Automobile Research Association of India has certified that Nano, the cheapest car in the world with a price tag of Rs 1.2 lakh in Delhi, is also the most economical one among the 450 models available in the market. Fuel costs are by far the largest component of the overall operating cost of a vehicle in India making it the single most factor influencing customer decision. Tata Nano is more fuel efficient than the Maruti A-Star by 4 kmpl by posting a mileage figure of 23.6kmpl.
Maruti Suzuki still remains the company with the most fuel efficient cars by occupying 2nd and 3rd places for the most efficient petrol engined cars while also coming up in third position in the diesel category. Tata Motors topped the study with the Tata Nano while the Indigo Dicor Saloon came 2nd in the diesel catagory. Hyundai shared the third position in the petrol engine category with Maruti Suzki Alto for its i10 while topping the diesel category with the Verna.
Top 3 Fuel Efficienct Petrol Cars in India
1. Tata Nano – 23.6kmpl.
2. Maruti Astar – 19.6kmpl.
3. Maruti Alto/Hyundai i10 – 18.1kmpl.
Top 3 Fuel Efficienct Diesel Cars in India
1. Hyundai Verna – 21.9kmpl.
2. Tata Indigo Dicor – 21.4kmpl.
3. Maruti Swift – 21kmpl.
We would advice you to take these figures with a bucketload of salt. We are quite suprised to see that ARAI which approves cars for the country can be so unrealistic when it comes to mileage figures.

………Interesting

Just a bit curious that the 800/Omni doesnt figure here in the list since the engine is the same as the Alto though tuned slighly differently
. I didnt realize the Indigo Dicor was such a good performer.
Also surprised to see no mention of the Palio Diesel, Indica Vista Quadrajet also not mentioned since they have the same Fiat Multijet as the Swift DDiS.

Sushil, the 800 and Omni use a 4 speed gearbox, whereas the Alto uses a 5 speed one. Palio Diesel and Indica Vista Quadrajet has different engine tuning so doesn’t have the same fuel efficiency. Plus they are heavier too.

Great points Faisal – I missed thinking about the 4 speed vs 5 speed thing. Was stuck in the past when there was a 5 speed 800 MPFi. Also the thing about the weights was great – at some level I knew this affected mileage – guess putting the Vista and the Palio on a diet could really improve their mileage somewhat.
I was so curious I looked up their kerb weights – here it is for easy reference:
Kerb weights (in Kg):
Swift: 1,065 (LDI) VDI is 10 Kg heavier.
Palio: 1,065
Vista: 1,140 (Quadrajet)
Its very clear like you mentioned that just the weight alone is not the driver for mileage. the Palio and the Ldi should give the same mileage since they have the same engine – but the answer like you mentioned- its all in the tuning.
