Volkswagen To Launch Polo 1.5 TDI

Volkswagen Polo 1.5

The Volkswagen Polo is currently powered by a petrol and diesel motor. While the 1.2L petrol does a decent job, the 1.2L diesel lacks the thrust expected out a premium hatchback. Now our reader Aseem informs us that a more powerful diesel engine could end up in the Polo to rival the upcoming Maruti Suzuki Swift. There is absolutely no confirmation on this yet but we have spotted the Polo undergoing tests several times. There was no difference in the car visually but could it be the new Polo 1.5 TDi which we are speculating about here?

2012 Volkswagen Polo India Interiors

The new 1.5 liter engine in the Polo would essentially be the current Vento 1.6 liter diesel engine which has been reduced to capacity to comply with small car excise norms. The 4-cylinder motor would produce 94bhp of power and has been tuned to be fuel efficient. The Polo weighs significant lesser than the Vento, so even though power has been reduced from the Vento engine, driveability shouldn’t suffer. The company will launch the more powerful diesel motor in the Polo highline only as customer buying lower variants seldom care about performance. At a premium of Rs. 35,000/- over the current Polo TDi, the 1500cc diesel powered Polo would also feature audio controls on the steering wheel and a new audio system.

Sidd, almost certainly yes. If the Polo has some feature, its highly unlikely that the Vento would miss it.

Now that we know the New Swift’s coming on 17th August, any idea on the launch date of the 1.5 Polo ?

Vishal, there is no confirmation from VW yet. Obviously they will wait for Maruti to announce prices before taking any action on the launch of a new variant of the Polo.

Is that the confirmed news or just a rumour. Will be more than happy to consider a VW 1.5 TDI instead of new swift 2011

Fas, thanks for your response. If I may ask you, assuming the 1.5 TDi Polo is launched soon, which one would you recommend in between the 1.5 TDi Polo and the diesel Swift 2011 ? To be self driven, so driving dynamics extremely important.

No Automatic Climate Control yet ? Well, that sucks. VW may bring in a new 1.5 engine but if it’s priced Rs. 35,000 over the current Polo Highline, then may God save VW. That would mean that a 1.5 TDI Polo’s OTR cost is Bangalore would be close to 9 lakh..put in a lakh more and you could get a Vento…either VW cuts the cost or they’re a flop. The New Swift is around 7 and a half lakhs OTR, Bangalore..why would anyone buy the TDI Polo then ?

Please don’t misunderstand me, I’m a great fan of VW’s quality..but we need to accept that the diesel Polo’s overpriced… I don’t know why VW can’t price it well..they’ve priced the entry level Polo Petrol so well, even the Polo 1.6 is good value for money ( if you exclude the features )..

VW needs to cut the prices and offer more features if it wants to stay alive…

Sunil, there is no news yet. However after the launch of the new Swift at the current prices, VW will have to do something. They won’t launch a new model till they test it completely so that could cause the delay.

Any updates on the launch yet? According to a thread in team bhp, it’s unlikely that the polo 1.5 TDI will launch this year. It’s been 4 months since I’ve started waiting for this variant and now I don’t know what to do :(

even thoudh if it is getting launched is it that only the highline get this 1.5 makeover if so consider swift anyday compared to the price…..:)they should consider the same engine in their other variants also …

    • fas August 21, 2011, 6:57 pm

Buvanesh, I don’t think they will give lower variants 1.5-liter engine as they will lead to increase in price due to increase in excise duties.

Ok. Now here is the update which I got from the sales GM of a dealership in Bangalore. VW indeed is working on a 4 cylinder diesel engine for Polo, but this engine is expected to be launched in next generation polo (7th Gen. Current model is 6th). In 2012 what will get are some minor feature additions to make it more relevant compared to the competition like steering mounted controls, new HU (RCD 310), Navigation System (with the IPL edition), etc. The 7th generation polo is expected to launch in 2H 2013 and no, there will not be any additional models of polo launched this year (quashing the rumors that 1.4/1.5 TDI will launch alongside 1.2). Also, the engine expected to come is 1.4 rather than 1.5 lt. Cannot be 100% sure but looking at the current situation, cannot deny his claims too.

One interesting thing. Polo Highline production was halted for few days in Feb 2012. Nobody knows why. Maybe because of the decision they made about adding steering mounted controls or maybe something else, but the news is true. Now, if somebody can find out the interesting reason behind the production halt in Feb, then we have some news again. (my vehicle delivery got postponed by 3 weeks because of the very reason, hence 2% cost increase I have to bear :()

    • Faisal March 19, 2012, 7:24 pm

Suhail, so the next generation model only comes to India in 2014, that is a long time away.
