Tata Motors Unveils Zest Compact Sedan [Live]

Tata Zest Sedan

Tata Motors has just unveiled the Zest, which is a sub 4-metre version of the Manza but gets heavy changes. Like the Bolt, the Zest too gets a plethora of changes but the biggest is the F-Tronic Automated Manual Transmission (AMT) which is the first in the segment in the compact sedan space, as it will be offered with the diesel too. The Tata Bolt and Zest are designed with inputs from Tata Motors’ design studios in Pune, Turin (Italy) and Coventry (UK). The Tata Zest gets Daytime Running Lights (DRLs), projector headlights, LED tail lamps, 15-inch alloy wheels and a new Buzz Blue colour. The DRLs differentiate the Zest from the Bolt.

The Tata Zest is powered by a 1.3-litre Multijet diesel engine (Quadrajet in Tata speak) which produces 90 PS of power and 200 Nm of torque. The petrol engine is the 1.2-litre Revotron unit which belts out 85 PS and 140 Nm. Both petrol and diesel engines will be offered with F-Tronic automatic gearbox and a 5-speed manual. All the features from the Bolt are offered on the Zest, like 5-inch infotainment system, smartphone integration, touch-screen, phone enabled navigation, etc. The Zest gets a completely enhanced X1 platform.

The Tata Zest measures 3995 mm in length, 1695 mm in width and 1570 mm in height. It weighs 1106 kgs and has a 44-litre fuel tank. The steering unit is updated and is an EPS wheel with self centring and speed sensitivity. The vehicle runs on 16-inch wheels which is again a segment first as all other compact sedans run on 15-inch rubber.

A quick look at the Tata Zest in person and here is what we think. The Zest looks really good, the design is fresh and the boot doesn’t look awkward but the tail lights are reminiscent of a competitor from the compact sedan space. The quality looks good and Tata Motors is betting big on quality and features at a value for money price to win customers. The company is pursuing best in class customer experience and that is something which will also boil down to its sales and service.

Now Maruti and Hyundai gonna face tough competition from TATA. Awesome work from TATA. I like both of cars.

  • Kshitiz Sharma February 3, 2014, 2:02 pm

the headroom for the rear passanger does not look good.

  • Anirban February 3, 2014, 2:25 pm

  • uday February 3, 2014, 2:25 pm

Great work by Indian auto major…TATA

  • Nimmo February 3, 2014, 2:35 pm

    hats off TATA !!
it must beat Honda amaze and swift desire

  • Antony February 3, 2014, 2:42 pm

Compared to bolt, the zest looks like a completely new car. This is the best designed car is being tata so far. Hope tata price it competitively.

  • Ninu February 3, 2014, 3:03 pm

    where are BOLT’s photos?

  • Atul February 3, 2014, 3:15 pm

WIl surely bring in nos for Tata Motors. After XUV, Zest has set new benchmark for designing by an Indian Manufacturer. Hope the Quality is like wise.

  • Sushrut February 3, 2014, 3:20 pm

Excellent stuff !! Looks like they are getting their mojo back :) … Swift Dzire looks a decade old in front of this design. Hopefully we will see Maruti under pressure to improve their offerings.

  • Harish February 3, 2014, 4:15 pm

Awesome….Zest and Bolt both look cool. And the interiors best in the segment, i just liked the new steering wheel. TATA has worked really hard on this product.

  • Akash February 3, 2014, 4:17 pm

fantastic car from tata. We can say it as the best looking car from tata. great work….

  • Ravi February 3, 2014, 4:52 pm

Best is class styling…. Hats off to TATA …
Proud to say Made in India…..
Please post more images of interior….

  • Vikrant February 3, 2014, 7:51 pm

    Indeed good work by Tata.
    Few Questions:
Does zest have sufficient legroom? or its legroom is utilised for the boot?
What should the predicted price range for these 2 models?

