Tata Motors has unveiled the Megapixel 4-seater Megapixel Concept at the ongoing 2012 Geneva Motor Show. The Megapixel is a range extended electric vehicle (REV) and uses a lithium ion phosphate battery along with an on-board petrol engine generator to charge on the move. The Tata Megapixel Concept offers an impressive range of 900 kms on one single full tank, with just 22 g of CO2 being emitted per km. Using only battery only power, the Megapixel will return 100 km/l. But the Megapixel does not use one electric motor, it uses all four of them (one for every wheel!).

The turning radius of the Tata Megapixel is just 2.8 meters, thanks to the front wheels getting turned in an acute angle. The charging too is quite easy with the wheels having to be positioned on the induction pad (no plugging required). The Concept uses a sliding door mechanism for easy entry and exit but this will obviously not make it to production. The Megapixel is not going on sale anytime soon, with the car being developed to catch some eye candy and to show the future design direction of the company. Yes, the next generation Tata Nano will borrow several cues from the study.

The Tata Megapixel was developed in India, UK and Italy and is the progress on the Pixel Concept, which was showcased at the 2012 Auto Expo. The battery layout and hub motors ensures good interior space, ensuring four seat in comfort with plenty of space for luggage in the boot. The Megapixel also features an advanced human machine interface (HMI), with the console helping for docking a smart phone to the car. A touchscreen HMI at the center panel is the single point of operating various features of the car including the air-conditioner and driver modes. Tata Motors has also displayed the Indica Vista, Indigo Manza, Safari Storme and Aria at the ongoing Geneva Motor Show.

Tata Pixel, a car similar to Nano but with the addition of many advanced technological features is going to be showcased by Tata Motors at the upcoming 11th Auto Expo to be held in Delhi from 7th to 11th January, 2012. At just over three meters in lengths, Tata claims the Pixel is “the most package efficient four-seater in the world,” being able to “comfortably accommodate four adults”. The Tata Pixel is powered by a 1.2 litre 3 cylinder turbocharged diesel engine that is mounted at the rear and drives the rear wheels. The car’s body has been optimized for low aerodynamic drag. Coupled with that, the car rides on special low resistance tires and features Stop-Start technology. [click to continue…]

Tata Motors has presented a new city car concept for Europe at the 81st Geneva Motor Show. The Tata Pixel is based on the Tata Nano is just over three metres in length and is the most package efficient four-seater in the world, comfortably accommodating four adults, unlike a typical city car which is either a two seater or can accommodate two adults and two children only. The ‘scissor’ doors rotate upwards from the front to allow all four passengers to effortlessly enter or exit the Tata Pixel, even in the tightest of spaces, while the doors’ large glass area provides excellent visibility. Tata Motors will unveil a 3-door concept car at the upcoming 2011 Geneva Motor Show. The Pixel 4-seat concept will be just 3 meters in length and will be engineered for maximum space. The rear-engined Pixel will be powered by a 3-cylinder diesel engine which will make its way to the Nano soon. The Pixel will however not see the light till atleast 2013, if Tata Motors ever plan to put it in production. We doubt if Tata Motors would launch it in India soon as the company has not been able to sell as many Nanos as they had hoped. However when the Pixel does make it to Indian roads, it will be positioned against the Maruti Suzuki Alto.
