The Czech car manufacturer, Skoda Auto has made its presence in the Indian automotive market for a long time. However, strangely like most other car manufacturers, it didn’t have any intentions of entering into the hugely popular small car segment market. Instead, it has always kept it focus on catering to the luxury vehicle consumers both in the sedan and the SUV segment. However, the enormous potential of the Indian small car market is sure to lure any auto manufacturer and Skoda is no exception. Just recently we confirmed that Skoda will not be launching the CitiGo in India anytime soon. The company plans to launch the car in India as late as 2014, which is really sad, considering the potential small cars have in our country. But what is causing such a massive delay is a question we need to probe into, right away. The CitiGo is based on the Volkswagen Up! and till the time, Volkswagen don’t launch the Up!, Skoda won’t get a chance to launch the CitiGo. Furthermore, the German automaker will setup an assembly line for the Up! and Citigo, probably at Chakan, which will take some time. With rapidly growing demand among consumers in India for small cars, all the major car manufacturers are eyeing this high volume segment to increase their foothold in the country’s automotive market. Almost all the OEMs present in India have come up with their small car and many like Peugeot are following suit to enter into that. Skoda has released the official promotional video of the CitiGo, which showcases the small car in real day to day situations. The CitiGo is nothing but a re-badged Volkswagen Up!, with Skoda styling. Skoda will be launching the CitiGo in its home town in Czech Republic soon and will follow it with an European launch by the end of the year. Skoda plans to launch the Citigo in India next year. The Citigo is Skoda’s version of the Volkswagen Up! and will help the company get the volumes, it so desires. Skoda considers India a key market for its growth and is heavily betting on China and Russia as well. Skoda will undoubtedly price the Citigo lower than the Up! as Volkswagen has always been the premium brand of the two. The production of the Citigo has already started at Bratislava, Slovakia as Skoda looks at launching the car in Europe next month. However, in all probability, we will have get the Citigo only after Volkswagen unleashes the Up! in India. The Skoda Citigo has a length of 3.56 meters, width of 1.65 meters and a height of 1.48 meters. Power will come through 1.0-litre 3-cylinder petrol engines with the option of 60 BHP and 75 BHP.