    • Rahul February 4, 2014, 3:26 pm

Dear Vikrant Tata has never compromised with space. Even in Nano they have provided much more space than Scorpio or Dezire. :) So hope we don’t need to worry about space in Zest.

  • sheetal achaliya February 3, 2014, 8:43 pm

superb car made by tata. ..looking as swift desire

    • Nikhil February 3, 2014, 9:04 pm

Cmon.. It looks head and shoulders better than dzire

      • sheetal achaliya February 3, 2014, 9:29 pm

        true bro. ..

        • Nikhil February 4, 2014, 2:33 am

If the ride and handling department is good in this car, I think it will wipe out all other sub 4m for the upcoming Figo sedan which looks awesome!

          • Rahul February 4, 2014, 3:28 pm

Dear Nikhil, A huge difference (positive) have been experienced by me recently in Tata service center and dealership. I think Tata is trying their level best to improve their market share and they will continue to do that.

  • Viju Nair February 3, 2014, 8:43 pm

“THANKGOD”, For Once somebody in TATA used their brains to get the class products for their vehicles.
Was very tired and unhappy to see old and sluggish interiors till date..

  • Nikhil February 3, 2014, 9:04 pm

So happy to see the new design being so much more cohesive than Dzire or even Amaze for that matter. Interiors are way better than any other car in its class

Faisal , I have a few questions for you.

    1. In light of the recent crash tests held, have manufacturers commented on how they will improve the safety (both active and passive) in the cars??

    2. And as a responsible auto blog based in India, how can you emphasize for the manufacturers to commit to enhancing safety in their cars?

    3. The tata zest displayed is probably top end but still I dont see the Airbag embossing on the steering wheel? Has TATA skimped on this essential safety feature to cut costs

  • sandy February 3, 2014, 9:18 pm

Its more then acceptable this time. Personally I like Ford Fiesta’s character lines and I’m glad to see similar design on Zest n Bolt. With that color, the rear profile of Zest looks similar to Dzire, but unlike Dzire it gels well. The dashboard looks smooth and cool like ice cream. Now I’m waiting to know more about – 1.2 Revotron, F-Tronic Automated Manual Transmission (AMT), EPAC steering system which has an active return function, next generation ABS system with cornering stability function, Harman Infotainment system and Narain Karthikeyan’s technical inputs that has gone in developing the dynamics of both the Bolt and Zest. Super Wow….

  • Praveen February 4, 2014, 12:17 am

Now Its Tata motors turn to show other car makers what our home grown company is capable of. Well done tata :-)

  • Rahul Wadia February 4, 2014, 8:50 am

  • Laudu February 4, 2014, 2:53 pm

Go fk urself dickhead… u ask fking lot questions… nobody wants to sell u any car… go ride ur third leg u fkin dick… safety my ass. prrrrr:P

  • Sarkar February 4, 2014, 3:05 pm

It is really a awesome product launched by Tata after a long long time indeed. But its quite revolutionary.

  • Arindam February 4, 2014, 3:07 pm

The Tata Zest really looks good. In compact sedan segment it will be trendsetter for sure.

  • Parvej February 4, 2014, 3:12 pm

After a long time Tata really launched a mind blowing product with a complete new looks (too much refreshed) specially the LED Signature tail lamp and the premium interior is just a new trendsetter in compact sedan segment.

  • Yuvaraj Singh February 4, 2014, 3:16 pm

Yes…our home made products can do it..! Home made things are always better than Outside products…Dezire is so clumsy and Honda amaze looks cheap from interior. The gear shift in Honda Amaze is also very hard. Where as Tata Zest looks very very refreshed and premium from inside and it has drastically changed the exterior too… Well Done Tata Engineers..!

  • Zubin February 4, 2014, 3:27 pm

Tata Designers have really pulled it off this time with the Zest. A true beauty. Hope that Tata does not make it very expensive.

