We all are wondering about the Tata Nano’s performance but we need not worry anymore. Car Magazine got a ride in the most awaited Indian car ever and there is positive news.
Two cylinders, 624cc and 33bhp isn’t much. But unladen, this four-door, five-seat city car weighs just 600kg, so even with four adults aboard our prototype delivered sufficient acceleration to cope easily with city traffic. Ignore the likely 17-second 0-60mph time. By 60mph the Nano is running out of puff, but to 30mph or 40mph it feels far more competitive.
A 0 – 96 kmph time of 17 seconds is quite impressive for a car like the Nano with fuel efficiency figures around 25kmpl. CAR says that Tata engineers are working on a range of upgrades including airbags, anti-lock brakes, power steering, a more powerful 3-cylinder gasoline and diesel engine, and a 5-speed automatic gearbox.
CAR’s first ride in the Tata Nano felt far more significant and exciting than a first drive in a Ferrari or Lamborghini, because this car’s importance is immeasurably greater. It won’t compete on dynamics or quality with European or Japanese city cars, but it doesn’t have to.

Fas, this is not a review. Touch your heart and tell me. There’s nothing substantial in this for it to be considered as a review. Just a few exclusive pictures by CAR Mag. That’s all.

Shrawan please check out what car has to say, i call it a review. Its not just pics, they have said about its quality and other things. When they drive it i would call it a test drive report

2 Cylinder 33 BHP!?! I never thought I would say this, but I think I would actually prefer a smart car hehehe – I am curious how big those wheels/tires are!!! They look like they are 6 inch rims at most!!

Nano comes with top speed of 106kph and can reach 100kph in 29.7 seconds. Now thats a decent peformance considering cars price. It has about one third of the usual number of parts.

There are no pictures of Nano’s rear engine and how it is placed. Can we get some?

Thanks Fas, Since I am not located in India, very eager to know whats going on. Looks like Nano is playing a game of hide and seek. So, new Nanos are hard to see?Even dealers won’t allow to take pics or test drive?Have you driven one? Looking forward for new updates.

Sheroy, I haven’t driven the Nano yet but have checked the car out in person. The Nano was quite overhyped before launch, it didn’t really take off as much as Tata expected it to.
I sat in the Nano and found the car quite good for its price. http://www.motorbeam.com/wp-content/uploads/Tata_Nano_Motorbeam.JPG

Hello Fas, thanks for the reply.Did you see the engine? From my knowledge, it is underneath the back seat, and accessed through the seat flipped? or worked on accessing from under, lifting the car ? Almost all the parts are made by good vendors, mostly European, and so the quality and performance can’t be bad, right?
From your picture, it says, simple and solid build and the interior has quality to it, I would say.

Sheroy, I didn’t see the engine. Yes the engine needs to be accessed that way. Not that easy to access like a front engined car. Quality is not bad but its not good either, its average and that is pretty good for a car of this segment.

Hello Fas,
I found this picture, that matches closest to the view of a Tata Nano engine.
Looks like it is air cooled.

Sheroy, the engine looks quite small, actually it is but due to the rear engine mounting it will lead to more time in servicing.
