
The country’s second largest bike manufacturer, Bajaj Auto had launched its 100cc model, the Boxer in a new avatar, the Boxer 150. The Boxer 150 was positioned by Bajaj Auto as a power commuter specifically targeted for the people who don’t care about the looks of a motorcycle but want a well-built motorcycle that return a good fuel efficiency figure. Termed as a “Bharat Bike” by the company the Boxer 150 was mostly directed towards the rural customers with a killer pricing of Rs. 42,051/- (ex-showroom, Delhi) making it the cheapest available 150cc bike in the Indian motorcycling market. Bajaj Auto, the country’s second largest bike maker has launched its commuter bike product, the Boxer 150 in the Egyptian market. The bike is powered by a 150 cc engine. It also sports Bajaj’s ExhausTec technology which makes the bike more environment-friendly and fuel-efficient. The bike has a customized design in accordance with the requirements of the Egyptian market. This has made the bike safer, distinct, and stable on the road, solid and reliable in the toughest conditions of movement and travel. To promote the bike in the Egyptian market, Bajaj also organized an event called the Bajaj Marathon in front of the pyramids in which 15 Boxer 150 bikers will be touring the goveronates of Egypt in a period of 13 days covering a distance of around 2500 kms. Bajaj Auto has quietly launched the Boxer 150 in India. The Boxer BM150 is powered by a 150cc engine (no DTSi or the likes here) and tuned for more torque, rather then outright power. The Boxer is aimed at the rural market and is a tractor on 2-wheels according to Rajiv Bajaj. Priced at Rs. 42,000/- (ex-showroom, Pune), the Boxer’s only USP is its loading carrying capacity. All drum brakes, electric start and an analog speedometer adorn this ‘Bharat’ bike. The Boxer is designed for use and abuse in all kinds of terrain. The Boxer’s 150 cc engine produces 12 PS of power and 12.26 Nm of torque, almost 50% more than the standard 100 cc bikes. Bajaj claims that the Boxer features a rugged frame, swing arm and chassis. Bajaj Auto will bring back the Boxer brand in August by launching the 150cc version of the economy brand. The company is targeting rural areas, which has moved from economy to performance in the recent decade. Post the launch of the Discover 150, Bajaj Auto has received good response for 150cc machines in rural areas. Thus deciding on the re-launch of the Boxer in a more powerful guise. The Boxer 150 will be positioned as ‘Tank On Two Wheels’ and will be priced around the Rs. 40,000/- mark. After conduscting serveral research activities in rural areas, Bajaj Auto has come to the conclusion that rural folks want their bikes with wider tyres (probably to haul weight) and this requires a more powerful engine. Bajaj Boxer is the very first motorcycle which helped the company transform from scooters to motorcycle. The Boxer was discontinued but is all set to return but with a 150cc heart. The Boxer in its hay days used to be powered by a 100cc four stroke Kawasaki motor. Although low on power, the Boxer then returned amazing mileage, which helped it to become such a grand success. But fret not as most likely you won’t be able to buy one, because Bajaj has made the Boxer 150 for Bharat and not for India. Bajaj Auto will relaunch the Boxer in April, 2011 to counter Hero Honda’s CD Dawn. The Bajaj Boxer will be the company’s entry level motorcycle and will help them capture a significant share in the commuter segment. Bajaj Auto had discontinued the Boxer in 2007, after it launched the Platina. The Boxer is expected to feature a 125cc engine and will be priced aggressively against the Splendour.
