Volkswagen has started sales of the Up! hatchback in many countries and has started advertising the vehicle very aggressively. The German automaker recently unveiled the 5-door Volkswagen Up!, which is India bound soon. At the recently concluded Delhi Auto Expo 2012, VW had showcased the XL1 Concept, which returns an insane 100 kmpl. This terrific mileage is courtesy the diesel hybrid motor, which uses a twin-cylinder motor along with an electric motor. Power might not be the take away points but the low weight surely is, which lets the Volkswagen XL1 to offer decent acceleration.

Now Volkswagen is all said to plonk in the same hybrid powertrain into the Up! hatchback. The 800 cc, twin-cylinder motor produce 48 BHP of power and is assisted with an electric motor producing 27 BHP of power. With a weight of around a ton, the Up! diesel hybrid is expected to hit 100 kmph in 13 seconds and on to a top speed of 150 kmph. This 800 cc TDI unit is the same 1200 cc motor that does duty in the Polo, sans a cylinder. The Volkswagen Up! diesel hybrid is expected to return close to 45 km/l, making it an extremely fuel efficient car. The sad news is that there are no signs of this coming to India anytime soon.
