Just last week we reported about Hyundai’s plans to launch to the LPG version of the i10 and today the company has announced the same. The Korean automaker has launched the i10 Blue Drive LPG which costs Rs. 27,630/- more than the regular i10 petrol. Hyundai uses the Blue Drive tag on its eco-friendly and fuel efficient cars and thus the Blue Drive moniker has been added to the i10 LPG. The factory fitted LPG kit can take in 34-liters of LPG, while at the same time it can hold 35-liters of petrol. Launched in two variants, the i10 LPG is powered by a the 1.1-liter iRDE2 engine and is priced at Rs. 4,16,144/- for the Era variant Rs 4,30,659/- for the Magna variant (all prices ex-showroom, Delhi).

“The LPG version of our Next Gen i10 is a viable alternative for customers looking at low running cost. With the launch of the i10 Blue Drive, Hyundai is broadening its eco-friendly initiative. Hyundai believes in preserving the environment by making eco-friendly cars that run on low emission fuels,” Mr H W Park, MD and CEO, Hyundai India, said.

Hyundai claims that the LPG i10 has a special Toroidal tank that allows intelligent use of space and makes for larger boot space than conventional LPG-fitted models. The Alternator Management System (AMS), which controls delivery of power to the battery reduces the consumption during acceleration and elongates the battery life of the car. The LPG kit in i10 blue drive is impact resistant and has been tested and certified by ARAI. The LPG system is approved by DOE (Department of Explosives) and is offered with a 2-year warranty.

Fuel prices have been increasing faster then we can blink. This has led to a growing shift in buyer preference towards diesel cars. Now Hyundai has put its diesel plant on hold and the i10 diesel has been postponed indefinitely as well. With buyers preferring to buy diesel cars, the sales of the i10 has been affected. Now the Korean automaker plans to launch an LPG version of the i10, which will help to cater to a larger segment of the market. Fuel prices are close to Rs. 75 per liter and the addition of an LPG variant to the i10 line-up will help sales massively. The Hyundai i10 LPG will cost slightly more than the petrol version but will have a factory fitted unit and will also come with warranty.

The Hyundai i10 is powered by a 1.2-liter, Kappa motor which produces 80 PS of power at 6000 RPM and 11.4 kgm of torque at 4000 RPM. The ARAI certified mileage of the i10 petrol is 20.36 kmpl, and the car reaches from 0-100 kmph in13.4 seconds. Top speed is in the region of 160 kmph and the LPG version will be slightly slower than the petrol version. However the benefits in lower running costs compensates for the loss in performance.

One of the most awaited cars in the recent years, the Hyundai i10 Diesel could soon be a reality as consumers preference has shifted to diesel. The increase in petrol prices have led to customers shelling out that extra bit to get a oil burning machine, which offers better performance and fuel economy. Infact, the shift was so quick, that Honda was left baffled and has announced the development of a diesel engine to power the City. Hyundai too had clearly stated the lack of feasibility of a diesel powered i10. However times have changed and so has Hyundai’s feasibility report.

The upcoming launch of the Chevrolet Beat Diesel could have led to Hyundai doing a re-think (new thinking, new possibilities!) of i10 Diesel. The Korean automaker does have a very potent diesel engine on offer for the i10 in international markets and there is no reason why they shouldn’t launch it in India. The 1.1 liter, CRDi motor produces 75PS of power at 4000 RPM and 153 Nm of torque at 1900-2750 RPM. With the light weight of the i10, the car is expected to return mileage in the range of 20-25 kmpl. This result in the sales of the i10 tripling in no time, while at the same time invoking sleepless nights at Maruti Suzuki and General Motors.

Car tested: 2011 Hyundai i10 1.2L Kappa2 (Asta)

Price OTR Mumbai: 6,04,548/-

The i10 has been a success story for Hyundai right from the day it was launched and has taken over from the Santro as Hyundai’s best selling car. With many new cars cramming into the already jam packed segment, the i10 was getting dated and needed a much wanted makeover and it sure got one. The new Hyundai i10 not only gets a refreshed look but also comes with some extra goodies such as Bluetooth connectivity and audio controls on steering wheel etc. We catch the i and find out.

Exteriors –

★★★★☆

The new i10 gets a new hexagonal front grille, the new theme grill for all upcoming Hyundai cars and a large meshwork airdam beneath, which not only enhances its road presence but also looks sporty. Headlights get an aggressive shape and run almost the entire width of the bonnet with a refreshing raised eyebrow look.

Side indicators are integrated with the outside rear view mirrors and body coloured side moulding is standard on the Kappa2. VTVT and Kappa2 badges are seen on the right and left sides respectively, about the same place where the side indicators were placed on the older model. Alloys wheels conspicuously absent.

The rear houses a new tail lamp assembly and a new rear bumper. Observe carefully and one will notice 4 evenly spaced parking sensors. Yes, new i10 come with a beep only reverse guide system (no digital display). Rear wiper and defogger standard. Similar to the Polo, the Hyundai logo acts as the boot opener.

Interiors –

★★★★½

Step in and the i10 feels spacious for a small car. Interiors are of high quality, fit and finish one of the best in the class. The dashboard has undergone a change of colour from the black/beige combination to a more subtle brown with metal finished centre console. Amongst other things, audio controls on steering wheel and bluetooth phone connectivity adds to the list of gadgetry. Outside rear view mirrors are electrically adjustable and are heated to provide better visibility in rainy conditions. The seats and doors have undergone a change of fabric too.

The instrument cluster shows standard parameters and has a muti info LCD screen on the right side which shows a digital fuel gauge, odometer etc. Instrument lighting has evolved from green to blue.

