The Tata Nano compact sedan is likely to carry forward the same styling from the hatchback, we don’t expect any major styling updates on the sedan and yes, it will measure less than 4-metres, in order to price the sedan aggressively. Recently we heard that the Nano will be upgraded with an 800cc 3-cylinder engine, although Tata Motors haven’t confirmed on any upgrades yet, apart from the diesel and CNG variant of the Nano, which is expected to roll out in the next few months.

While the Tata Nano sedan will require extensive re-working due to the rear-engine layout, we feel Tata Motors can bring out a sedan version of the Nano, given the high appeal a three-box vehicle has in India. These renderings by MotorBeam specialist Anupam Singh Parihar of the Nano CS shows the vehicle to be quite plausible.

We have heard unending rumors about different avatars of the Nano, but if the reports for the Nano sedan come to be true, this move from the car maker can help the product make a better presence in the Indian market. If the plan works out well for the company, we can see the cheapest sedan running on our roads soon. Currently, Tata Motors is offering the Nano only in a single avatar, which runs on a 624cc, 2-cylinder petrol unit churning out 37 BHP of power and 51 Nm of torque and starts with a price tag of Rs. 1,50,000/- (ex-showroom, Delhi).

Eww…Please TATA. Do not launch this eyesore in the market. Nano is a cute car. Just improve the plastics utilising the cost allotted for making this compact sedan.

It damages the company images. As India,we need to support Indian Manufacturers. At least give some respect

Sedan version going to be Rear Engine Rear Wheel drive? Or any plans of moving the engine where it normally is in most cars?

I dont think TATA will do this.
If ever they had such a plan, they would have defenetly opted for front engine layout at design phase. Unless the Nano is engineered so at its design phase, the chassis re-work will be huge. If a sedan has an RR layout, then it will be a challenge to get the engine cooled, and it will be access to engine bay difficult.
If TATA were to do it, they should opt to project it as a completly different product, with out shouting out thr Nano pedigree.

Very skeptical about this article’s validity. The nano with a sedan boot at the moment seems far fetched dream, really doubt the existence of such plans.

In my opinion, the Nano looks Cute but this sedan’s ungainly proportions may limit numbers. Tata could make up by improving equipment and Cabin and build quality. And please put a power steering and improve that ride.

this might be serious in term of heating…………and another block of boot which will become problem from cooling the rear engine………….
and also a car developed in hatchback physics will never look good enough in terms of sedan physics……

Huhhh….Faisal, that sure is a v.ugly car. Maybe an estate but sedan?!?!
I loved some of these thoughts shared by fellow readers .
    * A boot that will not open?
    * How exactly will the engine be accessed/cooled?
    * With the engine also at the rear, heavy weight passengers can actually get the nano to wheely,

What I think the vendors would have expressed, was to have a cheap sedan car and not a nano sedan ;)

The nano is not a bad car atall. With a 3 cyd making it sound like a car, a power steering and if possible an optional targa top, this car will start doing well. The other day I was watching a story about the mini cooper on Discovery Turbo channel. The mini too seems to have met with lukewarm reception during its launch and seems to have done well only after a few years from launch.

Mr Faisal, please let the users know that this is an image created by you/your team and not released by TATA. That is an ugly looking terrible photoshop image. Please be responsible and mention all details.

if tata is playing to increase the power of NANO then it is good….but if they are planning to add boot to the NANO then it will be the sense less decision of TATA….

Please!! Tata can work at making it a better car. To really live upto the expectations of those, who eagerly wait for their ‘Made in India Bug’. Come out with Tata Pixel instead of making the Nano more horrible.

You build Jaguars, you can definitely build the ‘Nano (Smart) for Two’. We trust you Mr. Tata.
