The launch of the Chevrolet Cruze has no way helped the Corolla’s cause in the country as sales are nothing to write home about. However Toyota plans to ignite them with the launch of the much awaited and anticipated Altis diesel. The car will get a 1.4-liter D-4D powerplant which will produce 90 bhp of power and close to 200 Nm of torque at 2800 rpm. The diesel Toyota Corolla is expected to retail at a premium of Rs. 60,000/- over its petrol counterpart. The company is also aiming for more than 25% growth this calendar year as it targets to sell a minimum of 70,000 units (8,000 units of Innova, 10,000 Fortuner and 12,000 Corolla Altis).

Toyota are on loose screws these days? They must be joking with this kinda engine – you have C segment cars coming with more powered engines – you put in a diesel give us some power, for god’s sake – and then you charge premium of Rs. 60K above that – Yet another way to fool Indians…

Arun, that is one question which Toyota themselves can’t answer.

Nishant, I think we Indians care less about performance but more about price and economy.

couldnt agree with you more faisal, if toyota made a more powerful engine, people would complain of low mileage.. when they give more mileage they complain about less power.. for toyota its like choosing between the devil and the red sea… give them a break….!!…
Being a toyota, the engines will last a lifetime no matter how its used…

lol – I didn’t know suddenly those in that price bracket, would start thinking of mileage and that too in a diesel, when there is already 1.8/132bhp/170nm petrol motor doing miles since years… people would demand a performance diesel when they are spending a good 13L-15L..

Arun – Fas – well everyone has their own way of thinking for me its like fooling the Indians again, give us some power when we are shelling off that amount of money…

Etios having the same engine would be good enough…

Nishant, most buyers don’t care about power and performance. Its enthusiasts like us who check torque, horsepower and the likes. Whereas most buyers just look at brand, mileage and comfort.

Forget Corolla segment, people even look at mileage when they buy 50 lakh luxury cars. Remember we are Indians and we always prefer diesel even if its cost slightly more. Plus diesel = better resale too.

Yes, sadly I’ll have to agree – we have a majority of people like that, I can name a few around me too :(

However can’t stand these japs taking us for granted… it would be frustrating to see someone shelling off one and half million to buy a putt-putt like that!!! :P

Nishant, I totally agree with you but have high performance cars taken of? Look at the Octavia for example. The diesel puts out 90bhp and the turbo-petrol puts out 150bhp. Both were similarly priced (the petrol was cheaper) and the RS bombed big time that Skoda discontinued it.
