A brand new Tata Nano LX caught fire on the Eastern Express Highway when Mumbai resident Satish Purshotam Sawant was taking his newly acquired possession home. The silver Nano cost Satish Rs. 2.4 lakh and as he doesn’t know how to drive, it was being driven to LIC Colony, Mulund (W) by the driver of Concorde Motors (Prabhadevi). A motorcycle rider signaled to them to look behind pointing at the rear part of the car which was in flames. A fire tender rushed to the scene and doused the fire. Thankfully everyone traveling in the car are safe.
Update 23/03/2010 - Tata Motors has said that they will look into the case and find out the reason for the fire. They have also offered full refund to the buyer.

low cost vechicle, low quality products …..
wat is tata doing?
March 22, 2010 at 6:31 pm
Thats seriously bad news… Tata is gonna have to perform a recall or its gonna be a serious blow… Im sure the auto magazines (print) wont publish this as they seem to be scared of litigation and lawsuits…
March 22, 2010 at 7:40 pm
Well, if this news doesn’t make it to the magazines then that is another issue of sorts.
What I don’t understand is, when such issue was prevalent before as well. Why hasn’t Tata Motors done anything about it?
March 22, 2010 at 8:04 pm
As per my knowledge tata has pass all safety norms as per Automotive Research Association of India(ARAI)………. And it is well known agency in automotive sector. or there are some other story behind this…….like is it Competitor’s plan for negative marketing of tata?…..lets see what are reasons for this incident.

I am sure this is not the latest photograph. Where in India is the number plate ready on the delivery day from showroom? see the number plate. its already black on white while a showroom delivered vehicle might have red on yellow (For registration vehicles). Let me know if iam wrong.
March 22, 2010 at 10:29 pm
Sunil, it is the picture of the real car. The rules have changed. The car is first registered and then only it is delivered. You can’t drive a car on temporary plates anymore. Since the buyer bought the car in Prabhadevi and is going to Mulund, he cannot go without crossing the check points where he will have to pay fine. So I can guarantee you, the car pictured above is the real deal.

my only thought is y people go for this lil piece of crap , instead of paying 2.4 lakh for this car , the owner would have gone for maruthi alto , & maruthi is always reliable …..tata motors is the worst automobile company in india i can say , coz i see many tata cars in highways brokendown ,, low quality parts, aged technology etc etc…..as fas said this issue should be reached to millions of people in india , so magazines should take this issue seriously !!!!!

Tata needs to start designing with modern aids rather than with text books used by 12th standard dudes… Plus testing needs to be done by them and not the customer… I mean we’re not freaking guinea pigs for gods sake…
March 23, 2010 at 12:41 am
I would say, instead of putting this aside, Tata needs to look into this matter. Its almost as bad as the Toyota unintended acceleration bit. Only thing in India, we forget too soon and companies get away.

In on eof th enews it is stated that the Car was having Power Steering feature.
As far as I know . None of the Nano model comes with Power steering. If the modification is done, things like this are bound to happen
March 23, 2010 at 6:22 pm
AM, I heard somewhere that the guy had opted for power steering. Does that mean the modification was after market? Or done by the deaer? Because a Nano certainly doesn’t cost Rs. 2.4 lakhs in Mumbai. Maybe the extra amount can be for the power steering fitment.

Rightly said fas…..

Fire may be due to low CC engine with heavy load. Does TATA has experimented the cause behind this fire as this happend early as well. If the cause is due to low CC engine, then TATA NANO will not survive long.

I am a Nano LX owner at Chennai and have been using the car since 9th November 2009. I have covered 1800 Kms till date. I have a major mileage problem with my car which consistently returns a mileage of just 10.7 Kms per lite which I have repeatedly checked from full tank (nozzle level) to the next full tank (nozzle level) filling. The car does not run more than 170 Kms on a full tank filling (15.8 litres to 16.8 litres.I have brought this to the notice of Tata Motors but the Chennai Tata Motors Executives are clueles as to how the problem can be resolved even after two joint trials. They are orally stating that I can expect only around 12 Kms per litre in city traffic driving conditions but are refusing to put this down in writing. The ARAI stated mileage is 23.6 Kms per litre and there is absolutely no correlation between the ARAI stared mileage of 23.6 Kms per litre and the mileage of 10.7 Kms per litre that I am consistently getting in the past few months.

S. Prabhakar, that is terrible. This means there is some serious defect with your car.
March 24, 2010 at 1:50 pm
Man, this (prob stated by Prabhakar) is sad.
Tata shld do something abt this. I heard the car returns an avg of 17 kmpl for normal city driving.
March 24, 2010 at 6:11 pm
This is unbelievable! I think this 4th or 5th incident in last few months. Just imagine Car going up in smoke while being driven from show room to house!! All customers of Tata Motors need to come forward and express their apprehensions