Steering wheel comes with a leather stitching which looks and feels good. Audio controls and call connect/disconnect buttons on the steering wheel add to the convenience. Chunky chrome door lock and opening lever enhance the overall feel.

Audio system is integrated with the dashboard and there is more scope of tweaking it to get the quality of sound you want. Sound quality is average but a few settings on the system can give you better results.

Aux and USB connectivity is very thoughtful indeed. Though its is the trend of the times, many higher segment cars fail to provide the same.

Enough space for odds and ends. An extra charging point provided for the rear passengers.

Front seats get integrated head rests. Rear legroom is just about adequate.

Boot space is about the average the segment offers.

On the Move –

★★★★☆

Jump into the drivers seat, adjust the seat to your desired height with the height adjuster and crank the ignition, the Kappa2 engine sounds no different than its predecessor though noise levels have been marginally reduced. Slot into first and you will notice that the new i10 is a more fun to drive car. Engine figures may not look too different (mentioned later) but introduction of variable valve timing and shortening of the first and third gear have done wonders to the driveability of the car. The steering is truly ‘Zippy” as King Khan describes it & the i10 negotiates city traffic with utmost ease.

The i10 is also equipped with a gearshift indicator (on the multi information display) which suggests whether one should upshift or downshift as per the requirement to derive the best performance and fuel efficiency.

Ride, Handling and Braking –

★★★★☆

Hyundai has opted for a stiffer front suspension setup and a soft rear suspension. This translates into a relatively more comfortable ride at the rear but overall its a comfortable bet. The i10, by virtue of its ultralight steering is nimble, sure footed and extremely easy to maneuver in city traffic conditions. The i10 turns in easily and the steering gives you enough feedback at high speeds too.

ABS is standard on the Kappa2 and though it does its job, the i10 is severely undertired and the puny 155/80/13 tyres run out steam on heavy braking but surprisingly the i10 does not feel unstable at moderately high speeds. Cornering at these speeds is best avoided considering the nature of the tyres.

Performance –

★★★★½

The new i10 has undergone a major change as far as its powerplant is concerned. The i10 is available in 2 engine options namely the 1.1 iRDE and the 1.2 Kappa. In the new i10, the pistons are coated with a special coating to reduce friction and the intake and exhaust valve diameter has been increased along with the lift for better performance. The Kappa gets the variable valve timing or VTVT as Hyundai calls it. This not only improves fuel efficiency but caters for better driveablity and reduced emissions.

The 1.2 ltr 16 valve DOHC, Kappa2, engine produces 80 PS at slightly less than 6000 RPM and 11.4 kgm @ 4000 RPM and occupies minimal space contributing to the interior space. Though the figures dont indicate much difference from the older engine, get behind the wheel and its a different story altogether. The engine feels peppy in the wider tacho band and the delivers right from 2000 upto 6000 rpm. ARAI figures indicate a class leading mileage of 20.36 kmpl and the i10 comfortably delivers 16 – 17 kmpl (mix of city and highway). Floor the pedal to the metal and it hits 100 in 13.4 seconds and the speedo goes upto 120 comfortably and finally the i10 tops out of breath at 150 km/hr.

Conclusion –

★★★★¼

The i10 has been the segment benchmark for a long time and the new refreshed i10 is only better. Equipped with the first in segment features like variable valve timing and smart gadgetry like bluetooth connectivity, Aux/Usb support etc, the i10 is undoubtedly the best package in the segment. In a price sensitive market like India, the Kappa 2 is slightly more expensive to own and with many options available the i10 sure spells true value for your buck.

Whats Cool

* Refreshed looks
* Bluetooth and Audio controls of steering wheel
* Accessibility of controls
* Best in class mileage
* Peppy engine

Whats Not So Cool

* Wider tyres would be appreciated
What is significant is the car debuts in our country before it hits the stands at the Paris Motor Show at the end of the month. The Kappa engine will now feature variable valve timing assiting in better low end drama as well as lesser fuel consumption. Power is expected to get a boost of 2 PS (not really significant but welcome none the less). Other than the addition of VTT, the i10 will also get a cosmetic touch up as can be seen in the pictures below.

Hyundai has been under some pressure lately. Its latest facelift of the Verna did not go to well with the crowds. Besides, new entrants such as the Ford Figo and the Chevy Beat are continuously eating into the i10′s share. In a scenario, where the Figo is available in diesel and the Beat is going the diesel way too, Hyundai has decided that it will sell the i10 with a diesel powerplant but till then its just sending the i10 for a small cosmetic surgery and the facelifted i10 was spotted near Chennai.

Under wraps and disguised, the facelifted i10 seemed to have new head lamps, new tail lamp clusters, revised bumper, indicators on the rear view mirror and a new front grille. Rumours also go on to say that Hyundai is testing its new diesel engine for the i10. Its high time Hyundai introduced the diesel for its popular hatch but we don’t know for sure yet. The facelifted i10 should hit the market in a few months time.

Just last month we spoke about the i10 diesel not being launched in this generation i10 here, but now reports seems to suggest otherwise. Coming under great threat from the Ford Figo, Hyundai seems to be reconsidering launching a diesel powered i10. Earlier the company was only worried about the Nissan Micra but the launch of the Figo and the new Maruti WagonR has made the company think thrice. A Hyundai spokesperson has hinted on a diesel engine for the i10 being in the pipe line but no date has been mentioned. We can only wait but looking at the way Ford has aggressively priced the Figo diesel, Hyundai will need to work really hard on cost reduction to ensure they can still catch the ‘i‘.
