Great points Faisal – I missed thinking about the 4 speed vs 5 speed thing.Was stuck in the past when there was a 5 speed 800 MPFi. Also the thing about the weights was great – at some level I knew this affected mileage – guess putting the Vista and the Palio on a diet could really improve their mileage somewhat.
I was so curious I looked up their kerb weights – here it is for easy reference:

Kerb weights (in Kg):
Swift: 1,065 (LDI) VDI is 10 Kg heavier.
Palio: 1,065
Vista: 1,140 (Quadrajet)

Its very clear like you mentioned that just the weight alone is not the driver for mileage. the Palio and the Ldi should give the same mileage since they have the same engine – but the answer like you mentioned- its all in the tuning.

Sushil, the 800 and Omni use a 4 speed gearbox, whereas the Alto uses a 5 speed one. Palio Diesel and Indica Vista Quadrajet has different engine tuning so doesn’t have the same fuel efficiency. Plus they are heavier too.

Just a bit curious that the 800/Omni doesnt figure here in the list since the engine is the same as the Alto though tuned slighly differently :-). I didnt realize the Indigo Dicor was such a good performer.

Also surprised to see no mention of the Palio Diesel, Indica Vista Quadrajet also not mentioned since they have the same Fiat Multijet as the Swift DDiS.