  • Harkaran February 4, 2014, 3:33 pm

This car is obviously going to be a game changer for tata. Heard that its the most refined and perfected car from tata yet. Definitely worth the wait for a homegrown beauty. i wonder when it is coming up for sale ? i am definitely pre booking one.

  • Mahindra Fan aka Tata Hater February 4, 2014, 8:33 pm

    Ugly looking car…yuck.

Hyundai xcent looks far better that this taxi concept LMAO

    Massive flop.

  • Sachin February 4, 2014, 9:10 pm

Great work Tata!! Back with a bang on home market.

  • Jazir February 4, 2014, 9:17 pm

The design factor of Tata engineers has not changed…

    • Bhaskar February 5, 2014, 12:43 pm

Finally a breakthrough for Tata Motors.. thumps up for the great work :)

  • mandar February 5, 2014, 3:38 pm

in the first para it is written that the zest is having 15 inch alloy. in the third para its mentioned to have 16 inch wheels. please clarify!!

  • naren February 6, 2014, 4:59 pm

i have two things here , being a loyal customer (despite having bitter experiences with service..) love simply the TATA’s attitude to come up afresh and sure best come for the best!:), if these models contain atleast 1 socket to hold 2 lit bottle and or two 1litre water holder (universal) :) which might looks stupid, but its practical, like in the outgoing models, you dont need 500ml holders before the gear box (which you prefer be untouched while driving), and another feature that this should have is big no for the THUD sound while locking the doors :) they look cheap and acward! lastly which might be herculian task… they should have seperate service points for white board customers :) (east is east and west are west (on majority))

  • vipul gupta February 8, 2014, 1:38 pm

Looks good, tata motors have come up with some fresh design. These cars must be appreciated.

  • Deep February 10, 2014, 12:12 am

I want to by a car just like ecosport which have ground clearence of 200mm but will be waiting for zest as it said that it had 16 inch alloy wheels . I hope so because i have already a tata car and it is a reliable brand….

  • vinay February 21, 2014, 6:54 am

Mr. Faizal when do you think zest will be available for booking? And will it be available in matte black colour, I saw it in one of the pictures?

    • Faisal Khan February 21, 2014, 9:55 am

That black was for show car. Available by June.

  • shyam March 13, 2014, 11:36 am

Look good… hope this vl b the best car .i like the design. Let us wait and see

  • nasmuddin Khan March 24, 2014, 4:04 pm

    So nice car

  • steward grainger March 27, 2014, 10:58 pm

When are we in South Africa get this new tata i’m very impressed and intended in zest I drive a indigo gsx which is a nightmare
But this new tata zest look incredibly good and shoot the stile of young drivers

    • Faisal Khan March 28, 2014, 12:30 am

Can you share more about your Indigo? What you like/hate the most?

  • amrish April 10, 2014, 1:40 pm

  • Dear Faizal April 26, 2014, 11:32 am

Really fantastic looks for zest, Great works by the designers / engineers / decision makers. this flow should be captured and followed, concentrating more on looks and comforts, simultaneously like sitting in the back seat of a WAGON-R ( the area for head space and leg space )

  • yogesh May 14, 2014, 12:14 am

launching on 6th July, but the test drive and booking starts from June 2nd week……..truly a gem…… sad news is that only Diesel variant is mated with AMT and petrol is said to get the same in a years time…….the fully loaded AMT diesel variant will roughly cost 8.5 L ORP which is really cool considering the competition….

    • Faisal Khan May 14, 2014, 12:33 am

Thanks for the info Yogesh. What about the Bolt, isn’t it coming at the same time?

  • Prashant May 23, 2014, 5:25 pm

Very good looking and spacious car. Better than the same segment car like DZire, Amaze but slightly below Hundai XCent. What keeps this car ahead of all is 5 speed FTronic transmission. First of its kind in diesel segment. Well done tata motors and engineers for a well build package. Eagerly waiting to book one….

  • akhil June 7, 2014, 12:07 am
